They had one special day called Mountain Day and it was a surprise when it happened. They would wait for it all year and then one morning there would come an announcement and students would chant, “Mountain Day, Mountain Day,” and it’s the big day when they would go hiking up Vitosha mountain. It was also the one day when the boys and the girls would socialize together.

  2. DR. ZORNITSA SEMKOVA: I Expect the Best of My Students – And They Usually Deliver

September 11, 2023 by American College of Sofia

“Тhe beginning of school is always
my favorite time of year. It’s the
    anticipation of something new, a
    new challenge, new opportunities,
new people to meet and like.”

  3. DR. DIMITAR DIMOV ’11: Thinking Big

July 26, 2023 by American College of Sofia

In the winter of 2014 I was chatting with my flatmate in Exeter about his PhD research in theoretical physics
and the first 2-dimensional material discovered, called
graphene, when the idea lightbulb lit. Graphene is the strongest material ever discovered, so I thought: “What if we combine this unique discovery with concrete, make it super strong and hence reduce the volume required in buildings?”

  4. STRASHIMIR “MIRCHO ”GUEV ’35: Education as a Value

July 25, 2023 by American College of Sofia

One cold morning the whole family was dragged out of their home and to the town square and declared “enemies of the state” for the whole town to see. A couple of days later, the Guevs, except for Strashimir’s parents, were loaded onto a horse-drawn carriage and sent away. They didn’t know where they were being taken until they were unloaded in the village of Golyam Izvor near Razgrad.

  5. MARK MCGIVERN: Students See Me as Someone They Can Talk to

July 24, 2023 by American College of Sofia

My goal is to be a positive influence in the lives of young people and pass on what I have learned from the coaches and teachers I’ve had the pleasure of learning from. Something that brings me deep satisfaction is when a young person tries to do something outside their comfort zone and succeeds. It’s what this job is all about.

  6. STEFKA PAPAZOVA: Teaching Is My Favorite Occupation

July 24, 2023 by American College of Sofia

Perhaps we could use some of the unique enthusiasm that had taken over Dr. Whitaker and made him believe that he could, with 6 Bulgarian and 6 international teachers chosen by him and 100 talented girls and boys, re-create this thing called “the College”, ignite a spark, which continues to shine and illuminate, to this day.

  7. MARY CHAKALOVA ’31: Letters from a Spring in Italy

July 20, 2023 by American College of Sofia

We wander all day from a museum to an art gallery and next to some church and then visit a monastery, all day. At noon, we barely have time to have lunch followed by about 15 minutes or so to get ready for the afternoon round.

  8. DR. ROGER WHITAKER – commencement address, mAY 20, 2023

July 20, 2023 by American College of Sofia

    Dynamic interplay between
    planning and surprise, hope and
    doubt, confidence and uncertainty
    characterized those early days.

  9. Angela Rodel: The Human Voice Is the Organ of the Soul

May 26, 2023 by American College of Sofia

I challenge you: as you leave ACS on your life journey, find your soul’s voice and follow it, even if the paths it calls you to may seem strange and winding. Don’t just lip-synch along with a comfortable job, a practical major, a superficial opinion; step out centerstage and sing at the top of your lungs, as nerve-wracking as this may be, as I can testify firsthand! Find the people and the communities your voice resonates best with, even if the harmonies might seem dissonant and jarring at first, as those Bulgarian folk tunes did to me 30 years ago. Find the place where your voice can sound as loud and as powerful as your great-great-grandmother’s reaping song. Because your soul reaps what your voice sows. And the field is wide open before you.

  10. Javor Gardev: Build and protect your human identity!

May 26, 2023 by American College of Sofia

Surf with skillful ease between the two vast civilizations that are having a far from serene encounter on our land, and whose age-old traditions and habits are intertwined in a sometimes treacherous tangle. Work hard to stack the difficult balance between the pragmatic efficiency and entrepreneurial skills of the West with the organizational serenity and recreational work habits of the vibrant Southeast. Navigate wisely and with sober judgment between the latest technological advances and a more modest material culture, between the networks of artificial intelligence and the arrays of functional illiteracy.
