La Prairie Skin Caviar Loose Powder Review - Is It Worth the Price Tag?

The La Prairie Skin Caviar Loose Powder: swipe right? Or, swipe left?

I’ll skip leg day 500 times before I ever skip setting the face with powder - so trust me when I say…

I love powders, and I have made it my life mission to try as many powders as possible. Not that I have especially oily skin per se, but I love a good powder that will blur, smooth, set, and perfect the base. With summer coming up, I have been experimenting with new powder techniques and products to achieve a bulletproof base routine that won't feel or look too heavy.

The La Prairie Skin Caviar Loose Powder is described as the perfect conclusion to an indulgent beauty ritual by Smith and Caughey's, and I couldn't have said it better. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that it's the it-product for everyone. Let me explain.

A good powder will mattify the skin and set the makeup to ensure longevity. A great powder will let the skin breathe, allow for touch-ups with liquid products, and make your skin look baby soft. There is a fine line that should never be crossed between matte and crepey.

Does the $12 Rimmel Stay Matte Powder work? Yes, it does. The La Prairie Loose Powder, however, is $360 for 50g. Does this powder work? Obviously - it does. But, the question today is whether this powder is worth your time and hard-earned money. It really depends on who you are. Dare to find out if that might be you?

My Two Cents

I may be killed for saying this, but I do not like the Laura Mercier Translucent Powder, whatsoever. I also do not like the By Terry Hyaluronic setting Powder- nor do I enjoy the Hourglass setting powders. The common denominator of these powders is that they are way too weightless. These powders are much too silky and extremely thin in texture. I prefer my powder to have a soft, plush, and creamy texture. For example, the Anastasia Banana Loose Setting Powder, Huda Beauty Easy Bake Powder, and the MAC Studio Fix. If you can relate, you may enjoy the La Prairie.

The La Prairie is lavishly soft and carries some weight, making it perfect for those with texture and fine lines. "Finely milled" does not make a powder automatically great for those with texture/ fine lines. This is just false and preposterous. Just try the Makeup Forever Ultra HD Translucent Powder (terrible) if you don't believe me. Because the La Prairie is creamier in texture, the finish that it leaves behind is luxuriously matte with a subtle bounce to the skin that is usually achieved by dewy base routines. The texture gets an A+ from me.

In classic La Prairie fashion, the iconic blue and silver package design is uber luxurious and warrants shelfie status. One thing to note is that it comes with a separate travel size compact which is absolutely amazing to carry around in your handbag for touch-ups. Plus, both sizes come with velour puffs which is truly glorious as powders hardly ever come with puffs these days.

The La Prairie Translucent powder is ever so slightly pink in undertone. While this may sound like a nightmare to some, if you have sallow and dull skin, this may be the product you are searching for. It is incredibly subtle when lightly dusted but becomes a powerful tool for the under eyes when (softly) baking. If you suffer from dark circles with blue, green or purple undertones, the La Prairie powder may assist in that area. It has become my favourite under eye powder since I have been using it. Although I always come back to the Mac Studio Fix for the under eyes, it is my current go-to for the time being.

We can't not talk about the price tag of this powder. As a 22 year old, I don't ever see myself repurchasing this baby, and I don't blame you if you don't even want to try it. However, if $360 is spare change for you, you won't regret the purchase and I’m sure it will become a favourite.

A Word From My Mother

My mother is also a powder freak - maybe I inherited my obsession with powder from her! I asked her to give me a mature lady’s review on the La Prairie powder. Since then, she has incessantly tried to bargain with me for the sole ownership of this powder for the following reasons.

Firstly, she did not have to pay for it. Secondly, she claims that this powder keeps her makeup on all day while playing golf in the summer heat without caking up. Upon further investigation, it seems to me that the La Prairie Loose Setting Powder has a large fan base of bougie Korean golfer women for this precise reason. Lastly, she has carefully asserted to me that this powder makes her skin look younger and brighter. On that note, although this covetable jewel may brag too dear of a price tag to self-indulge, it would make for a fabulous tear-jerking gift for mothers and grandmothers who are absolutely worth it.

Final Thoughts

I think I have made it clear that this is a pretty good powder. Would I go as far as saying that you must run out and purchase it right now? Absolutely not. Am I suggesting that you bark on about it for the next 3 months so that all your close contacts get the hint for your next birthday? Perhaps.
