Passengers will receive face shields at the boarding gate, except for those traveling from Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, where they will be provided at the check-in counter, the airline announced Thursday. The disposable face shields are available in adult and child sizes.

Economy class passengers must wear both the face shield and face masks throughout the flight, except while eating or drinking, according to the airline. Travelers in business class “are asked to wear their face shield and mask onboard at their own discretion, as they enjoy more space and privacy,” the airline wrote. Children under two years old are exempt from wearing both.

“Throughout the COVID-19 crisis, the safety of our passengers has been our highest priority,” Akbar Al Baker, chief executive for Qatar Airways, said in a press release. “By introducing these additional onboard safety and hygiene measures, our customers can rely on us and our unparalleled expertise to fly them safely to their destination.”

Passengers will also receive a complimentary “protective kit,” which includes a single-use surgical face mask, large disposable powder-free gloves, and hand sanitizer. The crew is also wearing new disposable protective gowns over their uniforms in addition to the safety glasses, gloves, and masks that they wear, the airline noted.

Last week, Qatar Airways announced it has resumed flights to 11 destinations worldwide, including Boston. The airline plans to resume almost two-thirds of its pre-COVID-19 network by the end of the month.
