Il y a de ces romans qui te ramassent comme un boxeur poids lourd. C'est l'effet qu'a eu sur moi le roman de Jonas Gardell, qui nous plonge dans les années 1980 en Suède, alors que les médias documentent les ravages du SIDA, qui causera l'hécatombe dans un groupe d'amis très liés.
C'est l'occasion pour la société suédoise d'exprimer sa haine - ouvertement. La science n'arrive pas à faire taire les suppositions ridicules et les préjugés. Pendant ce temps, on meurt. Et comme le dit Rasmus, un des personnages principaux, quand tu es mort on te met dans un sac à ordures pour éviter la contagion, même si on sait que tu n'est plus contagieux. Tu es une ordure aux yeux de la société, deux fois plutôt qu'une.
J'ai lu ce roman avec la rage au cœur, et la tristesse n'était jamais bien loin. Le narrateur raconte avec fougue toutes ces histoires d'amour et de désir, de relations rompues ou conditionnelles avec les familles des personnages, revient sur des souvenirs, et nous enjoint à l'indignation lorsqu'il raconte les ratées de la santé publique suédoise.
Un roman qui fait mal. Un roman où la mort rôde entre les lignes. Et en même temps un roman qui explose d'amour, de désir et de l'urgence de vivre.

When I was trying to find my favourite quote in this book, I realised that I hadn't marked any passages except for a paragraph at the beginning of the book, where the reasons and motivations for the book are discussed. This is a story about things that happened. People who existed. Lives that ended and tears that were shed.
This is a masterfully told story about religion, identity, friendship, love, sex, shame, about so many things. It's so relevant and speaks freely and directly about the lives of the characters using beautiful and poetic language. It might sound odd to describe the style as both direct and poetic, as those two are rarely thought of as connected. But in this text it's the simply stated truth that is the most poetic. The narrative steps carefully, respectfully through the lives of the people it tells of. It speaks beautifully about ugly things. Terrible opinions, awful conduct, painful situations and abused feelings. Ruinous attitudes that made my stomach turn.
This book demonstrates the importance of reading. To experience life from other perspectives, through someone else's eyes and hopefully learn from it. To expand our knowledge and the capacity of our hearts, in order to be more understanding of the world.

The one thing that always strikes me with Gardell's writing is the sadness. The short, snappy paragraphs and the descriptive and imaginary sentences manage to portray a melancholy I seldom find with other writers.
The story of homosexuals in Stockholm is in many ways a story about sadness and loneliness, but also a story about discovery and inclusion. Sections of the book cover the vibrant nightlife of the city, just as sections break in showing the sterile life in a hospital bed. Aids is creeping up upon the city and although the characters are not yet aware, Gardell makes sure we know what will happen.
I think this is a phenomenal read that should reach more people. It is an important read that will give insight and understanding.

Je n'oublierai jamais Rasmus et Benjamin. J'écrirai plus tard quand les larmes ne me brouilleront plus la vue. Ne les essuyez pas, elles doivent couler.

A book that tells the story of how it was like being gay in the 80s, with aids and mistreatment. Of judgment and miss information, this is a book that definitely will pull on your heart strings. Don't know why it took me so long to read it but I'm glad I finally did. I enjoyed reading about the characters and even though this isn't an happy story and will make you sad for the characters I did really like them. I will definitely continue on with the series but I'm aware it won't get more cheerful as it goes a long. But don't think that time was very cheerful for most gay people during those times. Find it to be an important book to read.

Il y a 35 ans, apparaissait une nouvelle maladie qui, au départ, attaquait seulement les homosexuels, le VIH. En nous racontant les destins de Reine, Bengt, Lars-Ake, Seppo, Paul, Rasmus et Benjamin, l'auteur, Jonas Gardell, revient sur cette époque charnière où la communauté homosexuelle qui voulait faire la fête et aimer après avoir été ostracisé pendant des siècles se retrouve à devoir se cacher de nouveau.
L'année est encore jeune, mais ce livre a de grandes chances d'être ma lecture préférée de 2017. Il y avait longtemps qu'un roman n'était pas venu me chercher autant.

Quel grand livre! D’une profonde humanité. Un morceau d’histoire racontée ingénieusement, avec une sensibilité incroyable. Sourires et sanglots ont ponctué ma lecture, à plusieurs moments durant cette lecture. Une épopée, un voyage, voilà ce qu’est N’essuie jamais des larmes sans gants.

Jag tog mig igenom de första hundra sidorna väldigt långsamt och var tvungen att ta en paus då jag visste att detta skulle bli en tung upplevelse, vilket det sannerligen visade sig vara när jag idag bestämde mig för att läsa ut boken.
En sjukt informativ och tragisk skildring av aids-epidemin och dess effekter i Sverige som var smärtsam att ta sig igenom - speciellt då Gardell beskrev epidemin genom denna grova berättelse om utanförskap, vänskap och kärlek. Boken var både personlig och brutal i sin beskrivning av sjukdomen, men även i hur det var att vara homosexuell i Sverige under sent 1900-tal.
Då jag själv, pinsamt nog, var rätt omedveten om de politiska rörelserna under den här tiden och hur det var att vara homosexuell under denna period i just Sverige, fann jag denna bok mycket lärorik och framförallt viktig med sin bittra sanning.
En gripande, viktig bok med viktigt innehåll som man verkligen borde känna till.

Otrolig bok! Förväntade mig inte att den skulle vara så poetisk. Kändes som om orden klingade, väldigt vackra bilder som återkom. Vill bara krama om alla karaktärer. Tung men fantastisk läsning!

De jeunes gens, accablés par les pressions familiales, sociales, religieuses et politiques, isolés, prisonniers d’une orientation qu’ils n’ont pas choisie, mais qui les habite, qui les définie. Stockholm, circa années ‘80. Quelques années après la décriminalisation de l’homosexualité, un groupe d’amis est tyrannisé par le SIDA, qui les attaque, un après l’autre.
AMOUR. MALADIE. MORT.
C’est ainsi que se divise le merveilleux récit suédois N’ESSUIE JAMAIS DE LARMES SANS GANTS. C’est également ainsi que se morcèle la vie des personnages principaux.
Rasmus et Benjamin grandissent loin un de l’autre, dans des contextes familiaux différents, mais couverts d’amour parental et étouffés par la même vérité qui les habite, qui les enchaîne.
Jeunes adultes, les deux garçons s’installent à Stockholm pour VIVRE, pour EXISTER. Ils y découvrent la sexualité, l’amour, puis sont attaqués par le nouveau fléau, le cancer gay, le châtiment divin.
Il y a aussi Paul, Reine, Bengt, Seppo, Lars-Åke. Il y a aussi les parents de Rasmus et de Benjamin. Tous ces personnages sont d’abord des personnes. Pas de caricature. L’auteur accorde à chacun d’eux l’espace nécessaire pour que le lecteur les connaisse, les comprenne et s’y attache.
L’approche littéraire est magique. L’auteur amène le lecteur au cœur des histoires, des intrigues. Il présente les personnages principaux et ceux qui naviguent autour, il raconte le quotidien intérieur et extérieur des jeunes hommes et, rapidement, il soude le lecteur à leurs destins. Puis, on passe en mode documentaire. Les chapitres «roman» sont morcelés par des chapitres ou des passages «essai», où l’auteur contextualise l’intrigue. Il décrit la Suède de l’époque, la situe dans la mondialité de l’époque. Il informe sur les avancées médicales. Bref, il permet au lecteur de saisir la dynamique qui façonne le déroulement du récit. Paradoxalement, cette approche sociologique et parfois didactique contribue à humaniser les personnages.
Le lecteur va et vient dans le temps, passant d’une époque à une autre, d’une vignette à une autre. Tout ça sans confusion. Aussi, tout au long des 824 pages, des phrases et des passages sont repris. Deux fois. Trois fois. À chaque lecture et relecture, on ajoute un sens à l’interprétation, à la compréhension. Une lourdeur s’ajoute. Une nuance en allège le poids. C’est selon.
J’ai été bouleversé par ce roman. L’écriture (et la traduction pas trop franchouillarde) est de haut niveau. Je devais occasionnellement prendre des pauses, déposer le livre pour bien absorber ce que je venais de lire, tellement c’était touchant et/ou puissant et/ou triste.

Ouff!
Cette grosse brique c'est un peu comme l'historique complet de l'éclosion du VIH et de la libération de l'homosexualité en Suède dans les années 1970-1980. Nous suivons en alternance plusieurs personnages et leur histoire par rapport à leur homosexualité et à leur réalité avec le SIDA. L'aspect plus difficile pour moi en lien avec la narration multiple, c'est que je n'arrive pas à apprécié tous les personnages autant, malgré que l'auteur est fait un effort notable pour les rendre tous attachants.
L'histoire n'est pas chronologique, elle alterne entre le présent-le passé et le futur de tous les personnages. Malgré qu'on arrive à suivre très facilement, ce n'est pas un procédé que j'aime, utilisé aussi fréquemment.
J'ai été surprise de constater que le roman a un caractère très informatif par rapport au VIH et à l'homosexualité. C'est fascinant, mais ce n'était définitivement pas à cela que je m'attendais.
Si au départ j'ai vécu des émotions très fortes, je dois avouer que le caractère informatif a pris le dessus sur l'aspect roman et j'ai ressenti une grande douleur tout au long de la lecture, mais j'ai été incapable de m'investir plus. D'ailleurs, il y a de ces citations assassines dans ce livre. C'est cru et tellement honnête.
L'autre élément qui m'a destabilisé c'est la répétition de scènes. Je comprends l'impact que cela a lorsqu'on revit les scènes avec de nouveaux éléments en main, mais j'ai trouvé cela trop fréquent et ça me dérangeait à la fin.
J'ai probablement un avis un peu mitigé, mais j'ai vraiment bien apprécié malgré tout. Les personnages sont attachants, l'histoire est poignante et le sujet nécessaire.

siis apua. tää oli ihan super hyvä!! varmaan jotain neljän ja viiden tähden välillä, lähempänä viittä kummiski. pakko varmaa lukee seuraava osa heti perää...
vaikka tää tarina käsittelee vakavia ja surullisia aiheita, tää oli jotenki silti tosi helppolukunen ja kevyesti luin tän kahelta istumalta. aluks oli ehkä vähän vaikea tunnistaa missä ajassa ja kenen kannalta tarinaa nyt kerrotaan, mutta siihen pääs kyllä nopeasti mukaan.
tykkäsin siitä kuinka informatiivinen tää kirja oli. tosi mielenkiintonen ihan vaan kaiken tän historian ja tiedon takia mitä tässä kirjassa oli. tykkäsin siitä, että välillä oli muutaman sivun "info/historia" kappaleita!
heti tän kirjan ekalta sivulta asti on tarinassa mukana synkkä tunnelma ja kuolema ja sairaus läsnä. sairaus ja sen aiheuttama kärsimys pysyy mukana koko kirjan muistuttumassa siitä, mihin kaikki tulee päätymään. tykkäsin ite siitä, että tälläsiä pieniä vilauksia tulevista tapahtumista oli aina välissä ja myös pätkiä menneisyydestä. tää kirja piti kyllä tosi hyvin otteessaan ja innolla (kauhulla) odotan kahta seuraavaa osaa, tää jotenki loppu ihan liian nopeesti.

Combo review of vol. 1-3
More than a story of romance in the face of tragedy, these books are a portrait of a society and a time. Its scope and the number of characters, each drawn vivid from the smallest of details, each just as alive as the main cast, allow the story to take on epic proportions. The constant jumps back and forth in time, while occasionally disorienting or frustrating, are incredibly effective in conveying a sense of inevitability. “This story happened. It happened here, in this city, among the people who live their lives here. In a city where most people kept on living their lives as if nothing happened, young men started getting sick, faded away and died.” The writer, a comedian, is one of the ones who survived, and through all the laugh-out-loud funny moments, there is woven a sorrow so deep it could only ever come from one who lived it.
One of the most fascinating aspects of how this story is told, is the juxtaposition of the hyperreal historical chronicling of facts and dates, with fable-like elements of tremendous symbolic power. On the one hand we have exact quotations from the articles published about the “fag-plague,” and clinical descriptions of the treatment of AIDS patients in conditions akin to biblical leper-colonies. On the other, we have motifs like the white elk – “who would like to kill such a beautiful creature?” “lots of people who don’t think it belongs here.” – or the ritualistic dance of male/male courtship in spaces that at night seem so dreamlike that they might as well be Narnia. The image that comes to mind is of a window between worlds: on one side the “normal” world, cold and indifferent and aggressive in its realism; on the other side, the inside, warm, whimsical and unrestrained in its portrayal of lives lived, memories made, not giving a damn for outside-imposed rationality.
This is of course the best possible way to describe these characters. They’re all so brilliantly alive, so colorful and unique. The stream-of-consciousness whirlwind of memories, words held back and involuntary thoughts, reach the level of psychological depth found in some of my favorite books of all time. And while the struggle with being oneself as told through the eyes of Benjamin (a Jehovah’s Witness) and Rasmus (a country bumpkin from Fuckall Nowhere) is gripping and strikes a nerve with me personally, some of the most interesting and powerful moments come from the perspective of their parents, the ones who represent the outside, but are forced to look inside. They say and do so many wrong things, arguably doing more damage than good, and yet it’s all out of love. Misguided, toxic love, but love all the same. Something about stories surrounding the AIDS-crisis hit me so hard. I suppose in part because I feel very strongly that I, and everyone like me in my generation, owe so much to the men who came before us, the ones who were shunned, beaten, hated and killed, so that we can live our lives. Also because I know, that had fate willed things otherwise, I could so easily have been one of them. The book itself summarizes its main cast, and thus all the men all around the world who lived through this story, better than I ever could: ”They were the ones who lived the most, the ones who loved the most, the ones who winter took.” It can be easy to just focus on that last bit; the world has done such a good job of making their lives and their stories all about suffering and death. But I think what this book does best is showcase the first parts. They were so much more than the numbers published in newspapers to horrify. They lived and they loved, on their own terms, and they did so beautifully.
More than a story of romance in the face of tragedy, these books are a portrait of a society and a time. Its scope and the number of characters, each drawn vivid from the smallest of details, each just as alive as the main cast, allow the story to take on epic proportions. The constant jumps back and forth in time, while occasionally disorienting or frustrating, are incredibly effective in conveying a sense of inevitability. “This story happened. It happened here, in this city, among the people who live their lives here. In a city where most people kept on living their lives as if nothing happened, young men started getting sick, faded away and died.” The writer, a comedian, is one of the ones who survived, and through all the laugh-out-loud funny moments, there is woven a sorrow so deep it could only ever come from one who lived it.
One of the most fascinating aspects of how this story is told, is the juxtaposition of the hyperreal historical chronicling of facts and dates, with fable-like elements of tremendous symbolic power. On the one hand we have exact quotations from the articles published about the “fag-plague,” and clinical descriptions of the treatment of AIDS patients in conditions akin to biblical leper-colonies. On the other, we have motifs like the white elk – “who would like to kill such a beautiful creature?” “lots of people who don’t think it belongs here.” – or the ritualistic dance of male/male courtship in spaces that at night seem so dreamlike that they might as well be Narnia. The image that comes to mind is of a window between worlds: on one side the “normal” world, cold and indifferent and aggressive in its realism; on the other side, the inside, warm, whimsical and unrestrained in its portrayal of lives lived, memories made, not giving a damn for outside-imposed rationality.
This is of course the best possible way to describe these characters. They’re all so brilliantly alive, so colorful and unique. The stream-of-consciousness whirlwind of memories, words held back and involuntary thoughts, reach the level of psychological depth found in some of my favorite books of all time. And while the struggle with being oneself as told through the eyes of Benjamin (a Jehovah’s Witness) and Rasmus (a country bumpkin from Fuckall Nowhere) is gripping and strikes a nerve with me personally, some of the most interesting and powerful moments come from the perspective of their parents, the ones who represent the outside, but are forced to look inside. They say and do so many wrong things, arguably doing more damage than good, and yet it’s all out of love. Misguided, toxic love, but love all the same. En stark start på bokserien. Jag tror att den här var rätt mycket uppbygnad för vad som kommer.
Ibland var det mycket upprepning av vissa saker men jag tyckte verkligen att det funkade för det mesta. Det gjorde det bara tydligt hur viktiga vissa aspekter var för/hos en del av karaktärerna. Ex. Hur svårt är det inte att gå mot något du levt i tro om hela ditt liv?
Jag tyckte också oväntat mycket om Gardells "fakta avsnitt" som kom med jämna mellanrum. Det gav en bättre inblick i hur tiderna var när boken utspelar sig, för oss som inte levde där och då. Det jag däremot hade lite svårt för var språket ibland. Ex ordet "skall" i samband som ex "skall detta ske...". Det kanske är tidsenligt eller så är det Gardells sätt att skriva. Det låter fint men för mig är det lite styltigt då jag aldrig själv använder det ordet. Det handlar alltså mer om mitt läsflyt än om texten i sig.
Det fanns två saker jag störde mig lite på (återigen, kanske skulle de bara vara enligt tidsenliga uppfattningar, jag vet inte!). Ena var att Afrika vid ett tillfälle framställs som ett vilt och farligt ställe och det andra var om porrbutiker där det står om bland annat videos (?) av "sex med barn". Vilket för mig är direkt gräsligt, det är pedofili och våldtäkt. Sex med barn existerar inte. Dock är det inget av dessa två saker som har direkt med berättelsen att göra utan är mer som parenterser som jag reagerade på. De handlar mer om hur Stockholm såg ut på den tiden.
Man får i alla fall känslor för Rasmus och Benjamin redan nu. Rasmus som bara följer med och inte riktigt verkar stark i sig själv även om han låtsas och Benjamin som måste brottas med allt vad han är. Jag tycker också om Paul. Även om tiden de lever i och livet de lever kan verka kaotisk (i mina 2020-tals ögon) så är Paul någon som verkar vara en trygg punkt för andra. Han har en slags säkerhet även om han nog också är full av sorger och ensamhet ibland.

J'ai traversé ce livre et me suis attaché aux personnages comme c'est rarement le cas. Malgré sa taille et ses 824 pages, l'ensemble se lit presque seul même pour ces gens qui manquent de concentration comme moi.

Kärleken är mer än bara en bok. Jonas Gardell har inte bara skrivit något så fasansfullt vackert och hjärtskärande och viktig, han har fångat sanning på papper. Det är rått, det är sorgligt, det är roligt, men framförallt är det ärligt. Torka aldrig tårar utan handskar är allt det där, men den är även en helvetes bra bok.
Det är 1980-talet. Rasmus kommer från en liten håla i Värmland till Stockholm, med längtan i bröstet efter att äntligen få vara den han är, en homosexuell ung man. Benjamin är sina föräldrars guldgosse, och lever för Jehovas. Men även han gömmer sig, och vet inte vem han ska välja; kärleken till sig själv, eller kärleken till Jehovas. Och mitt i allt kommer sjukdomen först krypandes, sedan så jävla snabbt att ingen har en chans att skydda sig.
Gardell skriver verkligen väldigt vackert. Jag läser sällan böcker på svenska, både för att jag föredrar att, om möjligt, läsa böcker på sina originalspråk, men också för att jag tycker att många svenska författare skriver väldigt pretentiöst. Det är inget sådant med Gardell - han ger blanka fan i att imponera, och har inte bara kul med språket, utan struntar i alla regler. Han skriver även rakt från hjärtat, och med en sån sorg att det ofta slår rakt i magen och knockar en. Boken är en blandning av fiktion och ren fakta strött mellan raderna. Vi får lära oss hur homosexuella i koncentrationsläger under Andra Världskriget var längst ner i hierarkin, och kunde stjäla stjärnor från judar för att försöka bli bättre behandlade. Hur länge homosexualitet klassades som en sjukdom i Sverige, och framförallt hur aids avfärdades eftersom det främst var homosexuella som drabbades. Det hela resulterar i en kall, tragisk och oförglömlig läsupplevelse som väcker både känslor och tankar.
Jag kommer utan att tvekan att läsa resten av serien, men behöver lite tid att förbereda mig. Sedan blir det att se om tv-serien. Och sen att trycka denna bok i famnen på alla jag känner.

815 pages c’est beaucoup😅. Il s’agit d’une très grande œuvre qui met en lumière une réalité terriblement désastreuse. Quelle horreur ils ont vécu. 🤯 Ça prenait cette histoire, ces histoires, pour comprendre cette crise humaine et ses conséquences tant sur le plan politique, sociétal qu’individuel.
C’est bien écrit, la plume de l’auteur est rempli de sensibilité. Un grand leg pour nos mémoires. Très hâte d’aller voir la pièce dans quelques jours.

Jag gillar mycket att man får lära sig mera om Sverige hur de var under 80-talet och hur aids började allt mer sprida sig. Jag tycker personligen att Sverige skolor ska lära sig hur folk i världen såg på såna allvarliga sjukdomar och på vilka människor som blev så nedtryckta av sjukdomarnas rykten.
Jag gillar Benjamin och Rasmus. Det märks tydlig under deras första möte att de slogs gnistor för dem. Jag gillar verkligen Rasmus nya vänner som han träffar via Paul.

Déchirant et poignant. Incursion dans la réalité des homosexuels suédois (et occidentaux plus largement) dans les années 80, en pleine naissance du sida. La complexité des personnages (qui sont bien plus qu’une sexualité), la force de leurs amitiés renforcées par le rejet de leurs proches, les différentes formes de militantisme.
Super riche en histoire, et en émotion. Vraiment bouleversant. Il faut le lire lentement pour l’absorber graduellement.

Un monument de mémoire au VIH/SIDA, les injustices, la mort, la discrimination. Tant de thèmes exploités, j’ai adoré les tendances documentaristes qui me faisait pousser un « ben voyons donc » de temps en temps. Quelques longueurs mais j’ai compris que l’édition que j’avais était une collection de trois tomes, les répétitions qui devenait un peu lassante vers la fin doivent être plus digestes si lu sur trois tomes. Bref un réel monument à cette période sombre.

I loved the TV series so I had high expectations for the book. I'm so happy that it is as good if not even slightly better than the TV series. I appreciate the historical tidbits that Gardell has dropped here and there throughout the book. The story is already based on real events and Gardell's real-life friends and acquaintances so adding those tidbits that document gay rights issues etc and general atmosphere towards LGBT people in Sweden at the time gives a nice touch to it all. You didn't get that from the series.
The book starts quite slowly but after Rasmus moves to Stockholm everything starts falling into place. If you've seen the series, you know what happens in the book. They go pretty much hand-in-hand. Some of the dialogues in the series are taken straight from the book: no words changed. That didn't bother me, though.
It's a well-written book. In fact, I found the language to be quite beautiful. The characters are crafted with care and even though you haven't really gotten to see behind their surface yet, Gardell does a great job making us feel for them. Strong mood. You can sense the darkness and the terror looming around the corner. I'm already anticipating it getting stronger. I suspect this might become really powerful reading experience once I get to read the parts 2 & 3.
Even though nothing has yet happened to the main characters my heart is already breaking for them. Just like my heart breaks everytime I think about the real people who went through hell during the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and 1990s. I can never say I know how it felt or I know how they felt but they are my brothers and sisters. I'm related to them. I feel for them. They are my people. If I had been born 20 years earlier, I could have been one of them.
