Once I saw the cover, read the blurb I couldn't wait to get my hands on it, once it arrived on my kindle. Game over!! This was inhaled like my next breath depended on it I didn't want to put it down!!
Two years later Carly is still in the throes of despair after losing her fiance in a tragic accident, so the last thing she ever expected was a phone call asking her to help with Scottie's care, he's her deceased fiancé’s autistic brother after his father passed away recently. Uprooting herself and moving to New Hampshire she's hoping she can place him in a group home as soon as possible.
Then out of the blue another curve ball is thrown her way, because the very day she arives she opens up the door to Josh, he's her deceased fiance's best friend.
Bring on all the feels as they struggle to coexist whilst taking care of a nonverbal autistic adult and his many ipads which keep him occupied and settled.
This had all the moments, those up in the feels moments, emotional moments, manic giggling moments, hot moments and all the moments where I rooted for these two. Without even knowing it themselves they were perfect for each other.

Opinion Breakdown
The Good: The premise. Scottie. The notes/inside jokes.
The Not-So-Good: The ending could've been better. The first sexy scene felt odd and kind of disconnected.
The Bad: The lack of angst.
Overall: This was an enjoyable read. I'm kind of disappointed that it wasn't as angsty as I'd hoped. I wouldn't say they "hated" each other or that the tension was what I had expected with those feelings. I thought they disliked each other for silly miscommunication reasons. I think it would've been better if there was more tension in that respect and more angst. I know this is an unpopular opinion -- but maybe some flashbacks to when they had encounters in the past? Other than that, Scottie and their interactions with him stole the show for me! I have a son on the spectrum, but he is high functioning so it's not the same (not that anyone on the spectrum is the same), but it was heartwarming to see him connect to these two in his own way.
Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Carly and Josh's story. They both jump in to help when they find out that the adult brother with autism, Scottie, of their deceased fiancé and best-friend is needing care after his dad died. Only they weren't expecting each other to be there. They had not necessarily liked each other in the past when the fiancé and best-friend was alive 2 years prior, so there is a lot of miscommunication that needs to be sorted out. There is some Scottie drama, some sexy times, and some baggage they have to work through...and they get a HFN ending.
Point Of View (POV): This alternated between Carly (mostly) and Josh's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed and I thought it flowed well.
Instalove: No, more like (not hate but) dislike-to-more
H (Hero) rating: 4 stars. Josh. I really loved his relationship and ease with Scottie. I just got tired of the hot and cold.
h (heroine) rating: 3.5 stars. Carly. I liked her. I appreciated how she stepped up with Scottie and how she was caring, but I don't feel like we got very deep into her character.
Sadness level: Low/moderate. I shed a few tears but nothing that needed any tissues.
Push/Pull: Yes
Heat level: Good. They have some good tension, chemistry, and scenes -- but not so much it takes away from the story. If I'm completely honest, the first scene with them doing anything I was convinced was going to be a vivid dream because it felt out of nowhere! Kind of odd actually.

I’m still thinking about I Could Never, by Penelope Ward, days after hitting the last page. Don’t read my review; just one-click this book. Ok, if you decided to read my review, I will say that you should be prepared to binge-read this book. I know you will devour this heartfelt and angsty enemies-to-lovers romance. I Could Never heated up my Kindle screen and melted my heart. Penelope Ward once again cemented my love of her words and romance books. I Could Never is one of my top reads of 2023.

Carly drives across the country to take care of Brad’s adult special needs brother. It’s been 2 years since Brad passed, but Carly wants to step up and help find a group home for Scottie. What she doesn’t expect is Brad’s best friend showing up to help. Carly is definitely not a fan of Josh, to say the least.
This story is more than just enemies to lovers. It’s about learning to forgive and move on. Trying to deal with guilt with the growing feelings they have for each other. Yet, there are a lot of sweet moments, not only between Carly and Josh, but Scottie too.
This book was more than I expected with a twist that I did not see coming.
I highly recommend the audiobook with Sebastian York and Andi Arndt as narrators.
This story is more than just enemies to lovers. It’s about learning to forgive and move on. Trying to deal with guilt with the growing feelings they have for each other. Yet, there are a lot of sweet moments, not only between Carly and Josh, but Scottie too.

My first solo Penelope Ward book and it wasn't what I expected.
First of all I felt that the story wasn't a light, sexy read, or enemies-to-lovers. It tried to deal with some heavy stuff but it did so superficially. So, I would say that it is somewhere between a romance and a chick-lit contemporary story.
Carly and Josh, bad opinions for each other aside, stepped up to provide assistance in a difficult situation and I can't help but admire them both for that. Not everyone would put their perosonal life on hold and be there for someone for whom they had no legal or familial obligation to. What I appreciated the most in their relationship was the honesty in their transactions and the mature way they delt with their cohabitation.
It became clear, almost from the start, that the "bad blood" between them was just a misunderstanding and from then on they formed a united front to deal with Scottie and his needs.
Though there are plenty of lol moments, I missed the angst and the bander that I was expecting to get from these two. Also, I felt that their attraction and chemistry was forced and came out of the blue.
Nonetheless, it was an enjoyable read and I knew from previous books both the narrators and I like how they perform in this kind of stories, and I believe that if I had no expectations I might have rated the book higher.

Oh My Heart! Carly Garber never thought life would throw so many curveballs her way, so when she is the only one left to take care of her deceased fiancé’s autistic brother Scottie until he can get into a special needs home she goes to New Hampshire. Carly also didn’t expect her former fiancé’s best friend, Josh Mathers, to also be there helping out. These two could not be more opposite and do not get along but can they work together for the sake of Scottie? Will they find a way to move on with life and just maybe find a new happiness…together? The hate-to-love, the banter, the caregiving and love. It was all brought together in a beautiful package in I Could Never. Carly and Josh’s story really shows their love in how they care for Scottie and learn to live and love each other

Honestly the cover was the one that drew me into wanting to read this book without reading the synopsis. (Doesn't he give you a Henry Cavil vibe?) Anywho, I've had my share of hit or misses with Penelope Ward but I will say that this was an enjoyable read. At the beginning it did take me a bit to get into it but as I kept reading that story got more interesting.

DNF @ 60% NOTHING. Is. Happening. Zero chemistry. The back and forth internal monologues these two have about “should they or shouldn’t they” is exhausting and irritating. The only moment that evoked some human emotion is when Scottie presses his cheek to the TV screen when he hears his dead father’s voice on the home movie playing (😭) That isn’t enough for me to see it through until the end. 1.5* beyond boring*stars!!!!

⭐️ DNF @ 16% When I read “I hadn’t been good at relationships and had cheated on my fair share of girlfriends back in high school. Might have even stolen a girl from a friend or two back in the day.” (MMC), I had no further interest in finishing this book. No thank you.

I love Penelope and she is my favorite Romance author. Her style is unique and she knows how to blend her personal experience with fiction so that a little piece of her remains in the story all the time. I read about her kids and personal life, so I think this book goes home more than it should.
But, for me the story was a little static, it didn't have the dynamic that I craved and seen in her old books, back when I fell in love with her. This Penelope that we are seeing right now is not very much concentrated on developing a complex plot, but more focused on the feeling and on the message. I am not saying that this is not a fair approach, but it's not something suitable for me, because I want action and more things to happen when I am reading.
Carly and Josh were a nice couple, who had to face a very delicate situation - taking care of an adult with special needs, Scottie. Scottie is Brad's brother, Carly's fiancee who passed away in a car accident. Josh was his best friend. They both had the idea of coming to New Hampshire and staying with Scottie until they could find a group home for him.
Carly and Josh didn't have a good relationship when Brad was alive and that banter kept on going until they both discovered their real personalities. Not to mention the physical attraction that was blooming. They had to face a huge amount of guilt, because of their connection to Brad and because in their eyes and of their families, a possible love is impossible.
The message was interesting and the way it described the needs and behavior of a special needs adult with autism. It was very sad to read, but also very eye-opening, because there are so many cases like this in the world and you even didn't know about it. Seeing 2 adults join forces to help and cope was very heartwarming for me.
But that was just about it, the social message... Besides that, Josh and Carly had a very slow burn, which I think was overshadowed by Scottie's condition and problems. They were not in the spotlight and I think a lot of questions about them remain unanswered. This is how I see the story... I wanted more from it more plot development and more dynamic.

This follows Carly who lost her fiancé in a car accident a few years ago. Then after Brad died his father has now passed and Brad's brother has special needs. So Carly decides she will move in to help out because that’s what Brad would have done. But my worst nightmare and enemy has just rocked up to the house and he thinks I can’t handle it.
This was such a beautiful story of two people both dealing with grief in their own way and pulling heartstrings. The way these two cared for Scottie who has special needs was beautiful. I feel this was more character development with some plot but I still really enjoyed it. The left notes between each other were special. They respected Brad even though he was no longer around. Was a great audiobook and the narrators played these characters well. So glad I picked this up!

I wanted to like this more than I did. I liked the characters, and I thought their chemistry was fine. Unfortunately there were things about the plot that I just couldn't get over.
First, Carly's fiance Brad has been dead for two years, but somehow she's still in touch with someone to know that the Brad's father passed away, leaving Brad's nonverbal autistic brother Scottie with Brad's aunt. That seems unlikely. And she decides to put her make-up job on hold to drive from California to New Hampshire to take care of the brother for months or years until he can get into a home? That's insane.
Second, the experience of taking care of Scottie seemed romanticized, and played for laughs most of the time. As a guy, I can guarantee that Scottie grabbing Josh's balls and dick would not be funny. It would be painful, and possibly damaging. Besides that, any time Scottie does something destructive, they just laugh it off, as if they're having the time of their lives. I didn't find any of it funny, and it seemed too slapstick-y for me.
Third, they both go on dates, both while they're there and when they move home, and it's talked about like it's a requirement to go on dates. They're in New Hampshire temporarily, so why would they feel the need to go on dates and get laid while they're going through this situation that should be very difficult? I understand that it's fiction, and in the world of romance novels people can't usually go a week or two without going on a date or getting laid, but it felt unrealistic and off.
Fourth, I didn't buy the excuse that they couldn't be together because of Brad. It would be fine if they were with other people, but not each other? I thought it was weak and repetitive, and I got sick of it by the end.

There is such beauty in Penelope Ward's writing. Her plots are always fresh, new, and different than anything you've read before. Always deep, heartfelt, and with that touch of angst your heart longs for.
Carly, our heroine, who lost her fiancé two years ago, braves the task of stepping in and taking care of his 23 year old autistic brother, Scottie.
Soon, she realizes she wasn't the only one with the same idea of stepping in for Scottie's well-being. Welcome, Josh Mathers, ladies and gentlemen. P.S. he's the best friend of her late fiancé :O.
Let's just say that the tension is very palpable. There were steamy and heartwarming moments. The attraction alone was its very own breathing entity that they couldn't fight at all!
I Could Never is hate turned into love with real emotions that will undoubtedly cause you to shed a tear or two.

“I could never” captivates with many heart-warming details and moments, an utterly heartbreaking framework and very likeable characters. Ward explores themes of love and hate, guilt and yearning, and delves into the found-family trope as the main characters, Carly and Josh, start taking care of Scottie, the orphaned non-verbal autistic brother of Carly's late fiancé and Josh's best friend Brad. Carly and Josh, both grappling with the loss of a loved one, try to find a way to navigate their forbidden relationship through a minefield of guilt, shame, loyalty, and undeniable attraction.
What I loved the most about this book was definitely the found-family trope. From Scottie's obsession with Josh's smell and love for explicit pictures to Carly and Josh's compassion for Scottie, you can't help but be enchanted by this trio. I also loved Josh's brothers and would have loved them to be a bigger part of the story (Neil needs his own book, find this man a wife asap!).
In addition, I really loved both of the MCs. Josh was sweet, funny, sometimes a royal PIA, yet the ultimate personification of a care bear!😅 I loved that Carly wasn't whining or drowning in self-pity. She may have been overwhelmed occasionally, but she was never helpless or a pushover. Where Josh was playing push-and-pull, Carly, despite having a bad conscience, was pretty straightforward and demanding. I enjoyed her character arc very much.
The most outstanding, but also infuriating, feature of the book is the powerful interaction between the main characters. Although they start out hating one another, it's clear from the beginning that they're destined to be together. What begins as feisty banter, sparked by attraction but also disdain, morphs into an emotional, intense journey as both of them fight their attraction out of a sense of obligation to Brad.
Unfortunately, Ward painstakingly doles out the tension of her story through these interactions and by doing that, she is somewhat overstressing the leitmotifs of loyalty and forbidden romance. The ratio between chemistry, attraction, angst and guilt felt massively unbalanced. There's been more push than pull in their relationship, degrading their attraction more to lust than love for the majority of the book. In my opinion, this imbalance failed to do justice to both the complexity of their feelings and their characters.
Overall, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book. However, I could not relate to all the decisions taken. The story quickly developed into an emotional roller coaster that demanded a lot of patience from the reader. The characters are rather well-written, and the plot is mostly well-crafted. I'd say this book deserves 3.5-3.75 stars, mainly for the outstanding characters and the banter.

This was a lot more fast-paced than i usually like for characters that hate each other to fall for one another but i honestly didn’t mind that. Carly just lost her fiancée and Josh lost his best friend, Brad, and they both feel the need to step up and take care of Brad’s autistic younger brother, Scottie. They also really hate each other and will not step down from being in Woodsboro to take care of Scottie, so they need to learn to live together until Scottie gets into a care facility.
I went into this with zero expectations given i was in a slump, it was supposed to be a quick pick me up but my god i was obsessed. The tension was thick enough to cut with a knife, and they’re both such vulnerable, broken-hearted characters. I loved this one so much, a definite unexpected gem🤌🏼

I loved this highly emotional, full of banter and heart story from Penelope Ward. Two people who consider each other forbidden fighting a strong attraction to each other is totally my catnip. Josh and Carly came together heartbroken over the loss of Carly's fiance and Josh's best friend who had passed away to care for her fiance's adult brother with autism, and falling in love with each other helped heal them. Ward wrote a beautiful story of people forming a deep bond while caring for someone they mutually love.
*I can't give an informed opinion on how the representation of autism was handled. There were a lot of lighthearted, silly moments, and I did appreciate that, but I can't comment on the likelihood of these scenarios or whether the carer of an autistic person or an autistic person themself would find any of them offensive. I felt Scottie, the man Carly and Josh were living with, was loved, cherished, and taken care of.
