This is the best cheapie I've ever bought and my heart is aching it's discontinued. I'm happy to have 2 bottles! It's the most gorgeous gothic decadent dark leathery vanilla ever. Yes, it does smell like burnt rubber at some point but I love it. It's what makes it unique. If you get the chance, do try it! You will be pleasantly surprised! 💕

MrMrBrian

This one has been with me all along! And when I break the seal on my back up bottle & I’ll purchase another back up even tho it's been rising in price for awhile! Yup, To me this is way better than Bvlgari Black or JV Dark Rebel Rider, Both of which I own But don’t reach for neither of em because of this Gem!! It’s called Black Sugar maybe I gravitate to it beacuse it’s just sweeter! I’m no parfumer by any means. But it just seems either better blended or better choice of ingredients in this one. The notes just stand out more to me & The black suede leather accord just compliments the hell outta this sweet rubbery car tire type of scent!! Nothing short of awesome here..As an owner of almost 300 mostly niche fragrances I’m not all bothered to have what was once originally a $39 fragrance in the cabinet with all the others!! I seen above stating is was similar to MFK Oud Parfum….Oh No!!!!! That one is super awesome! But nothing similar in any kind of way whatsoever!! Still this one, If can be found at a reasonable price is def worth picking up before it’s gone.

THIS SCENT IS AMAZING & EVERYTHING! I’m
going to pair this with Killian’s Smoking Hot Perfume! I’m sure it’s fire 🔥 compared together! 🔥🔥🔥🔥😮💨❤️

I bought a bottle years ago before I dove deep into fragrances, wore maybe once or twice. I found it again in my collection and sprayed it. I definitely appreciate it more now, very deep and cozy. Knowing it’s discontinued and many people love this scent, I’ve decided to put it to the side and see if anyone wants the bottle I have. DM me if anyone’s interested! I have the batch code, estimated full level and all!

kayyk123

I love this! I really really do! I need 2 more bottles of this GS AND SS! this could be unisex honestly! But If you don’t like leathery/smokey scents I wouldn’t recommend.

Black Sugar is a get together of the notes I usually try to avoid: incense, oud and leather. but strangely I really like this one. there's a dark, dry, smokey woody note very dominant in it but it's nothing like the usual oud note in other perfumes which I hate. this is all I smell here: the mentioned dark, dry, smokey woody note+leather which feels like burnt rubber sometimes+vanilla and Pink Sugar's burnt sugar/cotton candy DNA which I love. you might think such a mixture might smell awful but it doesn't. it smells interesting and addictive!
Black Sugar is like a more grownup, darker, unisex version of Pink Sugar. I hope they bring it back because it's very unique. what makes this special is the blend of Pink Sugar's DNA with the more masculine notes so no other perfume can smell really similar. this isn't something I wear occasionally but I sometimes crave it specially in really cold weather and I'm so glad that I have it in my collection. they really need to bring this one and Chocolovers back.
BTW I could pink up more raspberry, burnt suger thing six years ago when I first bought it but now I can pickup less sweetness. maybe my chemistry has changed or maybe it's because my Black Sugar is aged.anyways I still like it a lot.it also has impressive longevity and sillage. twelve hours after spraying a puff on my wrist, I can smell a dark, smokey vanilla which is to die for.

Black sugar: very nice for a couple hours—pleasant vanilla and oud but the price is criminal. I paid $15 for 2 ml which is nuts since it doesn’t last long. so I probably won’t get more of this scent. If you love it though it was recently available at decantshop.com.

Their most popular fragrance ever and they choose to discontinue it.. Logic

conniption

When I first heard the name of this fragrance I expected it to smell completely different, and when I bought it I actually didn't love it... but after trying it again it started to grow on me and now it's one of my favorites. It opens with this delicious cakey vanilla, and leather, which I guess is what people are saying smells like burnt rubber. After wearing for about 20 minutes it really starts to mellow out and it's this delicious vanilla smoky scent. It's perfect for a winter night and I wish Aquolina would stop discontinuing these 😩

Stasi

I absolutely love this fragrance, but I have a tendency of wearing it to funerals (even during the day in the summers, just a spray or 2) since it's so cozy. I've now associated it with mourning so I rarely wear it, but it's quite a gem. I can understand why some say it smells like tires, but I just get very sweet leather and incense.

jreyes366

I've had my bottle of Black Sugar for about 4 years, and it has only gotten better over time.

The vanilla in this is thick, cake like. The raspberry is so sweet and works perfectly with the incense, oud, myrrh, and leather.

I do not get the burnt rubber note, I smell incense and leather which might be what people smell and think it's burnt rubber.

This has the DNA of the OG Pink sugar but no liquorice and no citrus.

I do recommend this to anyone who loves deep vanilla scents with leather. It is gorgeous and gets better with age!

catmeow

I wrote my review few years ago, I never thought this tin solder scent would become such a [black] unicorn, but don't despair: I recently got "Black Papyrus" by H&M and there really is no difference between them, maybe someone with a better nose can detect it, but I can't. Eventually Black Sugar is a hint sweeter on application, but that sweetness is gone within a few seconds, so are most of the dark smokey notes that define Black Sugar as a unicorn, what stays is a tiny bit of Vanilla and Licorice close to the skin (and you can get that with Pink Sugar). While Black Papyrus is stronger and holds up the dark soldering smokiness for much longer. So there you have a dupe to try, before you spend coin on ebay.

I’m wearing Aquolina Black Sugar (from my wardrobe) tonight. It smells exactly like burnt marshmallows and black licorice being run over by a car’s rubber tires that are peeling out over hot asphalt. I quite enjoy this one and so does my BF. I am only on the fence about it because it is so sugary. I do prefer the opening to the drydown because it is more burnt smelling, and granular, if that makes sense. It mellows out some in the drydown.

The closest comparison in the reminds-me-of’s above is MFK Oud; but the only thing they have in common is the type of oud, perhaps, and a touch of sweetness to the MFK, but there is no burnt quality in MFK Oud at all, no granular sugar, much less sweetness, and there is a bright almost slightly citrus-y quality in it. They are only similar in the drydown, but the similarity is remote. MFK Oud is a fairly linear nice quality smoothly blended oud/patchouli scent, and Black Sugar is more rough.

I understand the Bvlgari Black comparison, I suppose, due to the shared rubber tire note and the vanilla, but it lacks the oud, the burnt quality, and the granular sugar, and it is far, far smoother than Black Sugar. If the Bvlgari is different, VCA Midnight in Paris is even further removed and has very little in common with this scent, as that is yet smoother than Bvlgari Black. Mancera Aoud Vanille Is also far smoother than Black Sugar, with more vanilla, and has that Montale/Mancera cola/peppery synthetic dna with a more masculine quality. The only real things it has in common are that the Mancera has some oud and vanilla. But the oud is different and the scent is very different overall.

Nataliemarie

I get burnt rubber & licorice. I don't know who thinks this smells like OUD from MFK, but I have that, & it is AMAZING, this does not smell anything like that! This is just an ok scent for me. I want to love it b/c I love licorice scents. I do not love it. It's ok.

PlanetGrl

Finding nearly all my favorite notes in one fragrance seemed discordant at the very least but they all come together so beautifully here. It’s dark, animalistic and yet deeply sexy somehow. It is no shrinking violet, no fragrance that fades into something you forget about. It is unforgettable and makes the one wearing it memorable as well. It’s sticky black licorice and resinous myrrh...so bold it’s a total bad@$$ that dries down to a smoky woodiness I can’t get enough of. My partner is crazy about it.

smellsbells

initially may seem harsh to some but after a few minutes is very dense vanilla and smokeiness. long lasting for sure but not girly really.

Joani_Cheddar

Squeeeel~burn rubber on me! So this is what The Gap Band was singing about~ Pink Sugar magnified with oud/leather combo. An addicting scent but not for those who want to smell pretty for those who are rebellious. A dark vanilla scent. Sort of reminds me of hair-spray hair that has been burned by a curling iron. Am I weird for liking this scent a lot? probably.

cocofluff

+ How is it possible that I've never reviewed this? I have a bottle and a backup bottle so definitely fbw for me. This little cheapie is that good and it gets even better with time as the vanilla deepens with age. Lasts all day too.

Initially when I bought it about a year ago, it opened with a burning tire incense note but over time the fragrance has mellowed considerably.

Now it opens with a softened sugary vanilla leather note. Sugary fruit comes through but just a little. The base of woods just adds a little depth to the myrrh that is present throughout the wear. This fragrance smells so cozy and comfortable to me! One of the best cheapies I've ever bought. 😘

divakitty24

~ Here I go again , I purchased this on eBay in January 2018 it came in the tube which I use to protect my makeup brushes with rhinestones on my vanity . I loved the notes of this and I must admit I bypass daily , I just never think to reach for it . I'll have to give it a try , but just by taking off the top I got nothing but vanilla and a hint of something smoky , like burnt vanilla syrup that is sugary sweet . I'm not sure I can wear this , as we don't get along . I don't like a strong vanilla , as it overpowers all other notes and that is all I get , no matter the cost unless other notes are more predominant , depressing really . I get all the time a name of a perfume with vanilla as a main note and I have to pass , I try to find a perfume with just a hint of vanilla and even then sometimes it just does not work on my chemistry , I run super hot and some women can wear a perfume like this in summer , not me , all turn cloying and some even give me a headache . I get my heart broke so many times over a perfume which I think is why I became a pursuer of scentuals to begin with { love them all } . Those that smell amazing on others don't always wear or smell that way on me ~ I might just have to let this one go ~ I'll edit once I test on skin . I already have on my scent for the day ~ ///=^ } ~

raffandthecats

It's an adult version of Gold Sugar. It leaves behind the gourmand notes to focus on the woody and dark side. The vanilla is always there but in a more masculine way. It's not a teen perfume, it's perfect for fall and winter, warm and intense.

Maja2812

Why they discontinued this was stupid. I regret not buying this a few years ago when they were $17 bucks on eBay :( Cheap dupe oil here I come...

bel.gravia

Black Sugar was a blind buy for me. The initial spray is extremely off putting, a scent of leather and oud only - very dry, kind of bitter, strong, pungent even. But give it half an hour and it transforms into an oriental vanilla. The burning tyres smell goes away, vanilla steps in, and Black Sugar becomes a niche like weirdo. It is not beautiful in common sense of the word, however, there is beauty in how the smokiness fades and then comes back and lingers around vanilla. In order to love this perfume you have to be an oud lover, for sure.

kumquat2

I've done a review already, but wanted to add that if you find the need to soften this scent it goes great with Habanita. I'm wearing Habanita right now on wrists and top of hands, with Black Sugar on top of forearms. Black Sugar amps up Habanita's soft leather note, and Habanita softens and sweetens the Black Sugar. I'm liking these together a lot.

Mrsmooreavl

No no no no no! I love scents with all these notes, Arabian scents, oud and incense. But this isn't cozy, it's not a high-end leather trench coat, no elegance, sophisticated or any nice adjectives. This is a leather whip, smells sharp, loud, this is elbows on the dinner table, I eat like a cave man, Tarzan before he met Jane leather. Dollar store incense and fragrance oils, burnt plastic, synthetic in every way. If you like this and can pull it off, I envy you. My only regret is trashing the bottle as I see it's selling for 10x what I paid!

kumquat2

I love this!! It opens with Pink Sugar, then a whiff of liquorice, then full-on leather. For hours and hours, leather. I have so many perfumes that promise they'll smell like leather, but don't. Or do, but not for long. This one, though, this one is strong, beautiful leather. I get no doll head, no tires, no smoke or fire at all. Maybe some wood, but primarily leather. And I love it. I keep buying 10 ml decants, because much as I love it I just can't bring myself to pay $120 for it. And that's as cheap as I can find it on Ebay. Oh, I'll break down and but it most likely. I just need it. Darn it. It's beautiful.

miss_piggy

I found this really nice layered with Incredible Things by Taylor Swift, which softened the harsh edges. I think it would also go well with Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose..

BKBelle

This was a blind buy for me, based on the notes. This smells like a leather couch. Way too leathery and I don't get any of the other notes. This is great to spray on furniture, which is what I use it for now.

LisaLovesPerfume

Black Sugar is the most mature of the Pink Sugar flankers. The leather and oud notes are very prominent. This fragrance also has a bit of a charred wood note, which mingles wonderfully with the vanilla. Unlike the other previous flankers, this scent is not overly sweet despite the misnomer in regards to the name. My overall impression is woods and slightly sweet vanilla. Black Sugar would be a very good choice for Fall and Winter.

catmeow

To make it short: this is some raspberry blast for about 30 seconds, then it becomes sweetened tin solder. Not even exaggerating.

I wore this and my bf told me it reminds him of solder, but thinks it's acceptable since I'm a software developer and should be allowed to smell like a smoldering computer circuit board. After that I couldn't think of anything else. He was right, that's exactly what it smells like.

Do I still wear this? You bet!
It's my oddity perfume for special occasions.

So test before you buy this, unless you love solder (or oddities). :D

Affe24

I blind bought this perfume some years back based on the Fragrantica reviews..first try was a total no no.....
I did felt the burnt rubber note...and I do not know what else...overall impression was that it was a strange perfume...not for everyday use..
Than I got use to it..after the first 15 minjtes the burnt rubbee note becomes a caramelized raspberry smell... this lasts about 3 hours..afterwards the scent becomes similar to burnt sugar..which I like ☺ .
Sillage and longevity are monsters, so be careful not to overspray it.
Suitable for autumn and spring , I associate it with leather jackets 🙂.
If you want to make an impression,go for it.

drklttllght

I'd like to nominate lemon as the actual fruit in this. When first sprayed I get a zesty lemon meringue pie with rubber. Then it turns into a regular lemon meringue with leather. The final stage is just the meringue and leather with a slightly burnt caramel. The dry down on this is the best part.

At first, I kind of liked this perfume but after trying it again now it's a love.

gmar117

To me this smells like Pink Sugar mixed with One Man Show Oud Edition. Though there is an additional harsh sour note not present in either of the two I mentioned. Overall I like it. It starts out with the raspberry and vanilla in the foreground, then the oud and leather come out, but the raspberry and vanilla never entirely disappear and can be found on the boarders of the sillage; which is about 4ft.

Elsee

This really is an awesome experience! You MUST work with this one. Try it on your skin, your clothes, check it out every 21 minutes or so.... it's just one of those fascinating scents that takes patience and imagination. It's not for the faint of heart, that's for sure. It's deep, exquisite and daring!

With all of that said, just try it. Let it breathe and go through the necessary stages. In the end, you will love it.

Happy sniffing!!

MadisonAlexandraH

At first I was turned off by the scent, I didn’t necessarily get rubber, but the leather was very strong and raw. After about 30 minutes, I thought that I was definitely going to be selling it. Then, after about 2 hours the vanilla came through and the scent softened. I enjoyed it more and figured I may like it if I let it grow on me.

The next time I wore this fragrance I sprayed it a little further away from my skin and enjoyed it much more. However, it was still too strong of a leather scent for me. I layered it with one spray of Aquolina Pink Sugar for some added sweetness and one spray of Aquolina Simply Pink (which I do not love on its own) for some added fruitiness and now it’s wonderful! I will be mixing Black Sugar and Simply Pink together from now on as they are both not my favourite alone but are lovely together.

EDIT: Nope. Nope I can’t do it. I thought I could enjoy it because the dry down is decent and resembles a darker pink sugar after 2 hours of wear but I am so turned off and suffocated by the strong, bitter leather scent in the first hours that it’s just not worth it. I got sick to my stomach when I wore it again. Way too strong for me. If you are the type of person that has always enjoyed sniffing permanent markers, the smell of leather, or gasoline then you will love this (the fragrance does not actually smell like gasoline, but it has a comparable harshness). I have always been revolved by all those smells so it’s a no go for me. It may be nice on someone else but not my skin chemistry unfortunately.

SailorV

I was thinking so long about blind-buying Black Sugar, I even dreamt about it once, but when I finally had my bottle and sprayed for the first time I was disappointed and thought it smelled like burning rubber tires and cough syrup.
Maybe because it was really cold when my bottle was shipped and it had to rest for a while, or maybe because I had to get used to it, I think differently now.

Yes, it's smokey and maybe even a bit rubbery, but not like burning plastic anymore. I don't think it smells distinctly like oud, but it's very woody and somewhat leathery. And yes, there are these syrupy raspberry and vanilla notes that evoke a memory of the original Pink Sugar, but while that one really smells like cough syrup to me, in Black Sugar the sweetness mellows out into the darker notes quickly. Together, the sweet and the bitter notes give me an impression of a very exotic fruity scented incense.
This is a really strong scent, very long lasting and more suitable for cold days and evenings in my opinion.
I see that it becomes harder to find and has gone up in price a little, so if you want to try it, do it now!

evapap181977

outstanding bittersweet scent!classy and expensive smell for ridiculous price!!im so impressed with this little gem projection and longevity as an edp.thgank you Fragrantica and many thanks to the reviewers who made me try it!

After much debate and research whether I should purchase this fragrance, I went for it. Don't regret it at all!

This is the sweet, smoky, resiny gourmand I wanted. I prefer this to Pink Sugar, which isn't as complex or dark. The Pink Sugar DNA is present, as the 'core' of this fragrance, but it is shrouded in a smoky, resin, leather cloud. The initial spray has the very bright citrusy PS blast with a lot of fresh leather, but it dries down to a much softer, older, leather after a few minutes (plus all that good smokiness). I don't get a 'burnt rubber' out of the leather, but I can see how if someone had slightly different skin chemistry it could swing to rubber rather than leather. I'm a big fan of incense, myrrh, so I was happy for this Aquolina Sugar twist. The one note I don't get is the raspberry, I mainly just smell a citrusy note (bergamot?), and I don't get any fruitiness. Which I actually prefer, me and 'red berry' notes often don't get along.

Longevity is good--easily all day. Similar to the longevity of Pink Sugar. The sillage is a bit lower than Pink Sugar, so you won't blast everyone in a 20ft radius, but it still is a very decent moderate to high sillage.

Black Sugar had been a Want of mine for quite some time - and a fabulous Fragrantican gifted me <3 this beauty.
I have never worn a Oud before, that I know of... so being a Oud newbie, hard for me at this time to describe that note, except to say deep, exotic, even rustic ?
On first spritz, very smokey of incense, and the rubbery hot note - so striking, combined with the right off deep and different to me Oud.
Smoke and fire fierceness lasted on, an hour or so,the sillage high.
A natural leather and vanilla took their places - the vanilla straight from my pure vanilla extract bottle, brown, sweet, smooth, tempting. A scent you can taste.
Black Sugar started to to smooth out, but there is no mistaking the incense and Oud smoldering.
I like the raspberry note - I have come to love raspberries and strawberry notes in a dark fragrance.
A bite of juicy sweetness weaving through a dark veil.
12 hours later, the presence lingers, much softer, not too sweet, and alluring.
It`s fascinating to me how Black Sugar evolves, how intense it really can be. I would not have guessed it.
I will continue to wear, explore, and take notice of other`s reactions .

locknotes06

An addition to my previous review after wearing this for quite some time.It unfolds wonderfully on my skin and unfolded floral accords that doesn't seem to be in the note pyramid composition. It's something that pops up on cold summer nights! It's so strangely addictive and a fascinating development and discovery how that popped. It's not a tuberose type of floral.....I don't know what it is but I'm loving it!

outside_the_box

Initial impression: Like a cross between Pink Sugar and Rive Gauche Intense. It must be the Myrrh.

locknotes06

My third Aquolina fragrance and I'm not disappointed.

First experience was Gold sugar.A whipped cream, lemon vanilla cake fluff in a bottle. It's like lying down on the softest sponge cake ever with a white mildly sweet frosting.

Second,was the queen.Pink sugar.A cotton candy,caramel and vanilla bomb.

And now,this.The smoky,the sweet,the mysterious Black sugar.

Black sugar reminds me so much of Halawa/Halva/Tahini fudge. If you're not familiar with it,it's an arabian dessert. It smells like when eating that. The oud gives it that woodiness on paper but on my skin, smells almost nutty! It's like white chocolate.Rittersports White chocolate with the hazelnuts. Its so delicious!

Yes,it does have the Pink Sugar DNA but on the dry down on my skin,it's not Pink Sugar at all! It's berry,woody-hazelnutty and vanilla!

I'm lucky enough to have the skin chemistry that doesn't make it smell like pink sugar on the dry down after a couple of hours of wear.

To me,it's a different scent on the dry down from it's mother.

Spray it on clothes, then it'll be a different story. If you do spray it on clothes, expect the dry down to smell like pink sugar hours after.I've tested it and it does smell like PS.So I do recommend testing it on your skin and see how it develops.

Fair warning that you do get the burning tire smell on the initial blast and during the couple of minutes it resting on your skin. You have to have the proper skin for oud or leather to blend in well within your chemistry.I smelt oud on some people back then and it smells like sneeze.I smelt leather and if it blends within your skin,it'll smell so damn sexy.I acquired a bottle of Carner Barcelona Cuirs and it smells like piss on my skin.

But this one.The leather, the oud,the vanilla with a hint of raspberry all plays along well together like a well written symphony that had a bad start.

Having this is the only time I got to smell that "burning smell" that they say they get from Pink sugar.Smells like its gonna be a fucked up caramel but then..Tada!It ain't.

Black Sugar is a bad-ass all dark clothing but with a cute demeanor type of person.

I'm really surprised how most of Aquolina's fragrances work well with my skin chemistry.I'll try the Steel Sugar or the Simply Pink next time!

Edit:This is such a long lasting scent!I've already toned my skin with micellar water and I can still smell fuming a nice soft sweet cloud around me.I've sprayed this 7 AM before I went to school, have walked 2km back home, toned my face and neck(Too lazy to wash my face the moment I got home) and now it'a 9 PM and it still lingers.

I've grew fond of Black Sugar. It's just so wonderful.I know it's risky to wear such heavy fragrance under the heavy heat and certain times when it's humid.I just love it.It unfolds beautifully on my skin.

rowenaaine

I don't know why, but all I smell is burnt sugar. Not sweet burnt sugar like caramel or creme brulee. "Burned in the bottom of the now-ruined frying pan" burnt sugar. A very faint DNA of the original Pink Sugar in the background. But nothing else. No floral, no oud, no cedar, no incense, no fruit. I can't get past it. I tried it several times, during different types of weather, on my skin, on my clothes. It's not only a scrubber on me, it literally makes me gag. I wanted to like it. I'm annoyed I can't get any of the yummy fragrance that you guys are getting! Oh, well. Can't love 'em all.

Nikolett

I would call this fragrance burnt sugar :D haha :D
I blind bought it, because I wanted a warm, cozy and woodsy- smokey scent. But instead of the smokiness all I get is a burning rubber smell. After a while it gets more sweet and the burning rubber dna is not that strong, but I still can get it.
It doesnt last long on me. It stays really close to the skin.
Its not my favourite but I dont hate it.

sandifitzg

Oooh I love this. To me this is heavy on the cedar, softened with vanilla, sweetened with a bit of pink sugar and made very rich and intoxicating with incense. It projects very well and is very long lasting. The sweet vanilla sugar is an echo of the original pink sugar which I also love. Exotic....wear this with your jangly silver bracelets or go chic with it. It is a fall winter fragrance. There is something irresistable with the touch of sweet pink sugar combined with the exotic woods and incense. This is a strong fragrance...2 sprays are enough...less is more

I haven’t written a review for so long but now I have to being amazed by this sky high quality/price ratio.
What kind of magic is this? I bought the 100ml bottle for like $15, and now I’m thinking of buying another just in case it gets totally discontinued. It’s a very wearable oud and incense scent with a touch of leather and warm vanilla sugar. It’s definitely more sophisticated and adult-like than the rest from the same line (they all smell like dessert-ish teenager scents). I’d say adding oud is a risky move for such a brand, because I find oud being easily offensive to “common” people’s noses. However, this one is amazingly friendly because of its super sweet vanilla undertone, which makes the oud and leather more lively and approachable. It’s a pretty linear scent with a vanilla dominant dry down, and I quite like it that way. I feel like some brands nowadays purposely make their scents unnecessarily complex, but what do I know lol.
Overall I really like this one, I just wish it was a little less sweet :P but well, that’s what makes it different from all the other mainstream oud scents so I really shouldn’t complain. Plus, the price is unbeatable and the packaging is quite chic and lovely.

Like the review below mine, I too just received this as well as the shower gel...after being curious about it for quite awhile. I spritzed it on...and let the initial "alccohol-ish waft pass...and BINGO!!....I really really am liking this scent!! I get woodsy...a "dry" non-fruity raspberry...semi-sweet vanilla ect... The tire/tar/rubberish note some others have mentioned is barely there...It does not smell like a cheapo scent...it smells niche IMO. Good quality. A pleasant surprise for the little money spent. Basically, just take the advice from the mostly favorable reviews here. I agree with what I have read here. Good stuff !!!

LoreleiBluebird

Finally took the plunge and blind bought this after it being on my want list for about a year as I realised to my horror that it has become insanely rare on the usual internet sites. I guess it must be discontinued, I can see the prices skyrocketing due to scarcity so I got lucky for £17 on eBay.

ANYWAY...
The original PS is too sweet for me though it's very well done, so I was intrigued by the idea of the oud and smoke additions.
It's delicious, it has that burnt rubber quality similar to Bvlgari Black combined with lovely cotton candy and vanilla. The raspberry is that of sweets rather than fruit.
As other reviewers have indicated, the beauty of this is in the drydown, wonderful sweet, smoky and woody depths.

It's a scent for Bonfire Night or the fair, it's terrific fun and I'm very happy to finally own it.

EDIT:

Decided to try amping up the oud/incense by layering with a cheap Arabian oil, Al Aneeq Oud Sahara (not in database), and it is even more amazing.

Nikol2

I promised myself that I will try all perfumes from this brand since I fell in love with original Pink Sugar. After a while, when drydown starts riadiating, on my skin is mix of original PS with added leather. It is sweet and more mature as PS, so it can be worn by older ladies too ;)

Christycaxxx

I blind bought this because I love the smell of oud. Black Sugar is more of a sweet leather fragrance with a hint of oud. A more grown up scent compared to Pink Sugar and I prefer this one. I understand what reviewers here mention burnt tire scent but it could be the leather and vanilla notes that could evoke that smell. I prefer wearing this at night as I smell the oud more than day time. Packaging looks sophisticated with the black background and gold vine pattern combo - love it!

Soofiya

@enevictor
It has a dark, slightly spicy sweetness but I don't find it similar to spicebomb
Spicebomb is a lot spicier and a bit more masculine, this one is more vanilla with a touch of smokey leather
Black Sugar can be a great choice for whoever looking for a unisex vanilla perfume

enevictor

For those who have it :

Does this have anything to do with Spicebomb? I mean does it have that dark spicy sweetness?

Thank you anticipated!

Sailor Pluto

I finally ordered this one as a blind buy! My first thought when I smelled it was that it has everything in common with Calvin Klein’s Obsession with the exception of cK’s spicy notes, which are replaced with a touch of berries. To me Black Sugar is all about incense and amber (Amber is not in the notes, but is listed in the description). It is not a safe blind buy if you hate Obsession, it really does have the same dry incense’s and amber’s persistent presence.. I am an Obsession hater, but I was lucky to like Black Sugar. I guess what I can’t stand about Obsession are the spicy notes after all!

adrienn99

I kind of like this...I would not touch anything with 'sugar' in its name, not even with a barging pole, but was surprised I liked it first, then when I checked the notes, it all made sense: it is the leather and vanilla combined that appealed (it's a lovely combo in my book). So Black Sugar is nice but somehow cannot get over the fact that something appears to be missing. Black Sugar feels rather one dimensional and quiet. It is like smelling the drydown of a perfume after 8 hr into it.
It is rather cheap tho, so I can imagine how layering it with something else may produce better results.

saintlunaire

In France we use to buy expensive parfums of couture brands or haute parfumerie brands…. it s our culture or snobbishnesh probably. Now i am surprised by cheapies easy to find with the web. Black Sugar is a great surprise : niche quality, eau de parfum quality for coins.
Smoky, "soft depth", sweety class not sugary at all, aoud, linear.
I place it between Habit Rouge Guerlain EDP and Ungaro III Oud, in term of fragrance an quality.

Vixmix

After obsessively reading all of these reviews i finally did it. I blind bought black sugar and it just arrived at my door step 30 minutes ago! I sprayed my hand and at first totally got the burnt tire note that some of suggested. At first i thought i made a blind buy mistake and was beating myself up for all of my recent blind buys (it’s all you Fragrantica peoples fault haha)! However i told myself not to smell it for twenty minutes and it has REALLY grown on me. My husband is SUPER into muscle cars and drag racing and i realize the burnt rubber smell reminds me of that which is a great memory for me. He has a 1970 Chevelle he used to race at a local drag strip and when we were dating he made me feel like his car model and all those fresh love feels. I know get more of the leather and burnt marshmallow smell and my four year old daughter said it was yummy and she doesn’t lie. I’ll be curious to see what my husband thinks of it (I’ll wear it regardless of what he thinks - he doesn’t care that much about my fragrance picks haha). Overall it’s a very interesting blind buy. Not for everyone but i can see where it has a “niche” edge to it - or maybe I’m crazy? Either way, i keep sniffing my hand and can’t seem to stop. Something about the smell is strangely addictive and pleasant. I also think this would layer well with other fragrances so now I’m off to get some layering ideas!

Albertos

Mysterious, beautiful, warm, this is black sugar. I love this fragrance! Unisex! Very durable! I love to wear it this spring at 24 C. It smells rich!

greyhoundmom

My favorite of the Sugar series. Black Sugar has a dusty, nostalgic feel to it during the drydown I presume from the incense note... the opening is Pink Sugar's burnt cotton candy with an intriguing rubber tire and leather vibe to it that is very addictive. There is a smoothness from the vanilla that melts this into a lovely golden sort of aura. Gorgeous fragrance all in all, and very strong. One test spray on my wrist has drowned out the other fragrance I was wearing.. very high performing for an EDT, just like Pink Sugar is.

Edit: wearing this again and it hits me....this reminds me of Shalimar!! A very sweet version. But the vanilla, the dusty incense and smoke.. totally Shalimar. There just isn't any citrus/bergamot top notes.

KaelanLovesPerfume

To me, when I first sprayed this my immediate thought was "burnt rubber and cotton candy". However, after looking at the notes, I realize that the "burnt rubber" scent that I smell is leather. I'm surprised to not see cotton candy listed as a note because that's a lot of what I get in this fragrance. It's odd, unique and quite frankly amazing. I'm really really enjoying the smell of this. I can't say that I've smelled anything like this before. You get that straight up leather scent combined with a super sweet cotton candy note. You wouldn't think that the two would work together, but they really do. Will update with sillage and lasting power when I've worn it more, but I'm really enjoying the smell of this right now.

**UPDATE**
I've worn this for the past week, and while I still enjoy it, I've learned to go light on it. I can't stress that enough. I made the mistake of dousing myself in this the first time I wore it out and that was miserable. I got a headache and a little nauseous. It's very strong, especially if you over do it. So I've been doing a spray on each side of my neck and one on the back of each wrist, so four sprays all together. This way I've been able to enjoy the pleasant smell without getting sick.. that really nice rubber/cotton candy smell. The woodiness comes out more when you wear it, especially under the sun. It was hot and sunny here today and the wood was amplified and it really blended well with the sweetness. The sillage actually isn't great. I get about 3 & a half - 4 hours out of this. It's extremely strong at first which leads you to believe that it's going to be a sillage beast, but unfortunately it's not. I paid $15 bucks for this, so I'm overall extremely happy with my blind-buy. It smells great and unique, strong, and get around 4 hours tops out of it. Of course the sillage could be much better, but at $15 bucks, no complaints here. Not sure how often I'll be wearing this, because with everything said, it's not an appropriate "everyday" scent. Not for me at least, but I will definitely be enjoying this on occasion.

Bubbles1964

Fun, cheapie scent. Smokey, sweet incense with oud taking a back seat. Doesn't last much past 2 hours on me before turning to a skin scent. Still a fun addition, and because it's so cheap you can reapply often. Glad I blind bought it, solid like from me.

Amaranthe

This starts out smelling leathery and sweet, then fades into a wonderful woody vanilla. The top notes (leathery and sometimes burnt rubbery) aren't my favorite but I love the dry down! It also lasts and lasts (I could still smell it 12+ hours later!!!). Can't believe this outlasts any expensive EDPs I have ever tried! Crazy long lasting EDT! How is this possible?! Generally I think the sillage is moderate unless you just sprayed it, then it is pretty heavy. I would avoid other people for a few minutes after you spray it since it's pretty strong (they may not appreciate that "burnt" type smell...Haha).
I saw other people mention on here that it reminds them of Halloween or fall or marshmallows roasted over a campfire. It makes me long for Autumn and Halloween every time I sniff this perfume! My favorite time of the year <3
It's amazing value for the price! Definitely give this one a try :)

perfumeaddiction

I reviewed this some time ago and got it out of my perfume arsenal to try it again. Ladies and Gent's for the price you are not going to find better. If you enjoy sweet with a twist of something unique this one is the bomb. I sprayed it in my bedroom 4 hours ago and it's still going extremely strong - on skin the same thing. I get tired spending money on faders but this was created extremely well with insane lasting ability. I find it a beautiful non gender fragrance that while sweet not sickly sweet in a youthful kind of way. Fantastic for Valentines day I will wear it with my sweetie!

Soofiya

After my other successful aquolina blindbuys(pink sugar, gold sugar, blue sugar)I went for this one and ordered it from a foreign website and after two months of waiting, finally received it three days ago.
it looked like a very risky blindbuy.I hate, hate, and HATE oud.leather is a risky note for me.I love it when paired with something sweet and something powdery,in other cases I dislike it.I usually dislike incense too
When I first sprayed it I was shocked.my man commented immediately(he usually waits for me to ask him):OMG!what a disgusting, heavy, dirty scent!please have mercy and never wear it again!
I could smell pink sugar's raspberry cotton candy gene somewhere burried beneath loads of dark, bitter, dirtyish notes(probably oud?!)
I didn't give up on it.I can still remember how much I was shocked when I first tried pink sugar and then I started to adore it.I also remember blue sugar was on top of my dislike list for a while and I felt sick when I first tried it
Well,I was right.same thing happened here but fortunately it didn't take too much time like my experience with blue sugar.after three days of full wear,I still don't like black sugar's opening but it soon calms down to a divine drydown.it's too good to be true.I can sometimes detect a hint of fruity, burnt sugar thing of pink sugar but it's mostly pure vanilla heaven with a slight Smokey undertone and a touch of leather, good leather.for me good leather is like leather in Armani code cashmere or Dior homme family.bad leather is leather in shalimar or any other animalic, intense version of leather.I can sometimes smell something like burnt plastic but actually it's not bad.for me black sugar is a dark vanilla-sugar scent or a gourmand with a dark undertone.a sexy pretty cheek in a black leather jacket, smoking cigarette and I prefer it to it's sister,a pretty girly cheek in a short, pink skirt
It's still a modern scent.a gourmand, just a bit more mature than pink sugar
All in all I'm very very happy to have it.it worthes two months of waiting.it's cheap, has a gorgeous bottle and very good longevity.sillage is huge when first sprayed but it soon calms down to something easily recognizable for others but not overpowering
I will definitely repurchase if I see it around.now I've learned not to spray it near hubby.I spray it in my room and wait for ten minutes.then I receive comments such as you smell sexy and yummy
❤❤❤❤❤

gtabasso

The top is a smokey sweet vanilla. The notes are basically burnt sugar and vanilla. Think Bvlgari Black or Midnight in Paris meets lots and lots of sugar. It's quite amazing for such a cheapie, if you like vanilla and gourmand with a little darkness to it.

BottledBrit1million

A cataclysmic scent. Raspberry, vanilla, and some oud. It's similar to Bulgari Black and VC&A Midnight and Paris, but the fun and playfulness is amplified to 100. This is one of my best performers too. It pushes and pushes hard with its sillage. I wish Aquolina would produce more scents like Gold Sugar, and Black Sugar. Have one for each color of the rainbow, I don't care, it's just so good!

carlosalbertoandradecruz

Amazing, inexpensive Unisex fragrance.
I want to try it more before making a review. I also want to feel it more times in my wife to see what's the final veredict for this fragrance: Woman - Unisex - Man ?

Of course that this veredict does not prevent me from again stating that this is a very good and sexy fragrance. On top of it, the performance is above average.

Tigi

Black Sugar is everything that I wanted Pink Sugar to be, and more. I've only been basking in this sweet, vanillic cloud for a few hours now, but have yet to detect any hint of licorice, certainly unlike the way Pink Sugar behaves on my skin.
Black Sugar opens up beautifully sweet, like a shiny new clear molded-plastic box, opened to grant access to freshly-spun, vanillic cotton-candy. The oud and incense (at least at this stage) are melded into a smoky-earthy suggestion of a base. The sillage appears to be moderate after an initial 20 minutes of enormous presence.
Scent, for me, is a good, solid 9/10, exemplary (durn good) for its type.
Value (bang for buck ratio) = excellent!
P.S. The bottle IS lovely in person (although you can't see the liquid level through the densely-opaque black glass).

ETA: Black Sugar is a performance-powerhouse. If you like super-sweet and want serious performance for a modest price, Black Sugar deserves a trial run for sure.

I agree with those who detect a plastic-y, almost-cellophane-wrapped vibe to this but find that element both charming and addictive. Ultimately I had to give this one away because my husband dislikes it but it's still a good fragrance in my opinion.

jreyes366

This perfume really knocked me off my feet. I didn't really know what to expect when I blind bought this, despite having read all the reviews and looking at the notes.

Some people say it has a 'rubber' element to it or a 'plasticy' note but I don't really get too much of either. I can kind of see it a little but I think it's just the initial spray being so strong.

Once this settles down though, it becomes such a smoky delight. I love the quality of this, I find it to be pretty top notch. The woody and leathery qualities are really my absolute favorite, it's not like anything I own. I'm not huge into leather or smoke notes in fragrances just fyi, so this is a brand new world to me.

This is sweet, smoky, tame, mysterious, a little cuddly and a little naughty for good measure. I will wear this scent with pride and turn heads as I pass by.

Lockon

This is a okay scent.
But that oud is messing with me man.
Uh....Oud and i don't mix...
But with the rest of the notes, it balances out.
I don't see my girlfriend liking this...
But we'll give it a shot.
I'll update this in a few days.

I used six sprays...both wrist, back & front of my neck, chest and front of my shirt.

I smell like I just fled a fire in a tannery, spilled my caramel machiato, tripped over a pile of hot tarmac, and landed in a candyfloss machine.
I'm not sure how I feel about this

JanneMan45

Very good one from Aquolina, could be unisex.

Oud sweetened by Vanilla, lasts about 12 hours on me and smells good for female and male!

Very affordable.

Albertos

Sexy, dark, unisex, sweet and yummy. Nice scent! Vanila and oud wood! very, very, very long lasting ...smells 3 days on sweater and leather. Good scent! 5 stars for Black sugar!Stunning!

jodyleek.1

Another delicious and inexpensive gem from Aquolina! Yes, I know it's not exactly like Bulgaria Black, but if you like BB, you'll like this too. It has that same 'sitting in the waiting room of a tire store' accord, like BB. Doesn't have the leather or the smoke of BB. And, it has a black licorice note as well. The raspberry note is pronounced in the dry down, but not really raspberry to my nose. More like cherry flavored car air freshener. The combo sounds weird, but for me, it works. Imagine eating black twizzlers and cotton candy while waiting to get a new set of tires at a tire store. Very fun and sassy, a great one for fall/winter.

TonyAKAMrClean

This lasts and projects extremely consistently - better than just about anything else that I own! Usually, if you find a scent that lasts, it's too loud in the beginning and quiet in the end, but Black Sugar produces the perfect amount of sillage consistently through the day. I applied it at 8:30am, and now here it is at 4:45, and it's still projecting like it did an hour after I put it on!

The last half of its 12 hour life is where the oud really shines through the sweetness, and wow is it nice! The smoky incense + oud combo is similar to Lattafa Raghba, but this is much cleaner, while still retaining a dusty oud vibe. The deep vanilla firmly sets this scent right beside Mancera Aoud Vanille and Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon in my collection, so ladies, don't let me scare you away from this one! I'd love to smell this on a woman just as much as I love smelling it on myself!

This is one of the best Fall scents I've ever encountered. It almost makes you excited for Fall, even if you live for Summer!

Piscean-Blue

What a weird interesting scent. Not at all what I expected! It smells kind of like the wayward lost-sheep cousin of Pink Sugar. The fundamental DNA is the same. It shares Pink Sugar's not-unattractive plasticky element, but amped to the max! To the point where it's reminiscent of burning embers and rubber tires. With, yes, a little bit of sugar thrown in. Also it's quite "dry". Put it this way: think of it as a very, veeery recalibrated version of Pink Sugar.

So yeah... If you like Pink Sugar, as many do, don't assume you're gonna go for this number here. If anything it smells Halloweenish... Like a quirky gimmick scent rather than something you'd wear to, say, work or school. It's more like what you'd spray through a haunted house for effect. "Goth" is a good word for it.

On a personal level, it's not horrible. I've smelled worse. But it's missing something I can't put my finger on. Like it could have been great but some crucial element was left out. I kind of regret buying it.

It does seem like it has potential as a scent you can layer with, so I'm gonna try that and see how it works out.

One more thing: I'm amazed at it being labelled "for women". This stuff is sexless.

missmicale

It's August in Upstate New York, but there's a chill in the air. You start to crave fall, and the sweet scent of burning leaves and bonfires. This has satisfied the craving. I bought this after reading the reviews and it was not what I expected. At first spritz, I thought what in the hell is this. Some sort of burnt rubber and leather concoction, completely off putting. Then it lightly fades. It turns into this charred vanilla marshmallow Halloween scent. It becomes intoxicating and you find yourself addicted. Happy to have come across such a wildly odd fragrance.

astamm62

I don't know why, but this scent is really addictive to me.My favorite scent in this line.I bought a really nice gift set under 25.00 dollars. It had the 100ml fragrance, hair perfume, and a really pretty shower gel,the shower gel had a golden shimmer. It would have been the perfect set, if it came with a golden shimmer body lotion.

PinkRainbow

If Pink Sugar is daylight, Black Sugar is mysterious nighttime. A midnight hour version of the original sweet Pink Sugar with a touch of incense, leather, and mystery. Closely worthy of Shalimar. The perfect compliment to the sweet candy daylight version. Love it.

s2jkbrad

Easy, safe bet with this sugar dream. This reminds me of any "sugar" scent, I've ever bought off of a girlfriend selling some type of makeup/body product. It smells good and delicious. Youthful or for older gals. I can see wearing this school (I'm a high school art teacher) as it wouldn't be offensive to the kids because it smells like candy. Fairly generic but that's ok because it smells yummy and warm-- and I got it for under $15! While I didn't like the bottle online, in person, it presents as sleek, classy and utilitarian.

corkscrewcurly

VERY similar to Khurafi by Lattafa - if you have one, you definitely don't need the other; Khurafi is cheaper, with similar longevity and sillage and is marketed as a unisex scent (so - no - I am not judging you, TonyAKAMrClean! Not that anyone should anyway - wear what makes you happy).

BS is a very sweet, sugary vanilla, with the slightest trace of leather and raspberry. I get no oud, incense, sandalwood or myrrh at all.

There is no resemblance to Bvlgari Black and I do not get the "burnt tyres/rubber" accord others mention.

Like Khurafi, I find this disappointing; both are going on my swap list as - sadly - I don't find them interesting enough.

TonyAKAMrClean

I received a sample of this in a swap and purchased it within an hour of putting it on - FOR ONLY $13! This is the quintessential no brainer!!!

Judge me if you want for buying a women's perfume, but look at the notes! Vanilla, leather, oud, incense, raspberry, myrrh, sandalwood... and its name is Black Sugar. It smells EXACTLY like it sounds! This is absolutely as unisex as it gets!!! Why this is in such a 90's style "pretty-pretty princess" bottle and labeled only for women is FAR beyond me!!! More importantly, its LOW PRICE TAG is far beyond me!

For me, this is similar to Derek Lam's Something Wild (not clone, but similar), but the Derek Lam costs $175. This fits that bill exactly for me. For only $13. THIRTEEN! I'm SERIOUSLY questioning my life right now... this is sooo good!

Also - I wore Elizabeth and James Nirvana Bourbon last night, and this overlapped Bourbon VERY well! I'll likely layer the two to extend the life of my Bourbon! I'm pretty sure this will layer very well with many oud fragrances as well.

shawna_j_davis

I just got this perfume after reading several reviews on it. I like it, but it is different than what I expected. I can definitely smell the leather which I like, but I'm waiting to see how it wears and how long it lasts on my skin.

cinnakitty

In two words: liquorice tyres.

I didnt like this one bit when I first sprayed it. Its very masculine and definitely smells black, but less sugar! I have kept repeating smelling it though, it's certainly unusual but not overly wearable to me at this point.

I expected a freshly roasted marshmallow. I think maybe this could grow on me but I fear that it has only changed slightly to me, and those around me would smell the offputting tyre smell I first did. Full marks for not just being a generic teen sugar bomb but not what I hoped for!

Later this has improved but I think in order to wear this it might need to be either sprayed on me, or the next day's clothing before bed.

lapioggianelpineto1977

I don't get at all the rubber burnt tire smell everyone talks about.
It is very pretty, opens a little bit too much on the masculine side.
Dries down to a beautiful smoky vanilla and at this point it is very feminine.
Very unique and defenitely worth the price.

Waldina80

Shes a different kind of chick. Perhaps an illegitimate daughter, or half sister to PS.

Initial sprays, you will be surprised. Hot black rubber burn-outs in a leather jacket...But stick around...changes happen.

The reviewer who stated it smells like scorched campfire marshmallows was patient & waited for the drydown! It is delightful, and I cannot stop sniffing myself.

A gem & a cheap thrill to be sure...$20 for 3.4 oz edt & 3.4 oz of hair perfume & a big 8.4 oz of shower gel. What a steal!

sophiesnose

It smells like marshmallows roasted over a campfire. Like when you pull off the black charcoal shell and reveal the gooey melted marshmallow inside. The dry down is even better. A hint a cinnamon maybe? Strangely addictive. I have to resist the urge to keep reapplying it, because I certainly don't need more. I just can't stop sniffing my wrist. It lasts and lasts too!!! Weird and delicious!

SmokeDesserts

When first sprayed directly on the skin, this perfume is very intense. It smells like a mixture of incense (the incense, myrrh, and leather notes?), a campfire (the oud?); imagine a campfire made of incense. It eventually settles down a little after about half, but never fades. I never do smell the raspberry, but the Vanilla and sandalwood do tend to worm themselves ever so slightly through as time goes on (I've had it on for about an hour and a half now) and I imagine as time goes on, it'll continue to come through slightly. It's not a bad smell, but I imagine this as more of a smoky desert, but the sweetness barely comes through. IT's nowhere near something I feel I need to get rid of, but I feel like I will have to try and make it work a little better. I'll probably try misting it through the air instead of directly on me and then mist something a little sweeter closer to myself (maybe Pink or Gold Sugar; it may actually help to bring down the original tartness of the Gold).

milano1214

I had to try again.... I can't do it.... smells like not only Tires, but burnt tires on me....

Perfumeaddict777

Black sugar imo has a niche quality. This is one of the best cheapies I've bought. Im not a fan of pink sugar. I had a bottle of gold sugar but only thought it was ok. Black sugar is so unique! I love the leather, oud, insence combo. I don't get any rasperry. At first spray its a strong black leather jacket and insence! Minutes later the oud and vanilla join in. It's a very dark, deep, sexy fragrace. Hours and hours later it dries down to a smoky dark boozy vanilla. It's sweet but not cloying and it feels very wild. Someone who is not into perfumes would feel uncomfortable wearing this. It's an attention grabber. Im amazed at the longevity! I layer alot and today i layered Black Orchid with Black sugar. 12 hours later Black orchid is gone from my skin and guess what... black sugar is still on my skin and still very noticeable. Sillage is also impressive! 6ft of sillage , after settling on the skin it can be smelled from 3ft away and stays like that for a couple hours before being closer to the skin. Im so impressed with this perfumes performance and scent that i just ordered a back up bottle.

uniquechild

This is perfect for me!!! Smoky, beautiful incense, oud, sweet beautiful!!!! I fell straight away in love at first sniff, and have stayed in love ever since!! Deep and rich, soft leather, creamy vanilla and beautiful oud and heavenly incense. It's so so so good!!!!! And I adore the gorgeous stunning bottle!!!! It's wonderful - everything about it I love. Oh oh oh!!!!! And I get compliments over and over everywhere I go!! My husband adores it on me, and himself!! We love wearing it together, it's such FUN!!!! Beautiful Black Sugar - I love you!!!

ascotnot

This brings my Aquolina inventory into balance. I spent $20 on a handful of Blue Sugar samples after reading some positive reviews and they've been sitting in the drawer ever since my first two samplings of it - I could never wear that. I got the black for cheap though, and I really like it. You do need to give it a moment to settle. The oud and vanilla work nicely together. I want to try adding just a tiny spray of some dirty oud to lay on top of it to give it a little extra pop. At the price, this is worth a try if you like this kind of stuff - above average as a low-priced oud.

ecofreak2001

Wow! This is love at first sniff; a gorgeous dark blend of sweet with almost liquid smoke. It reminds me of having marshmallows on a camp fire. Has an ethnic vibe with the resins and incense. Love to layer it with vanilla perfumes. It's great with Gold Sugar. You can really have fun with this one.

Gemini66

This is a tough call, not because Black Sugar isn't a sweet, engaging delight, but because I hoped it would be a tad more masculine ( for a women's fragrance no less!) than I thought. B.S. is a thoroughly enticing scent, vanilla & fruit definitely! I also get the leather and smoke, for a guy to wear is strictly up to interpretation; it is seductive and makes we want to cuddle with some-one while they wear it! Guys, if you are gonna try B.S. casual date night occasion is what I would recommend, but wear as it makes you feel! For me it makes me want to cuddle & snuggle on cold days or nights. It is pretty, not in a girly floral way but in "that girl in the little black dress" kind of way. I would resist spraying it on like it was Cool Water or something,a little does a lot! This is a solid Fall/cold weather scent, a new black sweater with your best fitting jeans kind of fragrance that tilts nicely to the softer side of masculinity. I do recommend this and glad I own a bottle. A keeper! This is more like what I hoped for when I purchased JPG's Kokorico, unabashed sexiness! A solid COME HITHER scent for the naughty ones!

AliaC.

This is nice. It's raspberry and leather(almost plasticky ) I wish it would be more incensy..

Eyviab

So yummy! To me it smells like going out at night... wearing sweet vanilla perfume under a designer leather jacket mmmm going somewhere to party and you walk in and smell incense.... mmmm having a great time waking up the next morning with a yummy mix of those three elements in your hair... Yes a good night out indeed! So to be honest I am a gormound lover but I have been stepping into other smells and learning to appreciate them. This is a good start into my oud journey since it is a baby step for me! So far this gets a thumbs up from lil old me!

I would add this is pretty bad ass bc it's unisex for sure sillage is good and I put it on at 8am it's now almost 5pm and it's still alive and kicking drydown is so yummy!

Mbrock

This smells just like Pink Sugar & they just added a weird wood smell. Not woodsy, just like pencil box wood smell. Also, some other weird scent of plastic. I am very disappointed. I love Gold Sugar but I dont think this perfume is very good at all.

UnearthlyApothecary

This is a very surprising offering from Aquolina. The Oud/Leather combination is much stronger then I expected, the leather note is stronger here then in many leather based EDP's that I own. The "sugar" is also very much present here, this is a sweet perfume but I can easily see men wearing it. This is a very good introduction to Oud, probably the most wearable I have yet encountered. Oud can smell a little plasticky, and combined with the vanilla it really amps the "doll head" I don't agree that this is not a serious perfume. It's very well blended and long lasting. When this one was created, the nose meant business. I am very pleased to finally own a bottle thanks to a very generous giveaway hosted by pepperjune :) This is a perfect fall scent

Bee-young-ka

Fun and a bity naughty.

Has a plastic dolls head note which I don't mind for a change.

Not a serious perfume.

Myrrh is there but in no way deep or smoky its too sweet.

Fun value only for me.

update: given a few hours to settle down from smelling like incense burnt at church of the plastic dolls head. This is much more enjoyable and very yummy vanilla.

Put it on at least an hour before going out.

Madrona

Very similar to Shay & Blue Framboise Noire but cheaper, of course. Maybe a tad sweeter/slightly less dark. I sent my sample of that particular fragrance as an extra to someone in a swap so I can't compare them directly, going by memory only. It has the same pink/black raspberry/salmiac jelly skull candy vibe going on so of course I am very fond of it, as I love the juxtaposition of fruitiness and pitch black salmiac. Very pleasing.

Eesa

I think this scent is super sexy, and it's a favorite for me. It's really smoky, almost like campfire level when first sprayed. This is my favorite use of leather in a fragrance; I find a lot of perfumes having it now but not being able to actually produce a great scent like this does here. Thankfully, it's not too sweet, just the perfect dash of sweetness. It's so fun to wear this, since I get big whiffs of smoke then vanilla alternating. I don't care if it's super sexy, I love it so much I'll wear it anytime, anywhere. Longevity and sillage are outstanding, as I expect from Aquolina. Definitely try this one out!

Yurpdod

I actually really like Aquolina and the fragrances they release. They only do one type of scent (dense, rich gourmand) but they do it really well. Two of my all-time favorite gourmands are Blue Sugar, a tooth-achingly sweet take on licorice and woods, and Gold Sugar, a caramelized coconut-creme extravaganza. It's an added bonus that they are very inexpensive, widely available, and perform very well as far as projection and wear-time. I even think the tacky bottles are kind of charming.

Needless to say I was excited to try Black Sugar, but this fragrance is a misfire for me, unfortunately. The vanilla smells very cheap and the oud note basically just smells like a Sharpie. I don't mind synthetic notes at all but this fragrance smells like a petroleum byproduct. It also has that "doll head" scent that I know many other people enjoy, but I've always found that plastic/rubber/vanilla smell to be a little revolting. There is almost nothing about this fragrance that I personally like, but if you like this scent then I'm happy to tell you that the sillage and longevity are very impressive. Black Sugar is not for me and I will be giving the bottle away, hopefully to someone who enjoys it more. However, I still believe in Aquolina and will be excited to smell their next release, whenever it is.

who.am.i.you

I love everything about this! The facets that I love in Pink Sugar, this has, but is also smoky, rubbery, oudy, and incensy. Love, love, love! This is surprisingly amazing to me -- I know not everyone feels this way. I find it difficult to describe. I keep getting wafts of this delicious scent and I feel that it changes very beautifully on my skin. Mmm.

LLB_addict

Oud 101. Baby step into that world with this first. Scrumptious!

nettoyant

This scent is completely unexpected coming from Aquolina! It's so dense, rich and dry. Tonka isn't listed here but it is listed high up on the ingredient list on the bottle. To me, it's very noticeable. Sure, there's vanilla, sweetness (raspberry) and oud but tonka is right up there. As for the oud being synthetic, very few houses use anything but synthetic oud and the oud here is no more synthetic than any other.

So, the sum of the parts does end up smelling like dry, sweet rubber or tar but when I tested it and asked everyone I saw - husband, son and group of friends (6 women, 1 man) - that day, no one said it smelled like tar or rubber. It smelled "sweet", "smokey", "sweet powder", "nice", and "sexy". Granted, none of these folks are very knowledgable about fragrances but they've all smelled rubber, for sure. And, I asked them to be honest. If it didn't smell like perfume or pleasant, tell me.

So, it has a bit of a rubber vibe, sure, but it is more slightly smokey, dry, sweet, powder and resiny rich. I think the dry and (sort of) acrid rubber smell comes from the tonka, oud and leather combination. But, it's so sweet, this facet is well tempered. It will be really nice on a cold winter day. I'm honestly not sure I'll keep it, it's really heavy and kind of cloying. But, it was definitely worth trying for the fun of it.

tandaina

So apparently super cheap synthetic oud disagrees with my nose it's all I can smell and it's horrid.

mrsg34

The notes intrigued me, the fact it was hard to find more so but the reality was a let down for me.
If you like sweet perfumes ( and I mean sweet) mixed with a rubbery, faint leather smell then this is for you. It reminds me of Midnight in Paris which again wasn't my thing but very popular on here. I don't want to sound a niche snob but there are much better smoky, incense, leather combo's in the niche perfumery world with less synthetic smelling vanilla, but for the price your paying here it's not too bad. I shall finish with saying that it's not for me but I'm glad I tried it and worth a punt if you like sweet, fun scents with a darker twist, just don't expect anything groundbreaking.

Hippo Princess

Oh, this is delicious! In the opening, there is a definite kinky rubbery note up close, but in passing it's just a lovely vanilla caramel.

I'm sensitive to oud and I'm afraid I'm just not getting any here, nor anything resembling raspberry. Just caramel (burnt sugar) and rubber.

It is quite similar to Bvlgari Black, but I think this is louder and raunchier, and you don't have to wait so long to get to the lovely vanilla bit. Black Sugar is like Black's flirty alter ego.

James99

@RoyalPerez516 this is for both sexes, i don't find it feminine at all so yea guys can wear this[i guess it was labeled for women because of the sweetness!].Its smoky!,smoky, did i say smokey?!lol I sprayed this couple days ago and my sister asked if someone was smoking?!This could be your thing.

RoyalPerez516

I love dark, rebellious scents, bulgari black being one of them. Can somone tell me if a guy can pull this off? Or is it too feminine?

SuzanneS

Very interesting perfume for the price point. Usually you get generic sugar fruitchoulis or whatever is in Vogue, but this does not come off synthetic. After spraying give it 5-10min to settle down before smelling it.

You get leather dipped in raspberry syrup and touches of oud.Roasted marshmallow lilt with the vanilla. A little rubber reminicent of Blv Black.

This is a very sophisticated idea and does not go with the traditional pink sugar route. Its concept is more inline with the leather angel cuir flanker of leather dipped in something.

This is good for...
Someone into leather soaked scents
Oud tolerant
Raspberry lover
Sophisticated -niche lover on the cheap
This will repel sweet sugar babies.

Great bang for your Buck if your into leather!

Beantoes

If black sugar was a woman she would be a punk rocker without a doubt. Black vinyl pants, leather boots with thick rubber soles, smoking a vanilla cigarillo and her hair smells of raspberries. I like this, even though it's strange. In fact, I like this because it's strange. It doesn't smell like you're wearing a perfume, but more like you're wearing a feeling. That feeling is strong, tough and independent. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it couldn't care less about anyone's opinion. There is sweetness there but it's hidden in the background behind the rubbery vinyl and oily smooth leather and you have to pay attention if you want to find it. I adore this, I don't know how others will feel about me wearing it around them, but I'm pretty sure once it's on I won't give a damn.

Nikinoo

So I got this today and I must say I just keep sniffing my wrist but not in a omg I love this scent its more omg I can't figure this out. As soon as I sprayed this I got this serious rubber note and I don't hate it but I'm not in love with it either. My sinuses have been acting up because it's spring so I will update my review when that passes. I do like the incense in this one and the spicey notes as well. Definitely smell the myrrh and OUD in it as well. Aqualina did well making the notes present. It's pretty strong so a little goes a looooong way but it's not a sillage monster. If you are in close quarters the burnt rubber smell could possibly irritate others. I am hoping that note goes out the door because I can see myself really liking it.

milazinha

If anyone has a bottle of this to swap, please PM me! I haven't smelled it yet, but I'm too curious to try.

aspirina

Burnt rubber, oud, dark vanilla and more rubber. Not an easy fragrance, but with great potential for layering with a soft floral scent. Very similar to Bvlgari Black and a cheapie from the Cuba line called Cuba Night (not in the database)

stardust808

This is chewing a big fat wad of the Hubba Bubba while peeling out layin' rubber heading right into a bonfire. Sounds terrible I know but I love it! Bad ass!

Ferminadaza

Aww man! This is good. If Pink Sugar is little girl cotton candy, then Black Sugar is grown folks creme brulee.

Ride out the initial good year tire blast and try to relax through the moments of bug spray because I promise--- the good times are a-coming.

When it all melds together into a burnt sugar caramelized crust lying above a full fat heavy whipped vanilla cream custard filling, you'll be glad that you were patient with Black Sugar and allowed it to do it's thing.

This perfume will make your jeans fit tighter and your blood sugar shoot through the roof, but it's okay because you had fun and that's all that mattered.

Much like actual creme brulee, just a dab is really enough. Sillage is potent and the longevity is just enough to allow for the usual next day calorie regrets.

Fancypotatosmoothie

I am a huge fan of Pink Sugar by Aquolina so I'd thought I would bite the bullet and buy Black Sugar online. The packaging is so beautiful, mysterious, and classy looking. BUT I became really disappointed after the first spray. Black Sugar smells like literal burning wood. I still wanted to give it a chance so I let it settle after a few minutes and the raspberry and vanilla came through mixed with the burning wood and some other annoying scent thrown in. It was much too strong for me. My boyfriend HATED it and wouldn't go any where near me! LOL! However the longevity is AMAZING and lasted all day. I'm not saying it was a terrible scent but it just wasn't for me. It's such a shame because I absolutely adored the packaging :(

James99

I got this from a swap,thank you shell_bell.
@Lady Rain is correct, its burning wood in the opening which is very strong and can be a turn off. After an hour, raspberry and vanilla takes over with the burning wood/smoky in the background. This a really good fragrance for both sexes at low prices.I love black sugar.

yukokadono

I never thought this brand products are within my tastes since I am older.
Because some of my favorite notes are oud and myrrh, because this tester was almost free of the price, I ordered the bottle among other fragrances.
A Very very nice fragrance for the price. very warm, deep, cozy, sweet scents.
cold snowy day, I wear it on my chest under a turtleneck.
I do not notice any offensive rubber scent like I do from Bvlgari Black.
This scent calms me down when I am craving for sweet.

BuenaGirl

The below is my review - I think because it took me so long to write it (I'm at work - shhh! Don't tell!)it bumped me out. Oops!

I'm very much enjoying this perfume - I'm wearing it today, and wore it yesterday as well. I bought this as a blind buy - a tester for $15! - based on the notes and reviews so these are my first experiences with it.

The funny thing is, because it sounded like it would be SO BIG, I was waiting for the colder temps to give it try - I'm sorry I waited, because it's really lovely and not huge at all on me. I could have been enjoying it longer, lol! I agree with Anywho in that I find it to be quite a soft scent and very wearable - I'm not at all concerned with being overwhelming to my neighbors on the train or in the office. Frankly, I was hoping for a bit more oomph from this but of course it all comes down to personal chemistry. Once I let that notion go, I can take this beautiful, soft fragrance for what it is. I get some sense of the other 'Sugars' - I have Pink Sugar Sensual and have smelled Sparks, though I have yet to smell the original PS - with the first burst of sweet burnt sugar. I don't find it harsh at all, the 'burnt' quality burns away (tee hee!) but the sweetness remains throughout the day for me, but softly. I don't feel overly sugared, or gourmand-y. The amber comes through a lot for me and hints of leather. Overall, a really beautiful, soft, frag that I think is appropriate for fall, winter and probably spring as well.

Yesterday morning I spritzed around 7:30, and it was still going more than 12 hours later - great for an EDT!

Anywho

A comment to hithorys' and Lady Rain's review.

The word rubber has by no means be 'misused'. If rubber (burnt or otherwise) is the impression that reviewers have, then it is unreasonable to argue with their subjective perception of that particular note.

Reading your review (hithorys) I assume that you do not smell the burnt rubber note, but it does not negate the fact that others do. It just shows that we all perceive scents differently and one cannot be sure to get the same impression of a scent that others do. Writing a review can be helpful to others in a broader sense but it is still a highly individual affair that can be used by others as a guide only.

In the end your own nose does what it wants and will translate a scent to you the way it chooses to, regardless of how much you would like to command it otherwise. In that sense we are at the mercy of our noses and are not to blame for any differences in 'translation'.

As to Lady Rain's review, I don't think that "the opening smells like burning wood, which is oud" (despite how true that is) would necessarily elicit more courage by some to try the scent than 'burnt rubber' would. I perceive burnt rubber mixed with oud myself in the opening blast and after a few minutes the rubber disappears. I love this scent. So, that tells me that I like oud, and again, if reviewers have the impression of rubber (burnt or otherwise) in the opening than that is probably how their noses translate burning wood (oud) to them (at least on initial spray) and that needs to be respected.

hithorys

I can't add to what has already been said, and eloquently. The descriptions in the reviews, of leather, smoke, incense, and sugar are brilliant, and sum the fragrance up so passionately. All I can add is that I, personally, am glad I did not turn this gem away over the misuse of "rubber". It can "hit the road". ;-)

-I also review perfumes safe for migraine sufferers and this one has neither caused one nor aggravated one.

Anywho

Black Sugar is very aptly named. At first whiff I am overwhelmed by this burnt rubber note which fortunately only lasts a few minutes. The rubber recedes into the background and the vanilla, raspberry and sandalwood come to the foreground and melt with the myrrh, oud and leather into a sweet and very yummy potpourri that keeps me sniffing my wrist. I just got a sample of this and I am fortunate enough to be able to get a hold of a full bottle as well. Black Sugar is what I had hoped Gold Sugar would be and is to me like Cuir de Lancôme's harmless, casual sister. BS, with all the leather, oud and myrrh, is actually a very wearable and soft scent imo. I don't find it loud at all. I am wearing this at the moment as the temperatures soar in my neck of the woods. This is a truly beautiful scent I will wear any time of the day (or night).

lirael00

OMG, the openning i was like hell no, but then...then after few minutes, pure sugary smokey paradise. I get a lot of smokey vanilla and I think that Black Sugar deserves even more praise than original Pink Sugar. The projection and silage are monstrous, which is why I love Black Sugar even more. Do not get turn off by the openning which smells like a burning rubber, just wait and see! I got so many compliments wearing this, so that's why in my book is a winner!

matillyrose

If Pink Sugar had an older bad brother Black Sugar would be it. He smokes, drinks, wears leather and rides a big fast motorcycle. Who doesn't love a bad boy some time in their life?

Rich, dark, syrupy molasses, smells amazing. Dries down to a musky, slightly spicy, vanilla sweet scent that is just delicious.

This perfume is wonderful layered with a white floral fragrance, really gives the flowers some depth. I have this on at the moment with Oscar de la Renta Intrusion.

Definitely can be worn by either sex, smells damn sexy on my man.

Love the bottle, haven't come across one Pink Sugar perfume I haven't liked yet. I wish they would bring Blue Sugar back.

morningviewangel99

Two words: it's bad. I'm so glad I received a free sample of this because it saved me from wasting my money. This is absolutely awful with my body chemistry; it smells just like strong rubber. :( It was making me nauseated and I had to scrub it off. I seriously can't get anything else from it but strong, synthetic, chemically rubber. My hubby hated it too; this officially takes the award for worst fragrance on me ever and I was very surprised. I love Pink Sugar and Gold Sugar and this is nothing like those. Overall grade: F for obvious reasons.

Cinlee

I bought this as a blind buy based on the reviews here & I absolutely love it!! This is my new signature scent!! Its sweet, smokey, incensey, vanilla & myrrh, with a hint of leather.... to me it's like nothing else I've ever smelt, which is exactly what I was looking for. For years my signature scent was Fendi Original or (Donna as some call it) and when that was discontinued I was lost. I've searched for a unique, individual & exotic perfume to replace my beloved Fendi & I have found it in Black Sugar.

Has good sillage & on me great longevity... Love love love this one!

Sierrasaurusrex

Wow, this is amazing!! It smells like someone just lit a woodburning stove with a tiny bit of fire starter, it has a tiny chemical note. I'm eating some smores and drinking cocoa. It's warm and sweet and woodsy. Perfect for winter.

truffles

Received a sample of this today from dear member Patxaran.
To my nose, and without looking at the listed notes, Black Sugar is a big fake grape sandwich, a big fat fake grape with rubber on one side and vanilla on the other.
Sounds disgusting but the effect is actually really lovely!
I didn't like either Pink Sugar or Pink Sugar Sensual so Black is a nice surprise.
I also think it's much nicer than Bvlgari Black.
Now on my want list!

Soutty123

Very weird start (burning tyres) but gets better after about 10 minutes and smells lovely after about 20 minutes. Much more unisex than Pink Sugar. Good for the price.

RapidScent

Mmm, smells so good. It makes a great fall scent. When I smell this, there's burning leaves and roasting marshmallows at a bonfire. Its warm and woodsy with some sweetness to it. Plus, it's inexpensive. The bottle itself is beautiful too, mysterious like the juice inside.

ChloeBaldino

I LOVE THIS PERFUME. Oh my goodness. I have been wanting to blind buy this for a year and finally had the balls to order it. It is lovely, deep, exotic. It is unlike anything I've ever smelled but still strikes a nostalgic chord. The leather is honestly very heavy at first. But within about 15 minutes, this fragrance turns into woody incense and semi-fruity vanilla. It's awesome. Still has that hint of leather but it blends and fades so well. The smell of this perfume lingering on my skin in the morning was tantalizing. After 4 hours the leather and heavy oud fade out a lot and it turns into a creamy, smoky vanilla. The oud and myrrh is soooo exotic. I really truly love it. I layered this with the body wash and the leather note was too strong for me, but with a strawberry body wash I get more of the smoky/woody vanilla that I adore. This may be on its way to becoming my signature scent.

Molko

The smell is like toned down Blue sugar with a lot of vanilla and smoky notes. The vanilla is too much and synthetic, so I can't smell any oud, rather leather/rubber. The smell itself is not bad, vanilla cookie with burned incense in moderate way.
It's a nice attempt to make an oriental-incense stuff from Aquolina, but I think there is too much sweet notes and just a little from darker and exotic components like oud, leather, not enough dark for me.
Slightly too sweet to be unisex, but it touches the edge of gender border.
Smell: 5/4
Projection: 5/3 (first 1-2 hours is strong after low to moderate)
Price-value: 5/5

Alysha

I was scared of the leather and rubber comments below, but I found this online for a good price and aquolina hasn't disappointed me yet. I like this. The scent is luxurious and soft, with our familiar pink sugar undertones all throughout. I don't get rubber tire, it's more like I'm getting oud but I am training my nose because this is is a new type of note for me.
The scent is sweet and almost yummy. It reminds me of chocolate chip cookies, not freshly baked by the ones you buy in the cookie aisle in the store.
I actually couldn't detect leather in this, at least nothing strong. I don't like leather smells (leather stores repel me) but this fragrance was not offensive at all. I got 2 compliments on it.

Bigsly

I really like this raspberry-tinted sugar versus "dark" notes composition. This is what I had hoped many "high end" designers would be like, instead of the trend we see, at least in "masculines," of mish-mash/pastiche scents that aren't much more interesting than deodorants. What's great here is that the "dark" qualities persist enough to make this rotation-worthy. And from what I understand, this should be listed as unisex. Both longevity and projection are at least good. Warning: if you don't like tar/vinyl type notes you may dislike this one.

cake n' cuddles

I am not a fan of oud. but being a huge fan of the pink sugar line I really wanted to try this fragrance. Fortunately someone was kind enough to send me a sample. I didn't have the highest hopes for this fragrance but it smells better than what I had expected. It smells quite a bit like pink sugar without licorice. I am surprised it kept it's signature scent so well with almost no pink sugar notes in this fragrance. The other part of the scent I can definitely smell leather and oud. To me it smells like tires, and I'm not exactly in love. I have liked leather scents before like midnight in paris but I am not too keen on this leather. Overall to me this scent is OK. Shockingly black sugar is actually pretty light in silage/projection compared to original pink sugar. I'll be passing the rest of my sample along.

Museumgal

This scent is such a contradiction -- the extremely sweet vanilla candy mixed with an intense leatheroud combination. It's so strange a combination you can't tell if it blends beautifully or clashes horribly. It's interesting and unique. Very strong, lasts a long time -- not a scent if you're hoping to blend in. It's a fun scent for an informal party or clubbing -- nothing serious here and like the rest of the line I think it's supposed to be a fun scent. Nothing else like it, you'll either love it or hate it on first sniff. I happen to love it but YMMV -- even if you love all the notes you might not like the combination.

shancat

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! Not much more that I can add except thanks to all for the reviews. They prepared me for the opening...it can have a "rubber tire" kind of essence but I believe that it's the leather and incence. I've never smelled pure oud so not sure what it smells like but did a little research on it...basically what I derived is that oud is the resin from moss or mold grown on certain trees. The tree is called AQUILARIA, it's a tropical evergreen. It takes hundreds of years for it to "rot" to perfection. It's fascinating if you get a chance to read up on. It's been around for thousands of years in Asia and the Middle East and Black Sugar has been popular in the Eastern world but slowly catching on in the West. The impression I got at first use/spray or whiff was a mixture of leather, incense and the original P.S. lightly underlying. After I spray on and wear out in the heat it turns into something exotic and sensual. I live in Colorado where it's dry but does get warm in summer. I've tried wearing it in both warm and cool weather and IMO it really shines in the heat....I've gotten tons of compliments and this will be a staple in my collection....Thanks again for all of your reviews, they're very helpfu..<3<3<3!!!

Norgirl

Ohh my G... Why was i so scared of this .. the Oud realy had me scared on this one , i was so affraid it would be to dominent . But that is not the case at all. I can hardly detect it.
I love how this one, The leather the woods the darkness the slight touch of incense mixed with the original Pink sugar . I LOVE it . So right so jummy so delicius , nead a big bottle

Chicago Tony T

Whoever labels scents at Aquolina should be fired. This should be labeled as unisex as well as Blue Sugar. The opening is a bit hard to handle but the dry down is heavenly. The longer you wear it the more evident the berry and vanilla are. The darker notes really balance it out well making it acceptable for males also IMO. Longevity and sillage are awesome, over 10 hours! At 15 bucks why not!!

enigmaticessence

The powder in this scent makes the surprising berries rich and seductive. Strong, rubbery smoke and woods embraced by the sweetness of wine and powder of dreams.

Huge sillage and good lasting power, this is really best in cool weather. Sprayed underneath clothing, it begins to have a personal touch that is quite intimate. It has the warmth of a sweater or hug of understanding.

mschnabel666

I have to blind buy all my scents, I live in the middle of nowhere Michigan. Aquolina is my favorite brand, and they have yet to let me down (with all blind buys).... but Black Sugar scares me. I love gourmands, not rubber tires, incense, myrrh, and I don't even know what oud is!! But... it's Aquolina, so when ebay prices went down to $17 for a capped bottle... I did it.

Black Sugar is the goth sister of Pink Sugar. She smells JUST like PS, but she's smoking a cigarette, wearing a leather jacket, and burning incense. Since I'm somewhat of a goth myself (more punk)-- I love this. It's not a LOVE-LOVE, but it's a pleasant surprise that keeps me very interested. Sure, I'm not a huge fan of the "using PS to light tires on fire smell" which lasts the first few minutes, but then turns into this complex mixture of...
-burned raspberry cotton candy (smells like PS Sparks in that aspect)
-PS Incense... like if Aquolina made that.
-Woody sweet.
-Pink Sugar spilled on a leather couch
-Someone wearing PS in a church (the myrrh)

I like the review below mine, comparing this to Dior Addict... I get that. The smoky vanilla. But this is like Dior Addict meets Jimmy Choo Exotic (patchouli and raspberry).

It's dark and mysterious, but still that girlie PS fun. I'm so glad I tried this! I love the dark bottle!!! But I did "shave" off some black paint from the bottle so I could make sure my bottle was indeed full. I hate bottles that make it impossible to see the fluid line. :(

It doesn't last quite like the original PS... but it's potent and I can smell myself enough. :) I did one squirt on my arm to test the skin, and that faded in about 3 hours totally, and mostly smelled of the leather. So def a clothing scent. I want to try the hair perfume now... lol....

Kompeito

I got this as a blind buy super cheap on ebay and really wasn't sure if I would like it.

This purchase was a very pleasant surprise!
This is a very nice dark vanilla and myrrh oriental. Surprisingly nice, considering I only paid $16 for it. Lots of dark woods and incense, then a layer of creamy vanilla, a touch of burnt sugar, and a hint of raspberries.

It feels like a second cousin of Dior addict. They have a similar feel with the dark woody vanilla with a hint of berry and the same level of sweetness . Black sugar is woodier and very heavy in myrrh incense, where addict is more peppery leaves and florals.

It's dark, baddass, and feminine. Feels way classier than it costs.
I definitely recommend it.

fullbottleworthy

Tbh, the reviews scared me a bit. I was picturing burning rubber, gagging, barely getting through the opening... But this isn't what happened at all. I first smelled the original Pink Sugar. No doubt it was there. I think I just picked it out so readily because I'm very familiar with Pink Sugar. But what was ultimately more noticeable was the oud attempt. It really did have a sort of burning rubber/oud thing going on, but in a very pleasant way. I liken it to riding a flaming tire down an asphalt road while wearing a leather jacket and eating a raspberry lollipop haha. I can't really explain why, but I was really really digging it. I think a lot of these Western oud scents dial back the oud so much that you can barely detect it, or it doesn't smell anything like pure oud. I've smelled pure oud, and in fact, I have a very small vial of the real thing. Does this perfume smell like that? Well, no, but it smells more like oud than many other high end scents that are supposed to smell like oud but don't because they think Westerners won't like it. I get it.

All in all, the smoky/leathery/fake oud mixed with the berries just works. I can't explain it, but it does.

sassy_shamrock

Just got this one and it wasn't what I expected at all. It's soft & sexy yet empowering at the same time. I pull out the leather & oud but in a sweet sensual way. Will definitely be my fall go to perfume.

Like someone poured about a dozen bottles of Pink Sugar over a tire and set it ablaze while a nurse rubbed an antiseptic swab on me in preparation for a needle. That is what the opening spray of Black Sugar smelled like to me. My first thought - What have I done?!? Then after a few minutes, the smoke and the oud calmed down and I was left with a mix of Pink Sugar and Bulgari Black, with a hint of sweet raspberry thrown in. And I gotta say - I liked it. It only got better as time went on. Tenacious too... I could still pick up traces of it on my skin nearly 12 hours later. Many people will be thrown off by those opening moments, which is a shame, because this is a unique wonderful scent that is worth seeing through to the end.

On my skin, there is a weird rubber note that I do not care for very much.

This is so beautiful. I didn't know what to expect from this at all. I mean, Pink Sugar as an oriental with incense? Pink Sugar with leather and oud?

The first thing to say is that this is very well blended. you aren't hit with any one note all at once. The incense is there, the oud is there, the leather is there - and, of course, the sweet is there. But none of them is clearly in command.

Those notes *are* there, however. If you don't like any of them, you might not like this. In fact, I could detect every note listed, which is pretty rare for me. I suppose it helped that there were only seven rather than twenty-three.

The incense and leather die down as time goes by, and you're left with a slightly smoky (but not burnt) version of Pink Sugar, perhaps with a litle extra raspberry. Yum!

Sillage on this is nice, but not as strong as Pink Sugar. It lasts and lasts.

danceforjoy

Oh! I should have known better. This is over-sized pleather furniture, black velvet paintings and convenience store incense. Yet, unlike Pink Sugar, this one is strangely compelling. Hmm.

Luna Rebel's review is spot on!

I personally feel that if more people who like dark, smoky fragrances were to try this the ratings would soar. Those in the typical Pink Sugar camp may well be unimpressed. It's sweet all right, but not recognizably 'sugar' until drydown. There's a REASON it's primarily marketed in the middle east! The western market may not be equal to the stunningly strong opening or the darker vibes throughout.

To put this into perspective, some of my favorites include Habanita and Tabu. While not claiming classic status for Black Sugar, it fits in perfectly with these stunning beauties. The opening especially is so reminiscent of the past that I feel I've discovered a 'new' vintage! I'm head over heels. Think Blackest leather touched with raspberry and cushioned under it all with pillowy sweetness.....WOW.

Summary - If you love the sweeter side of darkness and can tolerate a hint of oud, Black Sugar is not to be missed!

Wow the opening is bad.. VERY bad!! Like butane and cheap hair spray kind of bad! Smells flammable.

At first I thought I had gotten a fake but then in the drydown it started to calm down and original Pink Sugar scent started to come thru. That's all there is to Black Sugar.. strong Oud (very cheap Oud) opening with a Pink Sugar drydown. Definitely test before you buy.

I'm going to try this again tonight. My first impression was, yes, a smack in the face when first applied which I found odd for this Sugar line. However, after about a 1/2 hour, it calmed down and smelled "unique".....a little odd but good. I am an oud lover and I cannot put a fine point on that note. It must be really mixed with something else to disguise itself. Like I said.....first impression - unique. I'll follow up if my opinion differs later. Probably not a good selection to blind buy.

Got this in at work today so I finally got to try this out must say this is nice, can't say I've ever been a fan of Pink sugar, I'm a sweety lover but Pink sugar always is a bit much for me...Now this has no exception b/c when you first spray it, yea it does scream at you a bit && it did stifle me at first, however its, its uniqueness that makes me over look it, first spray you really get the Oud note with the leather which idk kinda dirty's up the scent && adds a masculine quality to it && you pick up those sweeter undertones that make it quite nice. As it dries down more of the sweeter tones emerge and what you get is that classic pink sugar base. Longevity it top notch && silage isn't bad either, I see this as a fun nice going out scent perfect for the gourmand lovers on those colder winter months. I let my momma smell it && she said hmmm smells like it has oud in it, so yes the oud is detectable. So yea not bad! try it out if you're interested. :)

Overall: 8/10

Well, I finally got this today. I found it on eBay for cheap,so I'm not really bummed about wasting money; however, this is so weird! I can definitely tell this is an Aquolina scent because it resembles Pink Sugar and Pink Sugar Sensual but that oud note- it's just strange at least to my nose!

If you like Gold Sugar or M. Micallef Vanille Aoud then you will enjoy Black Sugar. While it doesn't smell exactly like either of those, it could sit on a shelf with them as family members.

It is cozy and warm as beaty_girl suspected. Sweet but not over the top.
First spray opening notes are lovely, then yes a bit of a strange masculine bug spray phase, but this is brief. That is the part that really makes me think of Gold Sugar, however with Black Sugar it quickly fades. Where I had a brief "uh-oh" moment, shortly after I noticed something very nice in the air, and this is where it stayed. Slightly masculine but still feminine enough to not smell like men's cologne. Sweet, cozy, vanillic, oud, warm, maybe just a tiny hint of smokiness in the background.
Give it a chance to adjust before you decide. I'm glad I decided to blind buy.

magdalinasugar I was so sad to see your review - I can't help but wonder if you got a bad bottle. I did not get the bug spray thing at all. What I got was almost the same as Sensual yet with a roasted marshmellow mild OUD thing. But it did not at all smell buggy. I would send those back something does not sound right.

And nope this is not ground breaking perfume it's so close to the pink and sensual brand with just that hint of OUD. My boys say it smells like skittles. message me I am curious about your bottles. I would send them back and not throw them out.

After one year of research and anticipation, suddenly I discovered it on ebay a couple of weeks ago. Being an Aquolina junkie as I am, I ordered two large bottles blindly… When they arrived, I started to get a fast heartbeat while ripping of the plastic in euphoria! Finally, I am holding it in my hands!!

Oh my Lord, what a disappointment. I couldn't believe my nose and senses; what is this that I'm smelling? Honestly, my first reaction was that I probably was sent some fake perfume. NO!!! This cannot be Aquolina, NOWAY.

Then the sad reality struck me - it IS the long awaited Black Sugar, there is nothing fake about it, it's all genuine, and it smells like….well. an ant and roach killer spray!

The smell is so bitter, rubbery, synthetic; NOTHING AT ALL what it claims to be. It's so bad, I will not use it even as a room spray.

No character, no charm, so boring, just a blah scent…

Well, I wasted $85.00 and will toss them in the garbage.

Don't make the same mistake - smell this before buying!

Sweet Jesus and all the Angels and Saints it is a miracle! I think someone smuggled in a case of Black Sugar into the states and I got a bottle. After the shock of actually holding this mythical creature that I thought was an Aquolina tease - a non existant joke... I got to test it. This is Black Sugar:

It comes in the traditional cylinder case as shown in the photo above. All the packaging is identical minus this one is black. Upon first spritz I felt somewhat dissapointed.. could it be this is just pink sugar mislabeled? Then about 15 seconds later the OUD was picked up. It's a gentle OUD. Not loud and strong like some of the higher end OUD scents but it is present in mild form.

Black sugar has striking similarities to it's sisters Pink Sugar and Pink Sugar Sensual however there is a pinch and dash of OUD in here. All in all if your a gourmand lover dipping your toes into OUD you might enjoy this. Obviously this is not a $100 niche like fragrance but if your a pink sugar lover I would imagine this one would be pleasing to you. Lasting power seems pretty darn good as well.

I have no idea why this fragrance was not introduced into the USA. My personal feelings are that it would have been a massive hit here in the states. For whatever reason they held back on doing this. Maybe it finally is released or just maybe I am lucky.

AsymptoticFaery

I am also wondering where this new Aquolina fragrance can be found. I am in the states (California, to be exact), and as soon as I learned about this new release, I was excited to get it.

But, I do not see it for purchase anywhere, and I've asked around about it in stores, especially Sephora, and there's been no knowledge about this perfume.

Was it only released overseas?

I can't even find it for sale in any online stores. Too bad...

VioletCarson

seems to be much more pricey than other aquolina edt. for sale in italy, 100ml 53/54 euros.

Senzadite

Ebay UK...check it.

RoRoSe

I tried this today .. I am sorry to tell that I am disappointed .. I expected more .. I expected a smoky raspberries & oud scent .. but unfortunately all I smell is dark vanilla & myrrh .. very normal & cheap .. you can smell it any where .. sorry !

Nataja

Better than any other smoky perfume, smells like cigars, sex,in a jazzy nightclub in Manhattan.Stays on his skin also hours later. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..

fire2heart

I can't wait to get my spray on with this perfume! It has the kind of notes I like that work well with my chemistry.

bettybooplennon

I want it, and i want it now!!!!

Hi, I'm new to the site! :)
Since Pink Sugar Sensual has been discontinued, I've switched over to BS Fantasy after reading here that they were very similar - thank you to members for those reviews! It's a close enough match for me to not be so heartbroken over losing PSS.
That said, I am really looking forward to trying this! The incense, vanilla, and leather sounds heavenly. Smoky-sweet and exotic, just in time for late fall and winter. Can't wait for the release!

hermyonee

does anyone know when will this one be available? can't find it anywhere for the moment, even in italy!

charlottesmom

Can't wait to try this one, I already love Pink Sugar, Gold Sugar and Simply Pink so I have high hopes. i really like the bottle, very pretty IMO. :0)

Our Sephora has stopped carrying pretty much all Aquolina perfumes, hope they have this one, but there is always Ulta, who carry all the new Aquolina perfumes (thank goodness!).

lauren.schwartz.902

When Will it be released

Sveltekittie

Notes sound very intriguing & great for autumn/winter. Looking forward to getting my paws on a tester of this one really soon!

violetrose

where can I get this in UK? The notes sounds sexy, most aquolina perfume got long, lasting power. Can't wait.

beauty_girl

Looks so cozy, classy and elegant in a way :) the bottle would match perfect on the perfume shalf. The notes sounds interesting so i think it would be good for winter and colder days.
Nice to see that Aquolina makes a more "grown up" scent, instead of the normally sweet perfumes. I like them, but it is fun to variate perfumes sometimes after category :)
