Eau du Soir by Sisley is a Chypre Floral fragrance for women. Eau du Soir was launched in 1990. Eau du Soir was created by Jeannine Mongin, Hubert d'Ornano and Isabelle d'Ornano. Top notes are Grapefruit and Mandarin Orange; middle notes are oak moss, Juniper, Patchouli, Pepper, Iris, Carnation, Syringa, Rose, French labdanum, Jasmine, Lily-of-the-Valley and Ylang-Ylang; base notes are Musk and Amber.

Eau du Soir is the second perfume by the house of Sisley and it is feminine, elegant and eternal. Its complex and rich composition is based on perfect harmony of contrasted lines: fresh citrus, sensual flowers, warm amber and musk. The bottle, with its golden stopper (made of 18 karat gold), was designed by Polish sculptor Bronisław Krzysztof. The top notes are mandarin orange, grapefruit, spruce and carnation. The heart consists of seringo, jasmine, rose and lily-of-the-valley. Musk, amber and patchouli are in the base. Countess Isabelle d’Ornano was given Eau de Soir as a gift by her husband, count Hubert d'Ornano in 1990. The count created a unique floral composition in the centre of which was Spanish flower seringa. Its fragrance, as in the case of many other types of white flowers, radiates an intense scent through night air and attracts night butterflies to pollinate it. The perfume was created to remind countess of her childhood in Spain. The name was chosen because of night flower seringe (in French, soir means evening). For several years Eau de Soir was countess' personal perfume and it was no sooner than 1999, after her friend persuaded her, that it was released for public.

This fragrance has a distinct dry quality to it. The notes of juniper, oak moss, and patchouli are undeniably prominent, evolving over time into a dusty, leathery aroma reminiscent of an old, well-loved leather couch. It brings to mind memories of my Slavic grandpa. Unlike the general consensus, I do think this scent is quite heavy rather than fresh; with a very musky and woody sillage.

Aeternitas

The very first spray of Eau du Soir is the equivalent to being hit over the head with a celery stalk.
The spruce and grapefruit are promptly introduced at first - they are VERY loud...
Crisp, strong, cool, and a bit prickly. A true, classic green chypre in all of its glory!
As far as the grapefruit and orange goes, this isn't just the sweet flesh of citrus fruits; the bitter rinds and leaves are most certainly included here, and the flowers are not without their green stems.
The underlying bouquet of garden florals are waiting to show themselves, and they do in time. Though it mellows out, don't expect the green-ness to diminish! This chypre is unashamed of its green quality...
Eau du Soir certainly would not be Eau du Soir if that weren't so!

This is definitely a springtime scent. It works beautifully with humidity! It's like dewdrops on a lush, green lawn and fresh-cut flowers in a crystal-clear vase. It seems some would disagree, but I actually do find this perfectly unisex.

I love Eau du Soir because it has connotations with my sophisticated grandmother. She's the one who gave me my miniature bottle of this. It's such a classic.
However, I have to be honest and say I don't care for green fragrances at all. I simply wear this when I'm feeling nostalgic or cheerfully bold. I admire the artistry and inspiration behind it, regardless of whether it fits my personal preferences or not.

I just love this … its just fresh and lovely

vintagejen

It's first thing on a Monday morning in March, sitting in the garden, the sky's bright and blue, theres a cool crisp breeze, birdsong all around, I'm surrounded by my dad's handiwork of daffodils, tulips and all sorts of greenery, savouring my final few sips of tea before I start work, and the gorgeous trail of Eau du Soir reaches my nose. I feel ready to face the day now!

rene.saller

Wow, Eau du soir is an extraordinary chypre: old money and ancient mosses; complex, spine-straightening spices over a bed of aromatic woods. Yet it's much more sensuous than a more herbaceous chypre like Aromatics Elixir; the jasmine here verges on the indolic, but not enough to reek. I love the combination of florals and spices--along with the labdanum and residual grapefruit from the opening, which lingers longer than most citrus notes do. I found out about this perfume from a friend, who found a vintage bottle that she had bought years ago, so I got curious and ordered a sample vial from Fragrance net (current formulation, of course). I'm not sure I have ever smelled syringa before, and I'm pretty sure I dig it. I know the oakmoss must be fake now, but whatever synthetic they're using here is very good. In the vintage the oakmoss note must be transcendent.

JetSnail22

It smells like old wardrobe to my bf, sorry. Me personally find it retro chic. Great for occasions you need to feel yourself serious person.

schadenfall

Smells like piles of heavy gold jewellery stacked on sweaty skin in a secret boudoir. Soapy, yes, but this is the kind of soap that would make you look forward to washing your hands, washing them until your skin burns. This perfume makes me feel like I have a very big inheritance to spend, love it!

Marrena

I just discovered this fragrance recently. I love it. I agree with the reviewers below. It is bitter. It is bracing. It is unapologetically oakmossy. It is NOT "evening water" it is Monday morning in a bottle. It is the intersection of Mary Poppins and Emma Peel. It is the Cake song, "Short Skirt/Long Jacket". All these notes could turn manly, into aftershave, but it is all that and remains feminine, nonetheless. The juniper/grapefruit/pepper/carnation/oakmoss is 100% no nonsense.

So, yeah, not a safe blind buy, but if you are the type of woman who identifies with all that, worth getting a sample and trying it out. You may fall in love.

Some perfumes are highly seasonal, IMO. Eau Du Soir is your favorite 3-ply cashmere turtleneck in a glorious liquid form. This is one we could all wax rhapsodic about, as it just polishes your wardrobe after you pack away your tee-shirts for the season. Understated yet illustrious glamour. It can sometimes feel hard to define, yet the classics endure like a string of pearls.

This is just "it". 8-D

Gorgeous chypre. So grown up and sophisticated. This fragrance comes on very strong, but calms down quickly. It is not a linear fragrance which I love. A little goes a long way. Not a safe blind buy.

WhiteFlowerPrincess

I remember back when I bought this perfume years ago, when I pretty much just bought perfumes if they had beautiful bottles and not so much for what they smelt like. I do love the golden color of the liquid inside the bottle and the cap that's a gold bust of a beautiful woman, but I realized 3 years ago that I don't really like the smell and so I decluttered it. I wanted to re-test it just so I could remember why I didn't like it and write this review you're about to read:

Eau de Soir by Sisley opens up very citrusy from the grapefruit and the mandarin orange and this bitter and sour vibe unfortunately lasts throughout my whole wear of this fragrance. The opening makes me think of toilet cleaner too.

I then get a blast of very bitter and earthy oakmoss in the heart notes that makes this fragrance smell very vintage and old fashioned to me and the juniper gives it this piney, green, foresty and woody smell that unfortunately makes Eau de Soir even stronger and more bitter. The patchouli then emphasizes this green and earthy quality even more and there is something about this that leans slightly more masculine than unisex almost to me. The carnation then adds to the spiciness and the labdanum even more to the earthiness of it all, meaning most of the other heart notes get smothered other than touches of a citrusy rose and even smaller touches of a powdery and dry as opposed to a fresh iris.

In the base of Eau de Soir it is all about the amber to me and I can't smell any of the musk, again making this fragrance even stronger and less sweet again. It all makes me think that this fragrance would be better suited to fall/winter during the evening at something serious like a gala or a business dinner. Definitely not anything fun, sexy, girly or flirtatious about it. More for a woman in a drab business suit and blocky heels and sporting an even drabber bob. Very mature smelling...

Sillage was of course enormous (meaning nuclear) and would choke out everyone until they left the room in droves. Its longevity was almost eternal too, at 16 and a half hours. Two sprays (or maybe even one) would be be enough for the whole day and also most of the night and you'd only apply more at your own risk.

I of course hated this fragrance and didn't think it was good at all, which is why I'm only giving it a 2/10. It mainly just gets any points at all for me because of its beautiful bottle and because of its amazing longevity only.

Eribert

This is a cold and brutal scent.
If it were just for that, I would probably like it more - also, because I really wanted to.
But it smells like an accomplished, strict lady (this one is not unisex, although the notes would make you think so) in her fifties or sixties. Knows what she wants, knows how to get it - all by herself!

While I think „Eau du Soir“ is a memorable fragrance, it is not for me. I want a little more gentleness. Also, I‘m not a lady…

Compositeur

Wrote a review some time ago, but thought it deserved a more positive one. My bottle has been sitting quietly for a year now (the bottle itself must be 4-5 years old). The juice has macerated even further, and it seems that now more notes are coming to the surface. I get the florals, I get the amber; so, now it feels a more well-rounded composition (a Chypre akin to a Patou one). Longevity is still around 6-7 hours, but now it seems to linger further as a skin scent.

Now, all this is well and good, but I am not suggesting we should buy bottles and let them sit for years. Is perfume becoming something like wine I wonder? I do think though that perfume companies should make it clear to their (long-suffering) customers when maturing the juice is preferable. Surely they must know this, it can't be just a coincidence.

Liz70

Absolute worst blind buy ever. Someone used the word "shrill" and I totally agree. Of course, I understand that perfume is completely personal and subjective. I probably wear things that others would wrinkle their noses at. If you love this one, and it works for you, great, but I truly cannot understand how people call this timeless, elegant, rich or polished. It is over-bright, VERY green, and strident. Certainly, I get no depth from this at all. I absolutely would never wear this to work or a meeting- it's antiseptic at best. As a 50-something professional woman, I have a huge collection of truly rich and expensive perfumes and this one isn't even worthy to sit on the lowest shelf. It reminds me of something you could buy for $20 at a drugstore. If anyone would like to buy my totally full 100ml bottle, PM me.

albarine

A charismatic and fresh , woody scent , which could be a mysterious and seductive unisex choice . It seems for me to be softer than Chanel 19 or Silence of Jacomo but in the same way.

sandrajj

My first bottle of Eau du Soir was bought back in 2013, and here it is 2023. So, I've worn it on and off over these years; one thing I could always count on when wearing it was I received so many positive compliments when I was close to someone. Usually, "Oh, you smell so good!" I know I loved the dry down so much, this lasted many hours on my skin. Unfortunately I went through chemotherapy and radiation for treatement of cancer two years ago, so I stopped wearing fragrance of any kind. I had lost my sense of smell. Now, I've realized I can once again enjoy wearing perfumes! My bottle of Eau du Soir was almost empty so I ordered it online, the parfum spray. This 2023 version is not at all like the 2013 version I once owned. It has more floral (almost akin to Estee Lauder's Knowing), is lacking the sharp, almost bitter vibe I had loved. I know it's not that my 'smeller' isn't working correctly since chemotherapy since I used up the 2013 well after my treatments ended - so I know how I expected this to smell. I am so disappointed! Has anyone else noticed that this perfume is totally reformulated now?

syracusa

A disappointment. Shrill, uptight, sterile, career woman wanna-be. Also no lasting power, no mystery, just someone who takes themselves seriously but without any depth. That's what happens when you spend money based on other people's stories. It was a blind buy, I never liked it, now I struggle to finish the bottle.

prancingponytail

This is the scent of a C-Suite woman who inherited tons of money, but she isn't a show-off, doesn't get tipsy, always calm and collected but in an easy-going manner. She knows her job really well, hardworking, has the best taste in clothes and design. She doesn't care if her hair's gone grey, doesn't do much of a make-up, was never seen in a gym or even sweating but somehow she always has the brightest skin and the healthiest body.

Perfumelover15

Strong, Regal perfume bringing the image of elegant, vintage femininity. Though the new edition after certain reformulation through the years is not as creamy and round as it was in the 90s. Now is more loud and more synthetic. Good that it is still in production because these rich, strong and so 80s fragrances like Paloma Picasso, Knowing, Coriandre, Jean Louis Scherrer etc. are hard to find. The classic Coco Chanel and some of the Chanel Les Exclusifs would give you this feel and are still good quality.

GirlOnFire

I’ve had Eau de Soir for over 10 years now and I love this because it’s really one of those no-nonsense, old money, powerful woman perfumes that would be worn in the 90s. It demands respect. You could kind of say Hermès 24 Faubourg is similar in that spirit.

mystica

Eau du Soir, however much a reformulation, was my birthday gift to myself for the special, I deem a cornerstone age of 30. It lasted for years and I finished it nowadays.

I had totally fallen in love with the intact version in my 20s. I could swear it was how a queen would smell like... The currently available version is fresh and unisex leaning a bit towards the aftershave band. But it is still a good, clean, refreshing fragrance. I don't get the "old" connotation, it is rather super elegant. I have never played golf, but if I did, I would probably wear this for the game, and then we would spend the night in a 5 stars resort, enjoying caviar and champagne, the latter of which I like.

It is also an ideal business fragrance. The only ever person I've smelt this on outside was a bank manager lady in her early 40s.

You don't wanna mess with anyone wearing Eau du Soir I guess. Not because it is offensive or threatening but it really conveys the message that "I don't have time for BS". I like it, lol.

Random Spirit Lover

Sisley are so underrated as a perfume brand… they are simply masters of this sort of unisex, pastoral, chic fragrance that exudes understated luxury. Basically, they all are aspirational fragrances… conjuring images of old-money elites with impeccable taste and of rambling European countryside estates with magical, perfectly manicured courtyards and gardens. They seem minimalistic, sheer, and easy-going, and will appeal to those who like such fragrances, but are actually quite full and rich and complex. I generally find their performance to be quite good as well, better than most other brands on my skin anyway, and even the EdT ones last 8+ hours for me, but i intentionally overspray to get that longevity.
Yes, many of their fragrances seem similar to me… there are varying degrees of overlap between this, the other Soirs, the eau de sisley line, several of the new Revee line, and even the classic eau de campagne… they basically all form one big Venn diagram where moss is the common denominator. But as a result they also have a very cohesive line of fragrances and a distinct style that they stick to, which happens to be a scent profile I love.
I realize this is more a review of the Sisley line in general, but it seemed appropriate because I find this fragrance to be most indicative of the Sisley style, kind of a summation of the house and what they are about.

Sexy sophisticated professional show stopping incredible gorgeous opulent regal

scenturian

Such a gothic masterpiece.
Black jewel.

Very sharp, metallic, cold, smoky, bitter and dry, no sweetness at all. Don't let overloaded floral notes fool you, here nothing like sweet girlie floral, this one is smoky bitter chypre.

The Name perfectly fits its character.

Unisex.

Fick von Nacht und Tag

Luxurious, unisex, aromatic and soapy. There's something very Edwardian. Old world, old money, summer afternoons and tailored linen suits. And at the same time like a hot skin in the middle of a hayfield. Sexy clean with a slightly arousing dirty touch.
Like a combination of Paco Rabanne Pour Homme and Kiehl's Original Musk. But much better and refined. Love it.

dexilio

Clean, soapy and musky. This is versatile and sophisticated. Remind me of Kiehl's Original Musk but minus the animalic note and tone down the floral note. Definitely a unisex and timeless creation.

Parfumadict.

If this fragrance is targeted as "For Woman"... then that woman has to be a very masculine looking one.
I'll get this for myself... I don't think anyone will approach me saying I smell like a woman.

Sassafras23

Opens up harshly masculine, with a sour blast familiar from old-school generic aftershaves. I could have sworn it was aldehydes and carnation. But no, that’s supposedly citrus. The mandarin orange gives distinct sweetness to other fragrances, but it’s nowhere to be felt here. It does not resemble grapefruit either. The eau softens afterwards to flat fresh-spicy-aromatic. What does it remind me of? Paco Rabanne Pour Homme? It’s beyond me why it should be marketed as feminine. Not worth the hefty price tag either. No one will think you are “regal”, wearing this.

anna-fie

Could easily be a unisex scent.
Very soapy and clean.
Wearing the bodylotion and just a little spray perfume in my hair.

dogmeat

I don't know why this is called Eau du Soir...at first spray, this makes me think of sunshine and flowers. It's so bright, clean, and green to my nose. It's heating up here in Southern California and I'm going to be wearing the hell out of this. In its initial phase, I think this smells almost cologne-like it is so fresh. And while that freshness does wane in the drydown, it remains light and invigorating on my skin...just a little more earthy and mossy. I see some of the other fragrances in the 'reminds me of' section: Paloma Picasso, Aromatics Elixir, 1881. Eau du Soir might be in the same vein, but it's more like the happy-go-lucky cousin to those scents. I love this stuff.

correspondencepersonal

This is exquisite! I love the way that this perfume smells - and it definitely leans towards a perfume that smells like a Fortune 500 CEO could wear this. This is a confidence builder type perfume. Men could also wear this because this is not overtly feminine with a strong floral or sweet note. This is more in the alto range of perfume smells. This smells successful. This may be a bit over powering right after it is sprayed, but the dry down of this perfume is really fabulous. This is in the same range with perfumes like Knowing and Youth Dew by Estee Lauder and Coco Chanel (the original).

This is one of those perfumes which I have not purchased yet.
This perfume is a little bit more mature - and definitely sends off that vibe.
This perfume is something that a Queen could wear... but may be too over powering to wear daily.
I would wear this one for special occasions and meetings... this is a bit too formal to wear every day.

April6678

This is my favorite perfume. To me it smells like someone coming down the red carpet . Beautiful but sophisticated

Uio91

This smells like an expensive soap or pricey bathroom handwash. It reminds me of Chanel 5, it’s the same vibe but with way a bigger soapy feel. Not particularly fan given it would suit a more mature person. It would make a perfect as a gift to a grandmother or an aged neighbor/colleague.

eduardo_garibalde

mirrorghost

i get oakmoss and juniper with rose and pepper. kind of surprised rose is voted so low because i get a fair amount. this dries down to a peppery oakmoss musk. definitely vintage smelling and i think this is a well balanced oakmoss perfume. sometimes they go too heavy on one element or the other but not here.

Glyph

I actually love this: it's a gorgeous old-school green/floral chypre that's dark enough it could be worn by men as well as women. The oakmoss is still quite present in it and makes the whole thing seem very rich and decadent, and the nice juniper at the heart of it keeps it from being too floral. I really find this enjoyable.

The manufacturer's backstory for this being presented as a gift to a countess by her husband to make her think of butterflies gathering in the syringas in their twilight garden is so twee (even if it's true!) that it's quite off-putting. But the actual fragrance itself is much, much better than that.

lemmenkukka

I do love this one deeply. Maybe this is old school like Aromatics Elixir on Knowing, but still, this is a masterpiece and a classic. A keeper for me.

Enrium

It is rare that I find myself disagreeing with Luca Turin, but Eau du Soir is much better than his scathing one star review suggests. Perfumes: The Guide was where I started my education on all things perfume as a young teenager, and boy, did I take it seriously. As a result, I didn't deign to smell EDS until I au paired in France during college. The mother had a fine perfume collection in both bathrooms, with which I familiarised myself. I was drawn to the EDS bottle initially, thanks to its MDCI-like gold bust as lid. The liquid inside smelled of an old-world, classic chypre - mossy and dusty. Vintage-style in the best way, it is deeply elegant and sophisticated. A little bit Paloma, a little bit Knowing, it is familiar territory, but is no less beautiful for that. I recently bought a vintage miniature from the noughties and it smells as good as I remember.

EDS has a bright, fruity opening thanks to the citrus notes. Big, powdery florals emerge early on, led by rose and rounded out by clean jasmine and some sweet white ylang ylang. Iris enhances the powder, while carnation adds a clove-like nuance. The chypre accord emerges early, following the florals closely. It is very mossy and earthy, with patchouli complementing the liberally used, vintage-style oakmoss to perfection.

Lily-of-the-valley emerges after the louder florals subside, green and soapy, giving EDS a little lift. A nice woody-amber accord emerges at the drydown stage, grounding this scent and tying it all together. It becomes slightly animalic and musky, with remnants of the powdery florals remaining as it fades. Sillage is strong and longevity is long-lasting.

Classic vintage elegance in a bottle, EDS is extremely well-blended and beautifully composed. Best worn during autumnal days and nights (chypres smell like autumn to me). Mature, feminine sophistication that would also work well on a man today. 4.5/5.

spiegelsaal

i appreciate and think very highly of luca turin but this is so *not* a cheap chypre. it's elegant, sure-footed, a little bit soft yet also a little bit icy and bitter. its vibe is like making your way through the black forest, and finding in the middle of a clearing not a witch's gingerbread house or a spellbound castle, but a mies van der rohe building. contrary to its marketing and a lot of reviews online, i don't find it particularly feminine nor suitable only for nighttime and/or cooler days -- it's quite unisex, and good for summer days as there is nothing here that's warm and overly cosy which can be nausea-inducing in the humid heat.

ad4

I'm using Sisley's Soir de Lune for couple years and I considered it my signature scent but this one is even better (even it's very similar) and it's something I was looking for about 8 years. For me it's only winter perfume, I don't feel it's matching any other weather than cold. It's instant good mood for me. It may sound weird but after Oriflame's Saga was discontinued I was trying to find something similar and Eau du Soir is exactly it. It's definitely not for everybody, not a safe blind buy and for someone it's not for everyday use but I feel I can handle it. Someone would say it's for older mature women but I feel like myself with this perfume and I'm still under 30. There's something masculine in this perfume which is perfect for me.

SzyprowaWiedźma

If you think it is bitter and old, just wait a decade, please;)
This is stunning chypre that is thrurly regal and very brilliant...

For those who loves white sugar it is just anti mosquito spray...
Perhaps it is good that it is not for everyone.

ajraccounts

Sharp is the word that comes to my mind with this fragrance, in the best way. Sharpness of mind, sharpness of spirit. Spicy citrus; cool, verdant herbs; contrasted with a deep, warm base of moss and patchouli that has a hint of sweet amber for balance; all laced through touch of indolic florals that lends it a fragrant richness. Fierce elegance with an edge, encapsulated in a bottle.

Dandyman

I am sorry to say, you absolutely must find a vintage of this, if you want it. The new bottles are watered down.

I think Jean-Louis Scherrer vintage is a much better alternative, if you only can find new bottles of Eau du Soir Sisley.

This WAS fantastic.

A good advice is to check out vintage chypres made by Bernard Chant. Pick any of them - and you are secured with great chypre perfume.

Eau du Soir Sisley current formula breaks my heart.

It smells like yacht money daahhling.

I met Sisley's Eau du Soir by chance in a perfumery in Bologna 23 years ago to be exact, in those days I was a lover of Sisley's Transmat Crème de Maquillage au Concombre foundation, an absolute must (at a crazy price). The shop assistant gave me this very pretty mignon by Eau du Soir, at the time I was a fond admirer of floral designs, I was wearing So Pretty by Cartier… light years away. It wasn't love at first sight… I found it incredibly bold, almost masculine and dizzying. I was not well educated on that blend. I kept it there among the perfumes, I observed it with suspicion, sometimes furtively took a drop on my wrist and when dry I perceived this imposing chypre / woody that disturbed me. Over time I have learned to break stereotyped barriers and sexualise fragrances. It was a huge discovery, like going into a wood and grasping all its most contrasting chords, a supreme and masterful concert of citrus and then woody, spicy and earthy chords with an almost submerged floral heart, framed by an adorable amber background. We are talking about a sumptuous creation by Jeannine Mongin, Hubert d'Ornano and Isabelle d'Ornano, prestigious alchemists of phytocosmetics. Impacting sillage, duration worthy of its history. Today I love him madly

BoryanaB

I'm shocked
Have all people here that sware by it tried this perfume? Or maybe I got the wrong bottle. To me there are no flowers, nothing. To be honest I smell one of those gels which you put when you feel muscle pain - something like suffocating menthol/eucalyptus. The worst blind purchase I've ever made.

auroramaria

An absolute classic, sophisticated and rich smelling. Totally unisex people compliment me when I wear it,but I only use it in cool weather. Pure class and unique

Chanel de Lanvin

It's a perfume that I wear without any problem being a man, as clichés die hard.
It is fresh airy, flowery and gives a classy perfume note to the people who wear it.
A timeless classic.

Salma Hayek’s daughter wears this perfume

Compositeur

A 'green' Chypre, which is elegant, but rather timid. Longevity is about 6 hours and sillage is intimate.
Much better Chypres out there.

PerfumedParrot

I finally sprayed this as my boyfriend kept saying he liked it (on whom I wonder!) and it’s fine but that’s it. It’s a sparkling, clean aldehyde, chypre with a slight vintage feel. He can stick to smelling this on all of his other unremarkable (slightly mature) smelling woman.

Sweep13

Had this perfume years ago. I loved it so much. It definitely packs a punch. It smells very expensive. This is not a young girls perfume. I still think it’s a very elegant scent, but nowadays I prefer less projection.

norm_konkle

I really wanted to like it., but my skin has a tendency to harshen any woody accords and makes it smell cologne-y (not in a good way at least) on me. It's complex scent with extreme longevity. I just don't have the skin chemistry to pull it off.

Advaitaforever

Juniper and bergamot in the opening, fresh and Mediterranean, there is an array of herbaceous, warm accords and a peppery kick.
This is a proud, assertive and decisive brunette with not a whisper of a juvenile girl. Stoic, regal, mature and a little scary. She communicates without words, the expression is clear from her eyes alone. The Oakmoss is the star, unabashedly framed in a classic patchouli and delicate, sun drenched white flowers while a sharp lemony citrus pierces through the scent profile. It’s interesting that this is compared to Jean Louis Scherrer which I find to be far more austere and cold, a Parisian, early spring morning with a strong intention…. Whereas eau de soir is a luxurious, relaxed summer evening in a heavenly Spanish garden as the fragrance radiates warmth and a solar quality. They are neighbours but certainly not the same.

Fragaddict123

The perfect floral chypre doesn’t exis…..
“Smells this fragrance”
It does exist holy cow where have I been living in a cave ??

LanaDelSlay

My mom wore this perfume when I was a kid. She would always wear it for the evening, so now it's a memory for me, I wanna purchase it just for this. But it's a very mature scent, and yes very suitable for evenings, for events like weddings, dinners. It smells like a fancy old woman, who's classy, powerful and not to be fucked with. There's a darkness to it for me, it has no sweetness, no fruitiness, it's flowers but dark version, mature version. It's serious, it's what I would picture a first lady wear for an important evening.

Alex1984

Class! It’s the word that best fits Eau du Soir, along with elegance.
Moss bomb, at least in older formulations, EdS has retained most of its beauty but the golden thread of age erasing shows. In a nutshell, I would go with any bottle prior to 2012.

Comparison between various vintages.
1990 black atomizer, the original black bottle.
This is the most glorious version of it! Obviously, and just newly launched, this is oakmoss galore.
Rich rose and jasmine heart, a beguiling verdancy with probably more than a little galbanum, the honeyed warmth of syringa (just like in Knowing with pitosporum), and the razor sharp bitterness of juniper. Shaving foam associations welcome. The drydown is dark moss, vetiver and sandalwood that give the ‘Soir’ its meaning! Sillage and longevity is astounding here.

2002 round purse spray, refillable.
This was, supposedly, the first limited edition (2001) before the colored bottles but I’ve no proof of that. The smell is practically the same but there is diminished potency. It behaves like an edt version. Notes seem sharper but overall I still very much like it. The brightness and regal elegance that screams when it hits your skin is unmistakable. I’d love it more had it the potency of prior versions.

2004/2006 limited edition colored bottles.
Here is where Sisley started tweaking almost yearly with the formula, as if to find a way to fit into IFRA and the scent. Various bottles, some with oakmoss, some with treemoss, some with both or without any, feel and smell dissonant. EdS is there but it smells like a non finished version. It’s shrill, sharp, the floral heart smells poor and it’s only saved by its characteristic juniper tang. Oakmoss varies from year to year.

2008/2011 limited edition colored bottles.
Here, Sisley seems to have found a balance. It overall smells better than years before and the sillage and potency have returned. There’s more honeyed floral-ness than before, the galbanum seems absent, but the drydown brings back the signature darkness from early bottles. It’s dry but creamy, warm but still reeking of that signature opening that channels through the entire fragrance evolution. It smells complete and it’s my favorite formula after the black atomizers.

2012 onwards.
And here, it’s downhill until today. With stricter restrictions in place, Eau du Soir still retains its character but it feels alien. Sharper than ever, there’s no emotion. The flowers smell wilted, the base feels like a simple white wash of musk and there’s nothing to anchor it on skin. Just like post 2016 Aromatics, both of which are highly recognizable, individual and stern, the warmth and heart are gone. Both, easily converted into signature perfumes for dynamic personalities and never forgotten, with a loyal following, remain so because of the loyalty of their followers. Smell it today and it’s a million times better than the rest of the perfume counter. Smell it for the first time and they’re stunning powerhouses among a sea of nothingness. But smell them after years of knowing them and you’ll sense the change.
I’m not gonna lie, I have a 2009 turquoise/coral bottle and two 1990 black ones and I’m perfectly happy. Had I not had the opportunity to get them I would still buy the current, because even if it’s tummy tucked and lifted, it still has class, elegance, and smells infinitely better than the rest of the perfumes in a department store. And whatever reformulations, I’m positive they were made the best they could. It’s a shame that the norm is to disfigure a perfume to its very bones..
Long live Eau du Soir.

LOST_HORIZON

If you have ever met a Forest Fairy, surely she used Eau du Soir. Why? because this fragrance smells like a humid and mysterious forest, it smells like streams and intricate lianas. It smells of the magic that is in the trees and of the green potions that the gnomes and the elves produce for long life...

clebermaximo

My description of it would be class in a bottle. This is one of the best chipres I have ever worn. It is not too woody, not too mossy, not too flowery... There is a right balance among all the notes here, in a way that I cannot recognize them separated at the first spray.
I used to say It has a "grand lady wardrobe vibe" not in a bad way... I mean a wardrobe full of Haute Couture and the smell of the wood furniture mixing with the soft smell of silk, wool even mixing with a leather trench coat.
It has that rich, classy and elegant smell. Some people may consider it vintage - it really goes the Animale, Paloma Picasso path, although I feel those two sweeter - but it is not dated at the same time.

corgi02

This makes me think of how Downton Abbey would smell. It's too mature for me and I'm in my 50s : )
It's just not me but it does not offend. It says a lot that it wouldn't bother me to wear it I just have too many others I prefer. It smells very serious and old school. It's dry green and spice I could see why someone would have it as a signature. But not me. I also think it leans a tad masculine but not so much a guy should wear it. If you like this you might like Apercu and Indian Summer by Houbigant both discontinued btw they are less green. Update an hour later: drydown smells like the above which are the same as Madame Rochas. yuck. Downton would not smell like this no way. I couldn't get it to scrub off. Headache inducing stench. I've worn Knowing and Aire Loewe and Polo Sport Women RL for 20 to 25 years to give you an idea.

ingeneuxo

-Vintage-smelling chypre scent that packs a punch of spice.
-Shares a similar vibe to the older Guerlains, such as L'heure Bleue.
-Dry woody scent that leans masculine. (-)

alphairone

Eau de Soir is a classical floral chypre that dials up oakmoss, herbs and juniper, shading the florals in verdant, dusty hues, with patchouli as the keystone. The patchouli in fact merges it all into a cohesive, discrete monolith of beauty, without it spiking outward and asserting itself.

While it lays on heavy in the opening (no complaint here), it does smooth out into elegant ripples, while still retaining this opulent, rich cloud for some time. Also for my fragrance enthusiasts who love to take the bitter with (or without) the sweet, there is this delicious sappy greenness in the heart, almost coniferous, as if the juniper is actually accompanied by spruce needles and resin. Combined with the jasmine and lily of the valley, we really reach a zenith of aromatic rapture before it settles into a sudsy, mossy base where the patchouli actually begins to open up to reveal its earthy character hours later.

Speaking of "aromatic", think of this a cousin to Aromatics Elixir, however while Elixir is dense and bewitching, Eau de Soir is more an extroverted showboat of luxuriance. Those who love Lauder for Men will also find Eau de Soir to be quite appealing (both share juniper berries, lily of the valley, jasmine, and bitter green notes) but not redundant. Each is colored with different tints and shades to elicit somewhat different responses from the olfactory receptors. In my humble opinion, all three belong in any die hard's collection.

Also, Luca Turin trashed it as a "cheap chypre," and while he and I agree at times, each time he trashes a scent, it's one for which I become absolutely smitten (see also Jean Couturier Coriandre, he eviscerates that one).

Cortina1981

Finnaly got my nose on the perfume, today…this immediately striked me to the refined, sophiaticated lady from the 80’!Immediately.I was transported. And something very very familiar, smelled decades ago.Yes,it’s chypre, but so familiar, and feminine. And reminded me very much to Aromatics elixir.Don’t know if i’d wear it,but not because it’s not good,it’s great, but associates me too much of a femininity of the not 1990,but before. It is quissential 80’ decadent,Parisian,I see some famous French actress wear this in the beautiful mid 80’…what a scene, and what a great decade.

SISLEYS EAU DU SOIR
thirty years ago a legend was born. (1990) I immediately noticed. I can clearly remember the first sniff I took and the cellular response of my olphactory perceptors. I almost couldn't believe such sophistication, demureness and yet presentism at once. I HAD to have the 100ml./3.4oz flacon despite the (then also) hefty price. and what chic bottle. the sheer force of this perfume is its 'unforce' and at the same time, demanding presence. this is a pivotal definition of chicness, difference, lovely and aloof barrier against the grit of the times. it has a reminiscence with Knowing and Chanel No. 19. it has a coldness, then also a spicey invasive character. it is the oakmoss I think, that lasts through and through (Ivoire, Knowing, Pheromone) that gives the perfume a backbone and lends the rose, iris, carnation, ylang, seringa, jasmine, labdanum, and lily.o.t.v. a direction without ever misting up their rich heritage. probably the labdanum gives this perfume its mysterious, narcotic character. it seems a well blended perfume in that it is difficult to discern the separate notes. the perfume has such majestic entrée that it stands as a beakon for how intruigueing perfumery can be. this is definitely such sophisticated perfume, that if you want to embody being a Madison ave, av. Montaigne, Bond Street, Roppongi Hills, type of lady, here is your chance to at least have a go with it. the attachment of the perfume is such, that if once sprayed on, there is no way back. it keeps sending wafts of delicate and pompous perfumial annexionisms above and around. this is the heritage of the 80s hookers Poison, Giorgio, Obsession. and I love them all. but we need Chanel, Dior, Dusita, Givenchy, Sisley, Gale and Fred Hayman, Estée Lauder and YSL (with whose 'Y' it also bears a tight connection) to up it all up. while the 'Eau du Soir' have its ancestry and heriditary sillage (Izia - Izia Noir - Soir de Lune [in particular] - Soir d'Orient) it is the proud statue of hyperchicness in its own. juniper, patchouli and pepper give it again some more 'sinistre'; amber and musk and the fruity opening complexisize it even more, which is to say: make it more mystique. this is Eau du Soir. unique end sensitive.

jellybeantree

My friend at the local perfume shop gave me an idea to mix Sisley Eau du soir, which I own and love with Bergamote Calabria. It really gives Eau du soir a kick of freshness which I really enjoy. It feels like I have made my own personal fragrance. I really recommend trying it.

La_andrea

I fell in love when I discovered it. It is so clean as the fresh shower but at the same time as dirty as the best sex. It is feminine and classy, not cheap and you can smell it!

Stillmagnolia

This, THIS is why you do all that frog-kissing!!!!!

And I’ve met plenty of frogs I enjoy quite well. But this one is the one that turns out to be royalty.

TJQ

This is one of my all time favorites. It's so unique and so beautiful. In my nose-perience. This is a fragrance that perfectly showcased all the different elements in harmony. Perfection.

Fox NZ

This is a very elegant and classy scent, one of those reminding me of the aromas floating around my mum's vanity when I was a kid. This doesn't sound outdated or "old", it is a beautiful chypre complimenting its wearer. The other one from the line, Eau du Soir de Lune "sounds" somewhat similar, but Eau du Soir is definitely on a "colder' side, more "distant" and gentle

joyjoy

Wow, this really is a pale shadow of its former self. I just received a travel spray with my Sisley order and of course I knew it would smell different (I haven’t worn it in years) but this just makes me sad. It still smells good but it’s so not the same. I will say it’s an easier fragrance to wear now as the original was such a strong statement & a little haughty imo. The magic is gone.

Bouquet Bleu

Beautiful, aromatic, green, balsamic but woody and even smokey. To bitter for me though. I cannot pull it off, it is like the older sister/mother of Soir de Lune.

fleader

I wish Sisley would make a lighter eau de toilette flanker of this because it’s gorgeous but so strong that I can’t find many occasions to wear it. I also feel a bit like an impostor wearing it because it’s so swanky and elegant…

This is a scent for me that holds an endless fascination, it smells so fresh yet grounded. Other than the star oak moss the note that jumps out at me is carnation, which just shines

diego.lesgart

The rich cousin of the nightly winter fagances as Montana, Coco classic, Armani 82, Paloma Picasso, Knowing among others 70s and 80s masterpieces. Intoxicant as an expensive licquor, dark as the blackest winter night.

hilda2l

Clinique's Aromatic Elixir comes to mind at first whiff. Eau du Soir is the brighter, less austere younger sister.

Manya3

What I get on the blotter is rich, fruity, with a soft powdery oakmoss, some rich ylang-ylang with peppery carnations and fresh jasmine. On my skin it's bitter, then aldehydic, almost soapy. I have older relatives who wear it and it's beautiful
on them : I don't mind it on others but this is so not me. Nothing to do with age, more with personality type- I think you have to have a bit of a "the hell with it all" attitude and maybe even stubbornness to wear this kind of fragrance.
I don't get any flowers on me, just green bitter powder. I understand the artistic value of this composition which apparently stayed very similar to the original version, but it just clashes with my skin chemistry and go-with-the-flow personality.

Liz-frag

I feel like this perfume is for a woman who has her life put together, and I have not. :(
I hope one day I’ll have my life put together enough for my skin to match with this prettyness.

thenightintokyo

That was the smell of my dear aunt Helena, an extremely well-groomed, polished and chic lady. She spoke several languages, traveled all over the world and was a very interesting person to talk to. When she had Alzheimer's and passed away, I was in charge of disposing of her house and all her belongings. Eau du Soir was impregnated in her clothes and objects and made me think about the incredible life she had. After a while I bought myself a bottle and whenever I wear it I feel like I have captured some of her elegant and polite aura.
Eau du Soir is a timeless fragrance for a woman who has a history.

moderndandy_swap

Ooooh, this is really good, something that I was looking for! Reminds me Paloma Picasso and Chanel Antaeus, but it feels much more 'modern' somehow, and high quality.

rosevetiver

I like this scent immediately and I have only a slight allergic reaction to it -a tickling of the nose which is pleasant. The opening has so many notes that I can't seperate them. I get a green pine forest scent, a fresh green air of night, there is an effervescent soapy clean scent, mossy, and earthy rich soil depth. It's lovely. It's a walk through the woods at night. How can it smell like night and darkness and less ambient noise?

I enjoyed the opening so much that the dry down felt too soon, 30-40 minutes in, and is subdued, more citrusy, very earthy, warm and powdery. As it dries down I can't smell it on my wrists, it becomes completely a sillage scent.

Walking in a wooded area (in real life) I began feeling very open and gentle, tender, then weak in the knees, it felt as if I was in love! That is such a surprise. How can a fragrance effect my emotions this way? This is too personal and intimate of a story to sell to the world.

Eventually over 12 hours later all I get is a lovely rose scented sillage, again nothing on my wrists, all of the scent is in the sillage. The next day I haven't washed it off and for a while the scent went a little sour, then deep, really deep, and I felt so weepy. That sense that life is so temporary and therefore precious. This moment is beautiful but life is full of loss too. I had no idea a fragrance could take me on such an amazing journey.

Worn on the spring equinox, and the day after, it reminds me of the painting Primavera by Botticelli. Its feminine and tender; its stupendous. 10/10 (bottle from fragrance net)

colorfulmess

I really want to love this. From a distance it smells really crisp and fresh, with white florals peeking through soapy oakmoss, but with nose to skin I get a repugnant rotting vegetal smell. Or is it rancid pepper. This must be a skin chemistry error because no one else mentions it.

Smells very close to Acqua di Parma Essenza de Colonia.

UPDATE: so I found out my bottle had leaked in shipping and it made the perfume turn. That's why I was getting a rotting smell (it truly was foul). After testing a replacement, it is a 100% love and is exactly what I was hoping for. :)

kylexora

Classic, yet timeless. One whiff, I can tell this is from 90s era. Ironically, I found my self very much fond of perfume from 90s. I'm not sure if Eau du Soir is a masterpiece as I found it could be combination of Shalimar and Coco. Somehow, I found it also resemble Terre d'Hermes. I put 3 spray on myself and the perfume last up to 6 hours. Moderate projection but low sillage. I like it anyway, perfect for day if I don't overspray it. Somehow, I think it better be wear with formal outfit. Definitely not a holiday friendly perfume. Try before buy, and remember, less is more.

Anabol2336

This is basically Grace Kelly in a bottle. You immediately smell the French Riviera and all of its exotic florals. Especially night blooming flowers like the Syringa. This is one of the most regal perfumes I've ever smelled. For some reason I have never reviewed it after all these years of my wife wearing it until now. When she puts on her Sable this is the perfume that accompanies it every single time, because it smells rich and glamorous enough to go with an expensive fur like that. I don't find it to be an old lady scent at all. It just smells of wealth and old money.

mystica

Reformulation is just a pale copy of the original. I am not sure if it worths the price, but it's still different than many mainstream fragrances and still reminds me of the rich friends of my grandmother... I am proud to have such terrific taste at a young age!

Freedom#1

Smells like a MATURE lady. Lol I’m ok with it

ELB78

I have a travel size of this and the more I wear it the more I love it. It’s woody, mossy, and I think the juniper and carnation give it a spicy freshness. It takes me back to being young and walking through the woods in Oregon. Fresh cut trees, plants, and dew in the air.

jellybeantree

This is just so effortless and classic. I personally love it. It is elegant, clean, long lasting and regal. I honestly don’t think I’m elegant or regal but I love more woody fragrances. It’s for a woman that knows herself and has lived and has experience in life.

Mystery Elixir

This one isn't for me. Got it as a sample when I purchased another perfume but am definitely not in the market for a full sized bottle.
Whilst I usually like fragrances with woody notes, this wasn't the case this time. The woody accords combined with the moss for some reason called up memories of the mouldy cellar in my parents house and once I had made that association, the underlying 'dankness' of eau du soir was too overpowering for me. The drydown became a bit more musky and bearable for me though.
I definitely agree with other reviewers here that this one does have a very vintage and classic scent and appeal to it but it's simply not for me, my skin and my nose.

perfumeholic88

Autumn is wearing a khaki coat, black leather boots, gloves and a hat, and it smells like Eau de Soir, which is vintage chypre and I have to emphasize here that this smell is really vintage, so if someone does not like it (I will raise hand now), won´t like Eau de Soir and i totally understand it which does not mean that this perfume is ugly or badly made, nothing like that! We just don't fit together. It is greyish green, dark blue, very green, slightly patchouli with the addition of ylang and carnation flowers. This woody, earthy mixture reminds me of Joan Collins with her elegance and classy lookness. It is a strong specific scent, you need a strong character to wear it and even more tolerance for chypres to carry it on which I don´t gave. I fell off. It's not a perfume for me. Maybe in 40 years our roads will cross again and I will appreciate it more? Who knows?

KingRidesBy96

While I don't exactly know the reference Bluebirdpsyche makes (e.g., Eärendil), the sentiment is exactly right to me and I can't unthink the image.

A white elven light. I understand how this is a chypre and is consanguineous or in the spirit-family with green women's chypres but I don't get any of the leatheriness or sourness, pithiness, or even greenness here. It's somehow a prismatic white light made of needles, moss, citrus rinds, and fresh cold air. I also understand how on a bad day it could be felt as "soapy" or "laundry fresh" because it is so radiantly... clean. But 95% of the time it's an extremely fresh, bracing coniferous smell.

For the record I don't make the Scherrer connection. I'm pretty familiar with that one, but it is leathery and sour and smells like Aramis900 and Devin (or Aromatics Elixir and Aliage) taking the roll down the hill that Cary Elwes and Robin Wright take in The Princess Bride, landing out of the pastoral green into that place with the giant rats.

This is a pitch white chypre to me, piercingly crisp.

zimmer73

I have had a bottle of this for quite some time now. Love the drydown, but find the opening to streng, maybe it's the labdanum.
Anyway, today I layered it with Confetto from Profumum Roma, and it turned out beautifully. The sweetness from Confetto tamed the strong notes, and I am sooooo happy with my new creation...

Chanel de Lanvin

Eau du Soir is one of my classics, it can be worn in all seasons and perfectly unisex.
A must to have in its collection, one of the few mainstream perfumes to have my enthusiasm.

deborah.rouse.54

This is truly beautiful. I blind bought this a few days ago because I had been curious about it for years. Reviews were generally positive and I absolutely love this bottle. It is fresh, with a quick bite of sweetness, floral and even a tad watery/aquatic. I kept reading that it smelled like a forest or a Christmas tree, so I wasn’t sure what I’d end up with, but to me it is nothing like that; just fresh, a smidgen spicy, elegant, and beautiful. I love this and am so happy to have it my collection. If interested, please visit me for unique perfume finds/reviews on YouTube at Deborah Day. xo

gtabasso

a soapy masculine-leaning fragrance with juniper, ylang, rose and musk; I dislike oakmoss and just don't see it in this fragrance. Juniper and the florals dominate.

monikaasiya

Eau du Soir was my signature scent for many years now and it will probably always be.
I wrote many reviews about other gorgeous scents..describing them as luxurious, classy, for powerful women, etc...

but Eau du Soir is the Queen of all of this.
It is the most amazing scent I've ever smelled.
It is flawless, perfect, a masterpiece.

It does something to my self-confidence when I wear it. I feel like a "power- woman" and I've noticed I get the same feedback from people around me.

It is amazing after a shower, uplifting when I start my day.
Great for the office or a business dinner, for a night out in a good company and for cudling me to sleep.
Amazing for every season of the year.

It is just so perfect!

It gives me so much confidence, it makes me feel amazing.

My husband doesn't like it, but since it makes me so confident about myself ...I don't care (ha! ha! ha!)

not for the young audience though.
More for "trained noses" of the connoisseurs.

bintTapputi

I think this is a very beautiful cold month fragrance. Has a lovely, classical dry down. Very 'proper' and lady-like, this reminds me of a well composed, mature and well off woman who is in no doubt about who she is. Really lovely, beautiful bottle. 7.5/10

Not a Perfume Collector

The reformulation smells like a really nice pine-scented Christmas season luxury soap (that you can get for less money than this very expensive perfume) . They must have taken out all the oakmoss.

Bluebirdpsyche

This is the Light of Eärendil. This is magic and crystals in a bottle. This is Galadriel from “Lord of the Rings”. Lady of the Wood. Lady of the Light. A Queen, beautiful and terrible as the morning and night. Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain.... and all shall love her.

She lasts and lasts, stronger then the foundations of the earth... and her dry down is ambery and musky and precious.

Austrian_in_Denmark

When I was a child, I lived in Germany several times, and I still have a wonderful friend from one of those occasions. This friend once told me that my mother had strongly influenced her perfume tastes. She used Jean Louis Scherrer when we were children, and my friend has turned out to be an Eau du Soir girl.

This is no surprise. While not being identical, the two scents have a similar vibe to me. They both are dark, bitter, elegant, fascinating, and complicated, with a dominant moss note, plus greenness and flowers.

I owned Eau du Soir for a short while, but it was never at home on my skin, so it travelled on to my German friend. Surely Eau du Soir is doing its magic in a happy place now 😊.

Hayu Krisnawati

Classy.. elegant.. Femme Fatale.. it's my signature perfume.. i think i fall in love..

Maria Sköld-Gustafsson

Beautiful, female, elegant. Just love it!

Jmalone84

This is one fancy fragrance. Smells like a million bucks. However I would issue a disclaimer to any very young people looking to blind buy this because it’s definitely something for a more mature audience or an audience with more experience with fragrances. That said I’m a freshly turned 27 year old woman and I purchased a lovely set of this today. I also have a little bottle of Soir d’Orient which is my favourite of the line.

This is very much a fragrance one would wear for oneself, and I can imagine wearing this to attend an opera or a ballet. They don’t really make fragrances like this anymore and I am very pleased to add this one to my collection. My favourite phase is the spicy heart, and the bitter freshness in the opening is so refreshing after having my nose saturated by all the sweetie fruity perfumes saturating the market.

Love!

Teddyburr

OMG....Just got my first bottle of this truly unique, amazing beauty. I just had to have the 100ml size. I managed to get it at a SUPERB price, paying just a little more than the 50ml size.

I cannot describe all the content elements of perfumes as you “expert” reviewers on here do. I read the reviews with amazement - and so enjoy going through every one before getting a new perfume. I bought Eau du Soir on the basis of your reviews folks...thank you so, SO much.

I’ve toured the Department Stores over the past few years and was NOT impressed AT ALL on what I was “sampling” out there. I’m totally fed-up of smelling the sugar sweet, “samey” scents, which seem to make all the gals who swan past me smell as if they’ve ALL been using the same spray bottle!! I’m from the “old school” and love the following....Aromatics Elixir; Diva by Ungaro; Knowing by Estée Lauder; Jean Louis Scherrer and Scherrer II.....so you get my taste. I don’t like Flowerbomb (disappears on me in 15 minutes), Black Opium and all the latest ones out there.

Now THIS Eau du Soir....simply glorious. Yep, it’s another “stop-in-the-street” one on me, with folks asking “what is that FABULOUS Perfume you’re wearing?” It’s got so many facets and I can smell a different aspect of this juice each time I turn my head. I have to have some on my wrists so I can keep having a deep sniff of it. I’d actually describe it as “intoxicating”!! It Smells gorgeous on my clothes too. I LOVE this beauty and I know for sure I’ll never be without it now in my collection. I’m delighted with this discovery. It’s been around for YEARS, so I really don’t know how this one has escaped me for so long.

I’m No Spring Chicken now - but I CERTAINLY do not want to smell like an “older lady”. Oh Yes, I’ve smelt what I’d call an “old lady” perfume.....VANDERBILT (the lilac box with white swan). A girl who worked for me wore it....absolutely VILE smell - Vicar’s breath (apologies to Vicars who have nice breath) - next day garlic smell on a guy’s breath - Mothballs - simply HORRID!! Enough said about that horror!!

To conclude then....Who wants to smell like everyone else walking around these days, wearing an apology of a fragrance? It seems to some that as long as a perfume has SOME smell - that’s fine. Not for me...I’m sticking to my show-stoppers FOR EVER - IF I can still find them to purchase. Many are nowadays a shadow of their former selves in depth, strength, projection, richness and sensuality....but I’ll hang in there with what I love.

Slim5555

The first time I smelled Eau de Soir(eons ago)I wanted to drink it. This is one very sophisticated, womanly scents ever. When I first applied it I was reminded of the time that I went to Orchestra Hall in Chicago to see Solti conduct. All the ladies were exquisitely turned out in velvet, wool and silk crepe, emeralds, and most of all fur stoles(in a good way). It's that intoxicating. Now I think I have to go to eBay and buy some.

albertinedisparue

Smells like a million bucks.

I love this fragrance!

Sisley Eau du Soir is a grand, stately, imperial, and imposing scent that I find soapy clean and impossibly gorgeous. I was introduced to this after receiving a sample packet of shower gel and falling in love with the scent in an unforgettable moment years ago. I subsequently blind ordered the EDP and have grown to consider it irreplaceable in my collection! I am on my 2nd 100ml bottle and sometimes wear this daily. Much to the dismay of my wallet I have never found anything else like this!

There is something about the grapefruit, spruce, and floral blend (carnation stands out) that I just cannot get over. The effect is very cold, sharp, and classy, like a high-end slap in the face. Performance and projection are great as well. Sometimes a slight spiciness emerges from the base that bothers me (pepper is in the notes), but this is a minor squabble.

This may smell traditional at first whiff, but I find this miles apart from other chypres like Mitsouko and Aromatics Elixir than I cannot stand. Keep working with this one if you don't find it pleasing right away, I had this experience but soon came to find it very chic and modern!

Tip: EDS shower gel is divine and addicting, simpler than the EDP mostly representing the top notes of the fragrance. Amazing!

DrRosie

I love everything Sisley has to offer. When I wear this fragrance I feel extremely confident.

s.pellegrino

Feels like a warm hug and incredibly sexy at the same time. Smells confident, generous, classy, smart, distinguished - but always also surprisingly friendly, perhaps even kind.

Radoy

I've worn this for many years and love it - whenever I wear it, it takes me back to the happiest time in my life. Rich, warm and beautiful!

masako_30

Night enhances and amplifies the undisputed qualities of this great seducer.
Exquisite, with a strong character and demeanor, endlessly persistence, extremely elegance.
An elegance that inspires respect and reverence, so much devotion for which Eau du Soir amply repays.
Glamorous.
Now I recognize it, I know I smelled it many times, I also understand why I often happened to cross it on my way. Stellar.

I wonder how many valuable samples I still have around, whose existence I don't know.

eunicemichelle

A perfect bug repellent.

This is a real woman’s fragrance. You’ve lived life , you know what you want and you like luxury . You appreciate fine wines and champagne and you know your self worth . You realise the difference between class and what’s in fashion . Following your own trends and desires. Perfectly put together . Effortlessly you. You have style without needing try . Chic bohemian natural beauty .

Nuitdenoel

Beautiful, classical, soft. Like an expensive, French, luxury lotion. From one spritz on my wrist, lasting power is excellent. Linear but that’s perfectly fine. This is one perfume that does not need development to be beautiful.

*Aromoteca*

I was surprised to find out that I did not leave my impressions on the Evening Water ..
What can I say about the fragrance, if he has been my perfumery for 11 years already?
It is a masterpiece. For me, a masterpiece.

It is an aroma of luxury, beauty, wealth (wealth for everyone can be different, that’s what you think about wealth now, that’s what it means, status, dizzy. I can’t breathe it. If you try it, fall in love and love miracle!

For me, the Evening Water is the most beloved and beautiful chypre composition. And even though I am already familiar with so many flavors that I wrote about it somehow and immodestly, I confessed to many aromas of love, even on fragranttika pages, and at one time in my perfume I stood "emptiness" when I found it difficult for myself answer, what is my favorite fragrance? It happens that you get tired of aromas, at least in my case for sure.

So here. After 2 months of emptiness, I returned Sisley to his rightful place — to my Perfume I. This miraculous chypre potion I always have, and God forbid someone to take it off from production! All of my favorites were removed for one reason or another, I hope this flavor will pass this fate.

Many thanks to the perfumer Janine Mongin and the bow for creating this masterpiece! You can stamp the flavors to the right and left, some of them will be a "hit of sales" for a while, but soon forgotten as a fleeting dream. And you can create only 1 flavor. 1 song. 1 novel. .and remain in people's memory forever, as the creator of something unique, masterfully executed.
Janine, the author of 1 flavor, but what a! (there is information that it creates and now aromas, but I did not find any aromas of this information. It is considered that nevertheless, only evening water is in its account ..)

And let all sorts of "Turin" talking about cheap chypre, it is still a gorgeous fragrance of Lady, Business lady and just Women.
I am never guided by the opinions of critics-people who themselves have not created anything at all! (As a rule). In fact, who are they? Alien creatures? How do they differ from a person? Nothing. And such critics always amaze when the “report” sounds from their lips as the last resort. By the way, the same Turin, often changes its opinion about the flavors, which confirms that he is still a man)). I am never guided by the opinions of bloggers, if only the person himself will be interested in and interested in his perfumery tastes, and so we are all different! To whom chypre is beauty, but to someone like an atomic bomb.

Always, the famous phrase "Who is the judge?"
Try the flavors yourself, not focusing on fashion, girlfriends, colleagues, and reviews of critics, and then you will definitely find your favorite perfumery masterpieces and your perfumery "I"

I was looking for a woody, green, earthy fragrance, and based on the notes I thought I found the perfect one. I went to the store to test it and all I got was fabric softener. I waited hours and hours for it to transform into a magical woody scent, but disappointingly, I still smell like I doused myself in Snuggle fabric softener. The blue one I think. Maybe it's the juniper?

Scent: 10

I LOVE the smell of this perfume. It is green, intense, very long lasting with an incredible floral and woody touch. I am a man and this is the one of the perfumes that i choose when i want yo feel elegant and confident. Sonething weird happens yo me with this perfume. It is suposed yo be a feminine perfume but i like It more on me than on women. When i smell It on women i find in very clasical and serious and i feel as It fotos better an old women than a Young one. But when i smell It on a man It on myself i feel totally imoresed. The effect un the masculine skin os totally different and for me marvelous. The true is that my grandma had used this perfume sometime and i could remember that. One day when i went to a perfumery to buy a new bottle of black orchid (which other of my favourite scents) the shop assistant hace me a small tester of this perfume and told me "this is a women's perfume but i think you are going to LOVE It. Try It one day and look what do you think". Sinceramente i tried It It has his own soace on my top ten perfumes.

Longevity: 10

This is one of the most long lasting perfumes that i have. Around 8 hours on my skin and almost a week on my clothes.

Sillage: 9

The projection is very good and It lasts almost a whole night. I use this fragance usually to nightout and when i do that i can feel It even at the end of the night. Next morning while i go back home i can feel still the trial that i leave on my back.

Quality/price: 6

It is a bit expensive perfume. It is not as expensive as some niche perfumes or some special designer perfums, but is over the average prices conparing to most of Edo which one oerson can buy in a normal perfumery. I have paid 130€/100 ml but It is true that fue to his quality It is not necessary to use a lot and the diffusor id very good so the bottle lasts more than other perfumes with the same amount.

Versatility: 10

I find It a totally versatile perfume. It is totally unisex. It is green and fresh so is oerfect for a daily use but at the same time is intense, floral an Woody so It is oerfect for nightout aswell. I find It better for special ocassions or as accompany of elegant fittings, and i look It weareable un any season of the year.

I don't think I have reviewed this yet. I've been wearing a lot of Sisley lately - the three I have are Eau du Soir, Soir de Lune, and Soir d'Orient. Soir d'Orient is my favorite of the three, but it's the most 'special occasion" version. It's decadent and luxurious and super feminine in my opinion, very classy and expensive smelling, but I would only wear it to something elegant.

Eau du Soir is the most wearable, 'casual' of the three I have, if you can call it that. I feel like I can pull it off with a business casual outfit. The sillage isn't tremendous, which is what makes it wearable for everyday occassions. Its very long lasting, and like its sisters, it's very classy and elegant, just not as loud. It's very natural smelling, smells like quality ingredients, not synthetic garbage. Three sprays goes a long way.

I find that oakmoss is the most prominent note, which is cool bc I love oakmoss. I get some pathcouli, and a well blended floral accord, but can't pick out individual notes. I don't really know what juniper smells like, but nothing like the juniper berry (which gives gin its aroma).

It is chic, classy, and grown up. I won't say it's "mature" but I more envision this on a woman over 25, with a sophisticated style. It doesn't work on everyone, and this isn't a perfume I would wear with a super casual outfit and sneakers. It's too dressed up for that.

Beautiful perfume, it's become one of my standout favorites, and I find myself reaching for my Sisley's more than my other perfumes by a long shot. It's a shame that they are so insanely freaking expensive, but I must say, it's worth the money, and I have no regrets in owning a full bottle of this!

justchillinxo

I reaally wanted to like this or it’s sister because of the beautiful bottles. Even though I like jicky and mitsouko, which are classics that have an acquired taste, I simply couldn’t stand these. They are SO strong and.. pungent. I’m not sure how else to describe it other than not pleasant. It’s like an evergreen/pine tree, but without any of the sweetness, warmth or balsamic qualities, just the top screetchy note. In my opinion they are simply not charming or whimsical in the way I had hoped, perhaps if they came out with a light version I could stomach it :(

GRAF

This is totally unisex IMO, light, soft, versatile, fresh old school scent with good longevity and moderate to soft sillage, suitable for warm weather daytime. Very wearable and pleasant. One of the best old school scents I've ever smelt. Definitely not sexy or sultry as many reviews say. Just a pleasant old school scent.

The notes are well mixed and none is more pronounced than the others. It's like a well-tuned piano. All I get is a smooth combo of oakmoss, pepper, carnation, iris and grapefruit.

I think anyone who hates old school scent will like this. Very well blended.

syracusa

I can't make up my mind about it. I want to love it because it is classic and elegant and such a legend. I see that.
But...I don't know... there's something shrill and too sharp about it. The notes are VERY high, almost chemically high. Someone here characterized this as a deep, sultry perfume. In what Universe? Definitely not in the one I know - where Samsara EDP is the epitome of deep and sultry. This is the opposite of it.
Because of the citrus, Sisley Eau de Soir smells almost like counter-top cleaner to me. I have it and 24 Faubourg for their classic, elegant impact - and while wearing both of them, Sisley on left arm, Faubourg on right arm, I am clearly leaning Faubourg. Notes are lower, flowers are clearer and the absence of citrus keeps it elegant but away from counter-top cleaner.
Well. It's official. I discovered I don't like citrus notes in my perfumes.

PerfumedParrot

If YOU were Sisley’s ‘Eau Du Soir’, you’d be a mature but classy lady, divorced maybe or widowed by your millionaire husband. You’ve inherited the estate and like to shop in Harrods for your groceries. You still have your petite figure, as money (plus the Argentinian gardener) keeps you young. You know how to hide the sunspots on your chest and neck wrinkles with a chic poloneck cashmere jumper. Your older sister is ‘Diva’ by Ungaro, who looks like Donatella Versace and is a flamboyant embarrassment to your now long dead parents. Your daughter is Clinique’s ‘Aromatics Elixir’ whom is a less refined, shyer and more diluted version of yourself, and whom will probably never live-up to your own expectations of grandeur.

louiee

My signature and my All time favorite. Love at first sniff. So lovely and so rare. A real perfume gem. Long lasting and heavy in a heavenly way. Fills a room with class and style. Definitely worth the price.

gledmagicwater

A perfume for intimidation...!

lapolli

This is the scent for the day you know who you are.

rola.asad

Very mature and classy!!
Herbal and green!
Similar to Ivoire of Balmain but more vintage-y!
Potent, elegant, and mature!

Jose Marcos

for those who like Eau du Soir, try Chanel pour Monsieur, you will be delighted.

DomfromBE

I'm addicted to Chyprés, mostly Mitsouko (since 1989) and Soir de Lune (since 2015) but with these extremely hot days I rediscover the soapy beauty of Eau du Soir and how well mannered and distinctive it can be. Simply love it.

YYY_Delilah

A bright, cool, sharp, pungent, thrilling oakmoss bomb.

However the oakmoss is rendered these days. It's such a pity to have occasion to mention that (sigh!) ... but they've made a thoroughly good job of it here, whichever route they took (synthetics or selectively-bred oakmoss).

justfloral

I wore it only at night.
Sage + grapefruit + oakmoss.
Elegant chypre. After application I felt like drunken - it was sooo good, uplifting, "power scent".

kjana

elegant, a bit cold and bordering on the "dont you dare" attitude of a strong lady. it is for mature people who are maybe a but domineering.

Venusia

I didn‘t try the original, but this reformulation is a perfectly ice-cold synthetic soapy mess. If the original was anywhere near this, I still could wear it only on gloomy days at funerals or at those deadly boring charity parties that Diana helplessly attended, and that just to scare the hell out of the snobbish aristocracy. Thanks God I don‘t need to make myself smart wearing such a stinker and pretending it‘s any good.
Edit: exactly! „Sinister“ is his name

emper.atrizz

Really a luxury perfume. It is gorgeous unisex scent, but not for everyone. One of my favorites signature perfumes.

amourdelarose

This is a surprisingly wearable oakmoss. No idea why but it reminds me of Ivoire of Balmain. I’ve never seen such a soft and easy-going oakmoss so I want to think what I’m smelling is galbanum but there’s no galbanum in the notes. Also I’d say that it shares a similar vibe with Givenchy III. Not for me, I feel like it’s a little old smelling for me, neither am I fan of this old and dry galbanum/oakmoss vibe, but it surely is the best of it’s genre.

Before you start reading this review switch your spotify on and and search for a track called Sunchyme by Dario G and leave it playing in the background....

Eau du Soir Sisley is a euphoria scent unlike anything out there! I am a male who has been hijacked by this female beauty of a scent and since Karma is sweet here, I have planned to surrender and stay a prisoner and never let go of her, in return to be filled with her charm, wisdom and everlasting beauty she throws back!

She is a drug, very addictive, and once tried, you will never want to be without her, once your bottle has dried to it's last drop you will walk past your favorite fragrance shop and she will call you, might even tempt you just like Eve did to Adam. Trust me gentlemen she's worth it!

Count Hubert d'Ornano knew exactly what he was creating to satisfy his Countess Isabelle d’Ornano when he gave her
Eau Du Soir as a gift, a little bird told me that Count Hubert d'Oranano himself used this scent as much as his Countess did! So Gentlemen don't be foolish to think that women only can wear this, seek her out let her prison you with her charm and let her turn you into a very special and original gentleman!

....If Sunchyme is still playing in the background and you feel that this sweet tune is radiating sun out of your speakers.... just wait till you try Eau Du Soir!

Eau du Soir will radiate sunshine inside your soul, she will take you to your childhood innocence and fill you with joy with her rich chypre and turkish pepper smell that will last for hours and hours making you feel classy, calm and confident.

I own over 50 fragrances mostly niche and If I was allowed to take with me just one fragrance on a deserted island Eau du Soir would be hands down my choice.

Eau du Soir is a hidden Masterpiece... a secret waiting to be discovered...but ssshhh don't tell everyone about it!

I was very lucky to stumble upon a vintage bottle of this juice (black bottle). Upon spraying, Holy OAKMOSS! Wow! At first it is very powerful, like a wave crashing into you but then it settles after 10 minutes to a calm stream. Patchouli, Iris and a small hint of rose is present in the first six hours. The smell reminds me of water, or as some would say an Ocean Candle or room spray. To others smelling on me, they can detect rose above all else. There is a slight carnation note buried in here. Very subtle, not over powering. This would be best worn in mid summer during the day. It is a very lovely scent, but dose carefully!! Too much can be very cloying. Almost wish they would have made a splash bottle.

amanda7

I have tried this in a shop and I quite liked it. It is classical, woody, spicy and very elegant. I can imagine wearing it because it is fresh and feminine. "But" it is similar to other scents I like ( Miss Dior, Chanel No.19 )and the price is absolutely exorbitant when you compare it with similar quality brands. And maybe my personal opinion I really don´t like the bottle. The lid looks nice in the photo but reality is much worse. I didn´t like to touch it, cheap plastic. So I would buy it just for a reasonable price in sales.

Annabear

I remember walking through David Jones in Sydney around 10 years ago, and having the Sisley consultant wave me down to try this fragrance. I told her I didn't like 'new' fragrances, I was more interested in The classics (not the lolly pop explosions). She insisted I try this, and I did and I loved it.
Many years and at least four bottles later, this remains one of my signature scents (I have a few). It's deep, sultry, aromatic, seductive, dark and it lasts for ages. It's a classic.

Donnachka

I went to Bloomingdales to smell three perfumes by Sisley. This one was my least favorite. It did not stay strong longer than 15 minutes, and it stayed close to my skin for about 2 hours. I smell some carnation, some rose, some white flowers. I do not smell any patchouli. Frankly I do not care for this smell on my skin. Now, it's sister Soir d'Оrient is a totally different story, and the silage on it is stronger this the original Soir. However, they are polar opposites of each other.

joanamanoel

This is the perfume !!!!!!!

All others are just scents.

Love it!!!!!

gazelle

Eau de Soir wears with my chemistry just as it smells in the first spritz. WOW! I love the shock of the moss at the beginning and throughout. As much as I love civet in my chypres, this has no civet and I can wear it during the day anywhere. At my, ahem, elderly age, I prefer not to wear civet during the day leaving it to the younger generation to do so during day. It does smell like my vintage Scherrer after several hours of wearing it, but the Soir edt has greater potency than my Scherrer. It might smell dated to some. So what. No one else is going to kiss my neck except my husband, and he likes it. Stuck in the eighties, maybe? Just love Fragrantica Review Board, thank you. I can express my excitement along with others who share it.

Tiffany_Fazon

I am in love with this perfume, a scent I find myself craving. It reminds me of an elegant, head-strong woman who is very sure of herself. This scent has depth and dimension, it's sexy, sultry and seductive in the classiest way possible. This perfume makes a statement and isn't easily forgotten! A must have in any collection!

carlosalbertoandradecruz

MY WIFE'S STATEMENT
I loved wearing perfumes all my life. Without being knowledgeable in fragrances or a collectionner - I am just a plain user - I must have bought more than 30 different perfumes and tried a couple of hundreds.
And the best one for me is.... EAU DU SOIR
It lasts an eternity, passes its scent to the clothes, to the wardrobe and I estimate a sillage at its peak of more than 12 feet. And all that with a couple of sprays.

MY STATEMENT
She means it !!!!

ChrisInBrooklyn

This is a really lovely and mature fragrance! It is an absolute subtle luxury; a more elegant, refined and *effervescent* marriage of vintage Aromatics Elixir and Paloma Picasso! It also reminds me of Cabochard in the dry down. This is what Aromatics Elixir wishes it was. Where AE screeches with its greenness, EdS actually IS a subtle and dynamic elixir.

cecfor

I tried this from a store in 2013. It was difficult in the beginning as I can find many oakmossy frags to be although oakmiss is a basenote. After quite a while it was a spicy bliss, one of the best I have tried. After a year I bought 2014 version. It was not at all that difficult in the beginning, but it was also not as delicious in the base. I still love it, but it is not as good as I remember. What I think happened is that they toned down oakmoss and amped up patchouli.....

kjana

i like this one a lot. it says "i am a strong womand and you better not mess with me" - it is a mature, powerful affair.
for some reason this diappears quickly on me although everyone says this is long lasting (other scents do not do this to me) - however i am contemplating buying it. i tried it twice and it has personality and also is a bit mischievous which i like.

DracheMitch

It smells like that time when you were 7or 8 and you used your mother's expensive bath oil. It is very "clean". This fragrance feels decadent, slightly vintage in a "they don't make fragrances like this anymore" way; totally couture. There's no aldehydes, so you avoid that "old" vibe. There's tension between the soft, sweet florals and the tender, bitter herbs. This is the fragrance equivalent of a Chanel suit being worn to lunch at Gramercy Tavern. RICH!

mrstewart1969

One of my favourite perfumes of all time. I switch between Eau de Soir and Diva by Ungaro as my signature scents. I couldn't live without either one!

I love the fresh, sparkling, green opening of Eau de Soir so much. And it gets better as it develops - the heavy woodsy, herby, aromatic chypre loveliness stays with you all day. A lot of my scarves/coats have absorbed this scent and it's heavenly. It's a rich, luxurious, beautiful, original scent, but still a true classic floral chypre. And as I have said in my other 'chypre' reviews, it gives me the sense of 'coming home at last' and of being 'at one with myself'. To me, these are the feelings I am always chasing when trying out scents. I can appreciate many perfumes for their smell alone but I would never buy them unless I get this reaction!

For me, Eau de Soir is an expensive purchase, and I usually only receive it as a gift from my generous hubby. Very gratefully received too...I get compliments on this one but not as many as when wearing Diva. I have converted my sister to it and we are now Eau de Soir addicts, when we are in the money, which is not very often. : )

mystica

Smells just like fresh, green dollars... 100 ones to be specific.

nguyễn.nhung

I blind bought it on Fragrancenet. Absolutely dissapointed. It dries quickly on my skin, even on my scarf. Lolita Lempicka is long lasting than it. Its smell like my old hair lotion.

ndenman137

I've got it as a gift, so tried to like it, but it was not to be((. One of my friends used to wear it (she loved it!) , but I could hardly smell it on her and never liked it. Would never buy it for myself!
I wear it sometimes mostly because it disappears on me very quickly. Stays a bit longer on a woolen scarf. Nobody ever noticed it on me, even when I used a lot.
Yes, it is woody, spicy and warm, but way too soapy for me. Reminds me of an old washing powder (modern washing powders smell better than this perfume).
Sorry about the negative review, but this is how it was for me!

For The Love of Perfume

I have to review this one again. yes, the first spray is very heavy and strong, but after an hour or so, is when this fragrance is at it's best! Again, I asked my mom what she thought and she said that it is quite nice, with just a hint of soapiness. A far cry from the old and mustiness smell she had stated before..lol. I have to say, I really enjoy this now. It is very classy, timeless and elegant and which also has a vintage vibe to it and it lasts so long. I am glad that I did not get rid of this little gem :)

Kalitera

We used to take a night train to the seaside, and I remember opening the window and smelling, no, literally - inhaling aromas of the night - the pine trees, grass and all the greenness and herbage surrounding the trails... you know, vegetation smells very distinctly at nighttime, and I just couldn't get enough of it!

Eau de Soir is exactly that - very fresh and very herbal, at the same time it's not "nature child" type of fragrance. It is truly elegant, classy and feminine.

Elsi

I concur with @Perfumeaddict 77 that this is a beautiful, elegant and well-executed chypre. Sadly for me, the better the chypre, the worse it smells on me (which I have concluded is due to skin chemistry). Luckily, my mum wears chypres well, so I bought her this fragrance and it's one of her favourites

Perfumeaddict777

I was never really a lover of chypre's until recently. I find that i love oakmoss too; when it's done right. This perfume is an example of a perfect chypre and a perfectly done oakmoss. This is classy . This perfume is an aquired taste, just as caviar isn't delicious to some, this perfume is not delicious to everyone. I find it wonderful and nostalgic. It smells like leaves, dusty wooden cabinets, fall air, vases of flowers. As soon as i put this on i was reminded of my childhood. When i was between 7-9 we moved into a new house. It was October. Me and my sister and brother were walking around our new neighborhood. Stepping on dead leaves that had fallen off the trees around us on the side walk. Picking flowers out of our neighbors flower garden and leaving her a bouquet on her porch, lol. Walking into the house and seeing mom opening the cabinets and the dust was whisking around. The wooden staircase had a smell, Windows open blowing chilly October air in the house. All those scents are in this perfume. All those memory's in complete detail came back as if it just happened. This perfume is a lovely memory for me. To me it is perfect for the fall. Longevity is outstanding, 24 hours on my skin. Sillage fills a room for the first 10 minutes then is an arms length for a good 30 minutes. After that it radiates around me like a beautiful hedge. One of the first chypre's i fell for!!

SCBohemian

Eau de Soir is an absolute treasure! The opening mandarin and grapefruit notes crescendo into freshly cut spruce and lily of the valley blossoms, followed by powdery patchouli, sandalwood, and oak moss. The sharp citrus notes juxtaposed with the lush floral and woody musk base make this EDP unforgettable. Moments after spraying, it unfurls into a comforting and ethereal fragrance.

Eau de Soir exudes luxury, but not in a garish way. It is discreet, sophisticated, understated. Wish I could bathe in this soapy chypre! Sillage is above average; longevity is 7+ hours. Perfectly unisex. Eau de Soir has become my signature perfume for spring and summer. Get yourself a bottle of this classic beauty--and be prepared for many compliments!

kristelg

I recently discovered this amazing fragance and fell in love with it. But, I got an older bottle (2008) from eBay and the smell is not as good as my small tester. I read about the oakmoss levels used to be much higher so maybe that is the reason this bottle doesn't live up to my expectations? Or maybe it just turned bad as it is 8 years old and I got it without the box. The strange thing is it smells fine on a paper strip but not on my skin. Will keep using my small tester and buy a full brand new bottle when it is finished. Because it really is gorgeous!!

And if anyone thinks the not so yummy smell on my skin is the oakmoss and is interested in swapping, send me a message!

kl99

It was born in 1990 but is a classic chypre across 1975 and 1985.

In fact to me is very similar to Paloma Picasso (which is a bit more warm, animal and sensual) and remind me of Coriandre also.

So, this scent is not original or unique, but it is surely High Class.
High society woman style. A woman living in an historical house into the woods. Precious fornitures. Dressing Chanel, Jil Sander.

Very Good Fragrance but defects of seriousness and coldness in my opinion.

A 90s female chypre nostalgia drenched in class, sensual and well executed, signature scent material.

I found a vintage mini bottle and I splashed this beauty on and I drifted back to an elegant upscale shopping avenue, surrounded by beautiful elegant women with their shopping bags and their youthful character walking past me.

Mossy, musky and well blended, with a longevity to the likes of the masterpieces of the past and a prominent but not in your face sillage, this is an ideal gift to a woman over 25. A European retro air to surround her and her elegant Hermes outfit.

I always appreciate scents that evoke emotions within me, and this is definitely one of them.

chyprespace

Is there anyone else who would say this is the female version of Azzaro? It reminds me very strongly of a cologne a man whom I used to know used to wear, but I am not sure that it was Azzaro. In any case, the resemblance to me to this one men's cologne is absolutely striking. It is a fresh warm green chypre, like Scherrer without the stank.

For The Love of Perfume

I had bought this on a blind buy and because of the reviews. I put a little on in the morning and went to my mother's house and she asked, "What is that moldy smell?" It smells old and musty. Needless to say I was embarrassed. We both had a good laugh!
I spent a lot of money on this perfume. I really value my mom's opinion on fragrances. She grew up as a Chanel girl.
The first initial blast I must say is very heady and chrype. Maybe a new formulation?? After a few hours when it is almost gone is when the fragrance is at its best.....sorry this one did not work for me.

Gigi The Fashionista

The bottle is pure luxury with the golden head of Venus. But the scent is just as luxurious. This bottle contains a magic spell which can only work it's magic in the night as you walk out among other people whose fragrances can't hold a candle next to this one. This is a beautiful evening cologne of nocturnal beauty. The musk and patchouli and amber at the base are working their magic. The aroma is green and a tad like incense with strong musk but it does also have a very heady flowery smell. The rose, iris, lily of the valley and jasmine as well as French labdanum keep it floral enough for me. These are flowers that are blooming in the dark under moonlight. This is a gorgeous absolutely divine fragrance, a real masterpiece. To me, it evokes a classical work of art, the Venus de Milo or Boticelli's Birth of Venus. There is something about it that smells feminine in a mature and classy way like a woman you admire from a far or like you would a sculpture. You never want to get too close but she keeps drawing you nearer and nearer because you'd like to see exactly what she's made of. The scents are each well balanced and blended. I love to smell this on myself. I hope to smell it on others.

The golden queen bold strong rich pure class .But what I feel in the beginning its kind of chocolate, dark chocolate .strange because is not listed in description but maybe the darkness or richness make me feel the chocolate ! Anyway it's elegant unique and absolutely not "old school "it's classic but modern !!!9/10

This is in my opinion the example of a perfect perfume. When I look at the glowing golden juice in its elegant crystal bottle, I see a unique soul shines through its marvelously beautiful body. It is whole and reflects the presence of an art piece.

The smell is rich, creamy and golden on my skin. Even though it has its own personality, it becomes quiet very quickly once it meets my skin. When the fragrance has settled, it starts whispering secrets of the dazzling flowers and herbs it is made of. I can hear that all of them have their own stories. And then the voices blend together in a sweet harmony. They blend so well together that they become one charming voice singing an alluring song. A magnificent song about warmth, beauty and love...

It is definitely not an every day fragrance for me. I only ever use this magic potion when I feel the need of it. Today is one of those days. After spraying it a few times I am now sitting here all enchanted and thinking about what a beautiful thing it is.

I love this perfume. My husband went on a business trip to Paris in the 90s and bought me all sorts of wonderful things and one of them was a bottle of Eau de Soir. He found it in a perfume shop on the Champs Elysees. The sales women in the shop said it was new, just released in Paris, and the "it" fragrance of the season. I had never worn or even smelled anything like it but it was love at first whiff. It sparked my interest to learned all about Chypre perfumes. I knew little about perfume except that I I had a firm dislike for perfumes I considered "strong." The Chypre family was so different from the mega popular oriental fragrances I avoided, and yet Eau de Soir did have quite a presence. I have the original bottle he gave me and later I bought a bigger size, and I decant it into the original for sentimental reasons. I love that the bottles are refillable. Most of the money goes into the bottle/packaging so it should be reusable. Maybe it was before the reformulation because it smell the same as the first bottle which was one of the first made. I have a few carded tester vials from the 90s, and they all smell like that original bottle too.

something_wild

One of my all time favourite fragrances.
So rich, so elegant. This is a beautiful, effervescent fragrance has sweet and sour notes that sparkle on the skin. Kind of reminds me of the candy SweetTarts on my skin.
Radiant, sexy, floral, spicy, powdery, long lasting ... perfect for day and night.

Perfumelover15

One of the best perfumes. But I mean the original formula. I keep some quantity from the 90s. Elegant, lush, luxurious, rich, deep. Floral chypre at its best. I would say aristocratic too. Beautiful jasmine, patchouli, oak moss and some herbs. What you smell in the perfumeries nowadays has nothing to do with this experience.

Jyrhara

I bought a 2ml miniature of Eau du Soir just to try it. The opening is amazing, lush and ultra-feminine. There is some development after that, but the drydown seems a bit lacking. Having a few vintages in my collection, I'm thinking maybe it's a faulty reformulation... I'm thinking of buying a full bottle anyway, because it makes me feel refined, and it does so for hours.

They have finally destroyed this wonderful creation for good... Have you smelled the new bottles? All chypre is gone. Now it smell more like Soir de Lune. What a shame.

Just tried a sample at 49 yrs of age. Wonderful.

Would not have used in my twenties as I wasn't as intelligent of mentally mature as I am now.
So if you are in your 20's open your mind and give this a go.

Fabulous, Wonderful...............could go on forever!

Mr. Hubert D'Ornano had passed away last Friday (25 September 2015) in the age of 89. As the creator of Eau Du Soir and being a loving husband. I wish this perfume lives on, so does his love story.

Mr. D'ornano, I will always remember how a great man you are.

Victoria Regia

Unwearable. Not only is it very dated, but also super STRONG. It smells like a bar of old school soap that's been trapped in a musty cellar since the 1800's. I'm certain most people would be put off by this, so be careful if you choose to wear this to work or when meeting someone for the first time. Same goes for it's sibling, Soir de Lune.

emi

The most beautiful Chypre I have ever smelt. So dry and woody. Love it so much.

MarikaKhodr

My favourite green chypre with a perfect balance between the green freshness, clean soapiness and deep earthiness. No animalic features to my nose - only a slightly dark undertone. It's not linear in any way but stays true to its first character and remains dazzling from beginning to end.

This is my no 1 go to scent when having an important business meeting (no 2 is Hermes Faubourg 24). When wearing this I'm on top of the world. It's one potent juice no doubt, but the perfect balance between the freshness and earthiness makes it office friendly if you go lightly on the trigger. And it lasts all day and well into the night, which is a must for me.

Today, I unfortunately have to give a rather negative review for my beloved yet reformulated Eau du Soir.

I'm going through some hormonal changes and am able to detect notes/smells like never before. And I'm clearly able to see what reformulation actually did to this once masterpiece.

There is certainly a significant amount of decrease in the use of oakmoss (like if the ratio was %35 in the past, today it's only %1 or so), or the natural ingredient has been changed with an artificial one instead, albeit very successfully. I believe this alteration has changed the very heart of the perfume and ripped it off from its previous glamour.

Yes, we do still have a decent perfume, but I'm really not sure if Eau du Soir is that special now to deserve some 192 Euros per 50 ml as of today. I am sorry to say no...

Longevity and sillage wise the juice is still superb, but it's definitely watered down and has a slightly artificial edge to it. I will cherish my current bottle (deemed special enough as a gift for my 30th birthday) but I will not be purchasing a new one when I finish it. I am so upset over the death of European/French perfume industry because of the IFRA nonsense and/or for whatever ulterior motives.

Thank you to a lovely Fragranctica for sending me a sample. Unfortunately on my skin I get a promising wildflower opening but ends up being hotel hand soap and lotion. Not my cup of tea.

Evelyn Orchid

A wise man once said to gather and hold your time as it's the only and the most precious thing one has in his possession. Holding the present in your grasp could as just signify as having few spritzes of Eau du Soir to start your most precious valuable time last. Because the truth is, perfumes have the power to reunite the present, almost inexistent, the future, only a vision and the past, the only certain point in time, in one glorious moment enjoying blissfully every bit of it. Eau du Soir is a powerful perfume, with a superb balance between the sensuality and the intensity that results in an elegant, night-ish melancholic way. Brings back memories since it has the air of something already familiar but it is exotic and rich at the same time. It's strong and confident, very classy. When I've first discovered it in the nineties, it felt like finding a well-hidden treasure in the attic. It develops into a lustful and mysteriously attractive scent, soft and warm.
It might be that EdS needs time to get to like it so it won't fullfil all your wishes and expectations at first but soon you will discover the worth of each day of the journey....

SolangeN

Wearing this a couple of days in a row revealed an interesting facet that hadn't registered at spritz-and-buy time.

Namely, it smells like money - and I mean it literally smells like a dollar bill. There's a metallic note running through it that evokes the specific U.S. Treasury ink and paper mix of American currency.

As it dries down, the green/juniper/moss combination creates that same leathery scent as old bills that have passed through and absorbed oils from many hands.

I tried this perfume yesterday after hearing about its wonderful unique smell, comments in here were also promising.

Well, I have stayed several times in Sofitel hotels around the world. Au de soir smells EXACTLY like Hermes toiletries offered by Sofitel !!!

To me, it's a very soapy smell, clean, and that's it. I don't find it as sophisticated as I have axpected it to be.

Loubella

This was recommended by a friend and recently happily received as a Christmas present,(gift set with the body lotion and Eau De Parfum).
My good friend thought I would like it because of similarities between it and my great love Givenchy iii and it is an equally beautiful Chypre although lacking the Galbanum that is my constant throughout all of the scents I love. I do love it though, including the bright citrussy opening, herbal and fresh and then the slow unfolding of the warmer notes and the white flowers on my skin. A really well balanced fragrance though I feel not quite as complex as Givenchy iii, also does not last on me as long as I would expect for an Eau de Parfum.
Proving addictive though amd too good to keep for special occasions!

This perfume for me is one of the very best - ever!!!
I keep returning to it time after time and I always have a bottle in my fridge! Has anyone out there noticed that it is one of the few that has not been reformulted? I've only been wearing it for about 8 years and to me its not changed. Has anyone got any other views on this? Most of everthing out there has been redone....and as for the Chanels!! Coco Mademoiselle was beautiful and brilliant when it first came out - but now its like bad shampoo but with huge sillage!! No 5 is a shadow of its former self....I remember when my mother had a box of 3 Chanel no 5 soaps as a present - I used to bury my nose in the box and just inhale! (I was about 5)so what is going on out there? Any other views?

HanamiTsukimi

I don't know but that this has really grown on me. I have a bottle of this featuring real oakmoss (it was produced in 2007) that I inherited, untouched, from under my mother's bathroom sink and that I was planning to give away, swap or sell. After several trials, I've rethought that plan. I suspect the key is to use it sparingly.

The opening notes are strong and sharp and green, very heavy on the citrus. I admit that's still not too much to my taste.

But after that stage it really grows on me. It becomes warm and spicy, deep and sumptuous, like old world romance in a luscious Italian garden. Maybe that's also why it reminds me of something a sophisticated woman would wear to an opera.

Arlene-Beatrix

Very sour on my skin! First notes were hardly bearable, but then this fragrance has developed into deep, aromatic scent, very elegant, but not in my style.

Maodo

Looking for the best oakmoss, Eau du Soir has it. Tried it today for the first time in my life and spot on! This will be mine one day. Unfortunately it's quite pricey. Eau du Soir reminds me of the wonderful Jean Louis Scherrer de Jean Louis Scherrer. Also very (oak)mossy, but this one is more floral, less masculine. Eau du Soir has the 'royal' atmosphere that Private Collection of Estee Lauder has. Chique and elegant. Eau du Soir has a breathtaking syringa. This flower was planted in the verge of the long street where I lived as a child. I remember her purple petals and her fantastic smell in the summer when I came home from school. 'Soir' means evening. Well, I would not mind wearing this gem 24 hours a day.

EDIT:

Check this out: it's the ONLY fragrance for female out of thousands of fragrances for females on Fragrantica that has SYRINGA & OAKMOSS in it. I am baffled. Well done, Sisley!

Henriette

I truly find Luca Turin's opinion on this beauty too harsh.
I suppose he finds Eau du Soir quite dismal only because he must have sniffed some bad reformulation.
If he had sniffed Eau du Soir as it was in its original, I am sure he would be much less rude towards this lovely chypre.

The same way we are now disappointed and mourn over the lost Diorella, the long gone Vent Vert, the Aprés l'Ondée of long ago, the Bandit as it was, the original Shalimar, the Chanel N°5 as we all knew it, the Jolie Madame we first met ...

You to go on.

Endlessly, unfortunately.

golinka

Sample, anyone....

Iris_it

I finally decided to swap Eau du Soir . I find its opening lovely for the first minutes but its heart is too harsh and pungent . The drydown has a medicinal twist and it is not pleasant at all in hot weather .There are so many chypres and much more beautiful than Eau du Soir : orginal formulas of Chanel 19 , Scherrer , Eau de Private Collection , Mitsouko ...
Well , the openings of vintage Scherrer and Chanel 19 are severe but so nose-intriguing and they live place to a wonderful velvety mixage with the florals . This feature is not present in Eau du Soir . The heart of this fragrance is harsh for no purpose .

I do not see any reason to spend a lot of money on this ( in my opinion of course ) overrated fragrance . As I did not reach for it anymore , it was time for my bottle to find a more appreciative home .

mystica

For claudia26 and others wondering if the stopper is really gold: Well no, it's rather matte gold plated and it doesn't have a material value of its own. That is to say a jeweller wouldn't pay you anything if you decided to sell it.

Also I wish they could bring back the original intensity of the oak moss in this perfume, yet we know that such reformulations are final as death. Luckily Eau du Soir is still wearable and gorgeous although a bit weaker maybe.

Edee

Well my Sisley Eau Du Soir arrived today. I love the smell. Elegant, fresh and intoxicating. It is so well blended. It really has a strong effect on my emotional and mental state. I wish the very air I breathed smelled like this. I have heard that this is considered a strong scent. It doesn't seem that strong to me. It calms down after about an hour. I can smell it on me, but it is not strong. Is this because of the restrictions on oakmoss? If it is, we must demand they bring it back. I want this scent to last for at least 12-16 hours. Yes it is that good.

Edit: Well it lasted about 8-10 hours. After 8 hours I could still smell it when I put my wrist up to my nose. It was faint, but still fabulous.

Schnickelfritz

I have smelled this wonderfully intense scent on woman before and when I received my bottle it smelled wonderful, but by some horrible twist of fate when it touched my skin it turned into cheap motel soap! If I inhale deeply I can slightly smell the spicy, woods underneath. This makes me sad.

Chouli Galore

Eau du Soir is one of my four favorite chypre style perfumes.
When I spray this one on it makes me feel like a million bucks! I smell chic and unique because not everyone wears this perfume nor knows about this pretty lady. Eau du Soir is regal and beautiful and full of life!
The opening strong and herbaceous and the longevity is hours and hours with a spicy citrus warm amber and patchouli drydown. Very alluring and a perfect perfume for all of the beautiful and classy women on Earth.

SolangeN

Jean Louis Scherrer plus fir tree. A perfect green chypre.

flowers-in-the-springtime

A beautiful and refined natural aromatic chypre perfume.
In the initial spritz it's heavy on the citrus making this a very fresh composition. The fragrance carries a strong woody note right through. Without changing in definition, along comes juniper and I swear there is sage in this although it's not mentioned. The heart of this fragrance creates a sharp and green, lemony, herbal aroma which is powerfully strong and has epic staying power.
Although I felt that this perfume initially, did not work terribly well with my body chemistry, I was compelled to smell it continuously, was constantly aware of its gorgeous and elegant aroma wafting around me and I have become hooked. There is something so aromatic, so utterly green and addictive that I am craving this.
This is class in a bottle, aloof, independent, stylish and fresh.
Longevity is outstanding, I couldn't even shower this one off me and it packs a pretty great silage too. You WILL be noticed for wearing this perfume!

happycapybara

Aromatic green chypre with excellent longevity and silage. Wearing this, one will leave a pleasant, fresh and herbal trail behind. I agree with Lana that this does lend a nod to La Perla (love La Perla!) However, where La Perla has an undeniable warmth about it, Eau du Soir, is cold, refined and a bit removed. I feel alert when I inhale Eau du Soir. This fragrance is very breathable and herbalistically invigorating. Elegant, soothing and refined.

mystica

Eau du Soir has been reformulated I think in 2011 or 2012. So the version I have is the reformulated one. I can say that the character of the scent is the same, the intensity and creamy feel it gives (the oakmoss) is lighter and that's the main difference from the previous formula. Other than that longevity is still very good.

Eau du Soir smells like fresh, green earth and aloe vera to me. Smelling it -and I can't stop doing that whenever I apply some- feels like comfortably lying on earth and digging my nose in the moist soil in a damp, evergreen forest in autumn. For that reason, Eau du Soir is quite a calming and cooling fragrance in hot weather. It is literally, exactly an intoxicatingly fresh breath among the syrupy-sweet scents of the world.

This perfume is elegance in a bottle. It is to me an olfactory portrait of a confident, self-assured, motherly, beautiful, graceful woman. And she is never boring...

Lana148

Eau du Soir Sisley is a fabulous Chypre Floral, made in a classic way.

This is very, very elegant, evening, special occasion perfume.

It remind me a lot of La Perla by La Perla - the same type of rich, complex fragrance, but much more greener.

Love it!

Edee

Oh my goodness, this fragrance is rich, opulent and beautiful. I was a little worried that this fragrance would be too strong or even too outdoorsy (all the oakmoss and juniper). A very generous fragrantican sent me a decant of this, along with a few other samples. Thank you so much by the way. This scent is so well blended that I can smell all the elements from the start. It is definitely a floral chyrpe. The best kind. One that accentuates my body's chemistry. It kind of reminds me of Ivoire de Balmain. That is another floral chype that just does amazing things with my body chemistry. Only Sisley Eau du Soir does it better. I was going to wait until Christmas to get this, but I am going to try to get it next month if possible. Sample first if you wish, but this is amazing, it makes you feel as opulent as it smells. One of the best.

Migalex

It is very strong and smells a lot of conipherous trees to me, quite green and sharp. I find it interesting but it is not one of my favourites. I love the name, though, and it's extreme freshness makes it really appropriate for a summer evening, after a shower. I find it too simple though, and not sophisticated, and in my opinion there is nothing here to justify its price.

Quasar

The most BEAUTIFUL FRAGRANCE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elegant timless

Nil3

I agree with most reviewers. This perfume should linger on Julie Andrews, queen rania of Jordan,Katherine Hepburn,.... My beautiful mother. :)
