China picks "Wolf Warrior 2" for Oscar bid

Wu Jing's action movie will represent China to compete for Best Foreign Language

Wu Jing returns in the highly successful "Wolf Warrior 2".

9 Oct – Instead of going the art film route, China has decided to send the box office hit "Wolf Warrior 2" as its entry in the Best Foreign Language Film category at next year's Academy Awards.

As reported on CRI, the movie, which made RMB5.7 billion at the box office, is the highest-grossing film of all time in China, surpassing even the previous record held by Stephen Chow's "The Mermaid".

However, the decision has since been slammed by many, with film critics saying that no movie with such commercial success would ever win a category that basically awards artsy dramatic films.

They also debated the fact that all the other entries, including Hong Kong's "Mad World" and Taiwan's "Small Talk", have won numerous international awards, while the Wu Jing-starrer has yet to win one.

The 90th Academy Awards will be held on 4 March 2018.
